WORKS WELL, AS DESCRIBED
Pros: compact, light weight, improved battery life Cons: poor documentation. poor receiver & transmitter
Took a little time to set up and link with my iPhone the first time. Had to get customer support involved. Better documentation could have saved my call to customer support. Customer support was pretty quick and very helpful. User manual is very brief. Better documentation is badly needed. This device needs a much clearer view of the sky than my hiking GPS.

EXCELLENT PRODUCT
Pros: small and compact. Cons: learning curve
This is a life saver, literally!
It took a little bit to get past the learning curve, but after that it is an excellent product. I can send a message telling others on my list that I am at the trail head and ready to ride.
I sent them all a link to watch me as I travel the trails so they can see my progress. During the day I send messages to let them know what's up. I love this product.
If you have a smart phone, this is the unit for you.

SPOT CONNECT
Pros: small, lightweight. custom message feature. Cons: better documentation
I’ve been planning to buy a Spot product for several years now as there are many places that I frequent for hiking in my area that are outside cellular coverage. When the Spot Connect came on the market, I jumped all over it. Having the ability to send custom messages was very enticing to me. The only early frustration I had was there is currently no Blackberry app (it’s scheduled to be released later this year), so I had to buy a cheap used IPod to use the device. So far it was worked exactly as advertised. The fact you have to sync the Bluetooth every time you use the device is a bit of an annoyance, but not a major issue. The documentation could be a bit better, as it took me several weeks (and several calls to customer service) to figure out how to use the Social Networking features. So far I haven’t been able to use the text messaging functions, but this is a technical issue between Spot and my carrier and is not associated with the device. I would highly recommend this device to anyone who goes off the beaten path. I almost had to use the help function last week-turned out I didn’t need to, but I was glad to have that piece of mind.

GREAT TRACKING DEVICE, SOFTWARE MARGINAL
Pros: size, price, connects well to satellites Cons: currently no mounting hardware, software
The tracking features of this GPS unit work just great. It shows updates in real time on your own personal webpage or on the SpotConnect website. The software is a bit flaky though. The bluetooth connection needs to be set every time you use the device - it doesn't autorecognize like most bluetooth devices. Also the software doesn't always keep the connection between the iPhone and itself which is annoying. Given that this is the first software update for the device I'm assuming it will get better over time. It works but it needs some software and user-interface refinement.

IMPROVED
In fairness , I would upgrade my review after the current update of software .Still unable to use the app offline( when not paired with device) but is less buggy and works now . I would recommend to the resposible user although the software could be improved .Nothing wrong with the hardware

SPOT CONNECT NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME
Purchased and tested .The hardware is robust and works in a timely fashion. The problem is the iPhone app for connect is buggy and poorly designed .(Spot issued an update within first few days .)Cannot work within app offline and adding contacts is awkward .App freezes .Beacon can send SOS on it's own but lacks the OK and Help buttons of older models and is therefore dependent on app software .Nice concept hampered by poor software .

NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION TO MAKE A BUYING DECISION
Here's some things i'd like to know 1)does it communicate only via bluetooth? 2) does the device see itself as master or slave? 2a) is this configurable? 3) can the bluetooth comm work with devices other than cellphones? 4) what bluetooth transmission class? 1,2 or 3? 5) probability of successful uploads at different latitudes? 6) Is standard messaging via a website? why isnt there a solid delivery date?
[Ed. note: Good questions, but we're more apt to answer them in a timely manner either by email or on our Q & A forums. Thank you!]
