Hi Jandc,
You can definitely change the units to metric on the Garmin GPSMAP 62S.
To do so please follow these steps:
- Press the "Menu" button twice.
- Select "Setup".
- Arrow down until the line with "Units" is selected, press "Enter".
- Select one of the lines, and choose between the options listed.

You can change to metric units (as described above), but for some reason, it leaves the proximity points' units in miles. I have reported this to Garmin.
