I like the size but of course that means that the screen is small. Be sure your eyesight is or corrects to 20-20. It's very versatile - can be used for topo, boat and city navigation, with the right cards. One thing I don't like is that when you scroll the screen with your finger, a stickpin pops up. That's to enable you to set up a waypoint at that spot but the screen is so small that the stickpin takes up too much space. It's annoying but not a dealbreaker. Wish you could turn that feature off.

I have been using a DeLorme for many years and have been very happy with it. The reason I looked at a new GPS, and specifically a Garmin, was some after-market mapping software that showed private property boundaries which would be useful for hunting. I then picked the Dakota for its size and weight, screen size, and wanted to play with a touch-screen. I’ve had the unit for a couple weeks and admittedly am still learning to use it. The basic use options are pretty straight forward and I do like the touch screen for panning around. The Dakota immediately downloaded a software update – no big deal – but now every time I turn it on it takes an additional few seconds with a screen message about verifying the update which is a bit annoying.I am finding working with additional maps somewhat frustrating (and expensive). Garmin appears to have everything locked down with security to the point that sharing any data can be difficult. I bought the Topo 25 on CD. The images appear different than USGS maps so I’m not as comfortable using them. The 3-D viewing on my desk top leaves some things to be desired compared to my old DeLorme. Now I’m learning there’s something else called “Birdseye” which may is taking me additional time to figure out but may be my best option for topo maps. If that turns out to be the case I threw $100 bucks away on Topo25. I guess all and all the jury is still out. If the aftermarket private land map was available for DeLorme I wouldn’t have gone here.

I upgraded from a Dakota 10 for the sd card slot. This unit seems to get the satellite lock much faster and seems to be more sensitive. Does all I need it to.

I do not read directions unless I have to. This product worked well for me. It shows you how to use it with videos. I loved it from the first day. I am making a life change and walking. I use it to set goal and to keep track of progress. My wife and I are up to 6-8 miles per day 5 days per week. I am feeling better and she is also. plus we spend time together. All of our walking is in the timber. We use Base camp to store our walks and place photos on our maps. I would recommend to anyone.
