NO UPDATES, THEN DISCONTINUED...

My Magellan GPS has aged built-in basemaps but I purchased the Direct Route to use GPS for what it was meant for, to get me to places accurately.

After I purchased the software, I noticed MY STREET was not even on the Direct Route. I emailed Magellan and they told me they would not be updating the Direct Route, nor would a compatible GIS data set be forthcoming.

Great! So I'm locked into street maps from 2006.

I will never purchase a Magellan Product again!

Pros: none
Cons: magellan never updated dataset, then discontinued.

GPS 310 ON THE WATER

Great little unit for on the water. It only shows what direction you are going, but because of this , a used unit is fairly cheap!! Once you have marked and labeled a waypoint, and want to head back to it, it tells you were to turn to keep you on a stait coarse to your point. It allows you to set the ammount of waiver off track you want to allow yourself.

By outting multiple marks or waypoints to gether you can make a route which it will follow forwqad ans reverse .....NOT TO MANY features, but a great little unit to have for a fishing boat- by marking where the scool was when you passed over it,you can hit it time and time again. With only 100 marks storage, and one route storage this unit is limited to small fishing trips, and with no bread crum trail, you must have a compass with youin the boat. It will tell you at present speed, how long to get there, and how fast you are going, but without showing the route as a trail, even though it tells you how to stay on track,I find its use limited to my boat only. It isn't very good out in the bush while hunting, without the bread crumb trail.

Pros: good for short routes while on the water
Cons: not worth a dahm in the bush without bread trail

GREAT NAVIGATOR FOR THE MONEY!

I've used the 3250 for a couple of years. It's worked very well. It's a basic device but does have Bluetooth and some voice recognition capability. I'm in the process of getting the 2010 map upgrade so I'll be able to use it for a couple more years. BTW - you can take it with you when you leave the car. It's battery will work for 2 or 3 hours.

Pros: dependable, economical
Cons: sometimes has to be reset to begin a new route.

MAGELLAN MERIDIAN

I was very disappointed to hear that they are no longer manufacturing this model. I have had one for many years and it has been incredibily useful on the water. I do not know that I would recommmend it for anything other than hiking, boating, or something along that line.

Pros: great for boating use.
Cons: not useful for highway traveling.

WORK WHEN USING MAPSEND LITE TO VIEW TOPO CANADA

Just install mapsend topo canada under Vista. It won't load but dont care to much. Install Mapsend lite v2 free. The v2 version can load any other mapsend map already installed. You get a single interface for all your mapsend maps whenever topo, topo 3D or other kind. On topo map, mapsend lite offer 3D view and profile. Not much is missing from the original mapsend topo Canada software.

Pros: outdated data but mountains 3d view are there.
Cons: wont open in vista but can from mapsend lite v2

MAPSEND AND TOPO CANADA UNDER VISTA

Try the Program Compatibility Wizard in Vista. First, completely uninstall all Mapsend products. Reboot. Then go to http://www.magellangps.com/support/faqdetail.asp? faqid=470&prodid=1223 and following the instructions. Don't worry about the way you screen looks during the process. It should work - it did on my Toshiba laptop and eXplorist 500. If not just reverse the steps and kick yourself for not reading teh box.

Actually purchased 12/07. Sent back for multiple problems once. It took one month to get it back. Condition actually worse. Has been gone back for repair over one month now. Gone two months out of eleven owned. I have an unit which works great.

Speed up repair process. No excuse for this long a delay especially when sent back a second time. Have you heard of priority

Some things are great - others not so much. I have a Sportrak Pro, and run Mapsend Topo on a XP with SP3. No problem getting everything I want out of the system. Having to load the CD is a pain in the butt, as it runs slow, but it does get the job done. However, when I tried to load the program into my Vista laptop - no luck. The install won't load some drivers. I see from the other posts I am not alone here. I use Magellan's Canada S&D program for streets and built-up areas. That program loaded into Vista OK. I do a lot of sea-kayak guiding and the Sportrak takes a bit of a beating and dunking. My problem with customer support was dealing with some water leakage in what is suppose to be a waterproof unit (it's not). I contacted Magellan by email, and it took about two weeks for them to get back to me. The best Magellan could do was to offer a discount on a newer unit. So - seeing as the warranty was gone anyway, I opened the GPS, found the damage, fixed it, sealed and closed the unit, and off I go. It's been working fine for months now. I guess my biggest complaint is how quickly Magellan drops suppport on their less-than-brand-new units.

MAGELLAN MAPSEND USA TOPO

I rated it a 4 because when it works, it works pretty well. Unfortunately, like the rest of you, I bought a new Dell with XP-pro loaded. The only way I can get MapSend to install and run is with a clean boot. And, once it's installed, you can get it to run (most of the time), by putting it in your 'Start Up'... that way it 'runs' at start-up (duh)before all the USB ports?? fire up and kill it. But then just try to turn it off and back on sorry: "This program is already running" ....try the three-fingered salute "Ctl-Alt- Delete"..and kill it yourself.. just my 2¢, Like I said, I use it All the Time great bunch of maps...

ROTTEN SOFTWARE !

I bought the MapSend Topo Canada for my SportTrak Color Hand held GPS.I was running X.P and later had to buy a new computer which came pre-loaded with Vista. I tried to load my MapSend software on my new computer and the software won,t work. I called Magellan ,and was told I had to buy X.P that Vista will not work. Why should I have to spend another $200.00 to buy X.P when they should be the ones to provide some sort of patch ! Very Very Poor Service! Service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm having the same problem with Mapsend Topo Canada. I'm running XP witht he latest updates and can't get the MapSend program to even start. Tech support was NO help. You can't tell me they don't know about the XP/Mapsend incompatibility problem. Even if there is nothing they can do until they release the next patch, I shouldn't have to go searching the net to find out what the problem is. Bottom line: I'm pissed off and completely dissatisfied, and will never buy a Magellan again.

Peace, out.

MAPSEND/MAGELLAN SERVICE IS CRAP!

I've owned Magellan GPS' for three years. Nothing wrong with the GPS. However, MapSend Topo Canada ($120.00) is the flakiest piece of crap software I've ever come across. At best it was a major pain in the ass to use. Now, with XP's latest updates installed, it will not even run! This program is absolute junk. Magellan/Mapsend should be ashamed of themselves. The only thing worse than their product is their service. They outright suck. I've never been so disappointed as I am with this product. They can kiss my ass goodbye. I'll never buy another Magellan/Mapsend product and you can rest assured that I will spread the word. Maybe I'll do them a favour and send them a link to this thread.

TRITON 2000 A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT.

Just recieved the unit 2 days ago and have spent 7 hours. Not kidding. 7 hours on the phone with their tech support. Went from a level 1 tech to a level 2. Still no help. I can't beleive they don't train their front line staff. They send these people to the front lines with out any ammo.

Down loaded the Western Canada Topo Map 5 times. Will not load on the unit. Oh ya, I should mention that the serial number on the units housing doesn't match the firmware. Nice. I deviated from my Garmin's because I wanted the topo feature. What a huge disappointment. I just hope I don't get any hassles when I return this pile of &%*t.

Magellan eXplorist XL is a good piece of hardware. But, it's poor in map and software update. This company is out to suck money out of the user of their machines. They don't tell you the maps (topo or street) are not up-to-day and no update is forth coming. They hope you are naive to buy their new model again. I can tell you I won't! I will find a brand that will provide updates for their gps machine (old or new).

I got a explorist 500 le for christmas and then downloaded canada topo 3d from the cd that comes with it after having to pay 130$ just to unlock the software ( just another way to suck some more of your money out of you) only to find out that my new vista computer isn't compatible with explorist, so i called tech support 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 times and never got an answer so i thought i might be calling at the wrong time so i double then tripled checked the time zones. it was 2:00 pm there time every time i call i have to go through the hole hitting number after number making selections only to have a recorded voice tell me that there are no agents availible call back later. So I call and call nothing . plan b i write them an e-mail on there web site, nothing ,I write a second finally an answer they give me a list of instructions to follow, so i do, but it still doesn't work, so i write them a reply, no response, so i write a thrid message and I get a response, they tell me now that there is currently no drivers for vista and they don't have an eta on when they will. so I have a gps thats no good to me ,the base map sucks! anyway i hate magellan and if i where you i'd go with Garmin P.s if they knew that explorist wasn't going to work with vista why wouldnt they just tell me that in the first place, instend of going through hours of following detailed instructions that aren't going to work

SOFTWARE ISSUES

The technical support is NOT helpful - almost useless. I cannot believe the kind of answers (if any) that I get from these people. Magellan should definitely address this. Because they will lose customers over the long run to Garmin, etc.. I will be one of those people - they will not get a dime more from me.. The MapSend Topo Canada-Ontario loaded ok, but all the roads are shifted 80 metres to the north. I have called 4 times, and cannot get an answer as to how to correct this..frustrating. Furthermore, I asked what the issue was regarding my Explorist 500LE with regards to the batteries getting drained quickly (less than 1 hour on 1 set of 3AA's which is ridiculous). You know what they told me? All they could tell me is to use 3AA's!! I think that's pretty obvious. Unbelievable... Finally, after being on hold for a while, they came back and told me to use lithium. I finally figured out that it WAS the kind of batteries I was using. Standard NI M Hydride rechargeables are supposed to be for high drain devices, but they DEFINITELY don't work for this GPS.. they drain very rapidly. Standard Duracells seem to last pretty good: +/-6 hours A lot better than 1 hour. The MapSend maps themselves are pretty detailed. As for the unit, the scrolling/Enter button is the same control on the GPS. This is very awkward because it's hard not to press the Enter while scrolling the map. I would much rather have a pad. Overall, I would not recommend this product or this company.

TOPO WO'NT RUN WITH WINDOWS VISTA

I followed all of Magellan's instruction and their so called Tech Support's directions but Can't get 3D Topo to run properly with Vista . I got the map and streets OK but no 3D or elevation contours . . Works OK with my XP system but not Vista . . You'd kind of expect a respectable company to make sure their product works and to keep it updated . . It seems they want to create obsolescence .not happy customers . .

I wish I could find a replacement antenna. The thing kept falling of the unit and now I can't use it because it's lost. Was on hold for 30 minutes waiting for a sales person and they couldn't help me. Only offered to trade in for a newer unit. Not the greatest unit. The hand held unit works as advertized and has a lot of bells and whistles. Documentation is poor to non-exitent. Software is pathetic. I found tech support to be good. They added a AAA battery adapter to the stuff that comes in the box, there is no mention of this in the documentation, only a sticker on the outside of the box saying it is included. This is a valuable addition for people who are not next to an electrical outlet for extended periods of time but construction of the adapter is chintzy at best. The unit cannot use maps made by earlier MapSend Programs such as MapSend S&D Canada or MapSend S&D USA. It can use maps from MapSend Direct Route but they have to be converted using included software, Magellan Conversion Manager. The conversion manager cannot convert waypoints (it says it can but it can't). The included software MapSend Lite (which is free from the web site) can be used to convert waypoints in a complicated process. The included CD has some MapSend Titles - Direct Route North America, Topo USA and Topo Canada, that can be unlocked for a price significantly exceeding what they sell for retail. The included geocaching software is useless. Connecting the unit to a computer is an issue. There are two ways to connect the USB cable and I got it wrong the first time. There are no pictures or written instructions on how to do this. I did manage to get through to their tech support and the lady who helped me immediately solved this problem for me. I lost contact with her before I could tell her that the problem was solved, but later she called back to check to see if it worked. Their tech support on this issue for me was very good. The included electronic compass works but it is only about as good as what you see in some cars. The thermometer seems to be reasonably accurate. I suspect that the barometer works as well but I am not sure how I will use it. The ability to read SD cards is great. I use a 1 GB card with no problems. The unit is set for 4800 baud transfer rate so uploading large maps will be glacially slow. I upload to the card using a card rerader and do not go through the GPS unit. I have a Magellan Sport Track Pro and was looking to upgrade when I got this unit. I do not think that I have upgraded and I am very disappointed in this product.

MAGELLAN EXPLORIST 300 LEAVE YOU IN LIMBO.

Thank, but no thanks on this unit, and seriously looking at alternate brands. This unit is very good, but It has been wiped out one to many time. Geocaching in the forest, You have marked your car, so you can return, you are out there some 500 Yards from the car, in a forest at night. eXplorist decides to burn in, Wipe itself out. Did I do the wrong key combination, I don't know. All I know now is the complete system has re-booted and I have no way points, NOT EVEN MY CAR. Only saving grace on this, is Electronic compass. Without that I was truly lost. Go out but had to call it a noght. this is the fifth time this happens. I am sick and tired. time for a better product.

The maps are outdated by many years! The software was not written to interface with my GPS properly (Explorist 600) although it mentions that model on the box (Should have known when it was really only a add on sticker mentioning my model). The software is a real pain if you have a explorist model and half of the functions in the software don't work with the explorist model. As mentioned above the package appears to be not very XP compatible, specifically if you have any other software on your computer that utilises USB ports. The Mapsend product will not work at all unless you run msconfig and utilise selective startup and disable all software that utilises any usb ports.

Bottom line is that this package is useless if you have the Magellan Explorist series. Hopefully the Topo 3D Canada is a better product but I would not count on it!!!!

This is my first GPS unit. I love it. It has a great battery life, is easy to use and input information. The actual mapping software purchased separately takes time to learn. But once the map is in the unit, you can easily find your way around. As for the base map...you will need to buy a topo map or a streets map. You really cant to much without either one of those. They are very detailed however and should meet your needs. I love this device and dont leave home without it.

Review: I've only had my Magellan Roadmate 700 for about 3 weeks. I had a problem at first getting it to locate where I was. I had to actually go in and put my address in and then after that it was fine. I had read a review about that before I bought it and someone else had that same problem. There's a few things I don't understand about it because in general it is so easy to use that you don't have to have step by step instructions....even I could figure it out! One thing it is doing now is that it is not recalculating the route if I make a wrong or just make a turn that it isn't showing. At first it would recalculate immediately if I did something it wasn't telling me to do. Now it doesn't recalculate at all and that was one of the main reasons I chose the 700 model. If anyone else has had this problem, please feel free to e-mail me at LARCRED@AOL.COM. Other than that I think it is a great product.

Magellan's MapSend Topo 3D V.1.0 is worthless. It has very few trails, no exit numbers for InterStates, does not indicate when you cross a State line. East-West streets can be off as much as 500 feet. Magellan does not allow you to make backup copies, and you have to insert the 3rd CD everytime you want to run the map program. If you damage your CD, they will not replace it, you have to buy the entire set at full price. Three times I spent 45 minutes waiting on the phone for tech support to answer. Magellan's GPS units are fantastic, but their MapSend program is beyond worthless. Do yourself a favor and shop the competition.

Honestly speaking,it is a reprint from fairly old records. We could not find streets, that have existed at least 25 years. But as far, as topografic features, the product is excellent. We would score it 7,on a scale of 10. DO NOT expect total accuracy in street finding !

This unit is a gimmic... There are no Canadian maps built into the unit, all it has are major hwys. This unit is useless to me when I'm in Canada. The strange thing is that this unit is an American maping GPS unit that is sold @ retailers in Canada. It does not make any sense... Don't buy it, if you're thinking of going north.

it rocks. I was looking at all the different models of explorists and wanted the best battery life and there-fore least options. The 100 has all the good stuff of the others but no crappy generic installed maps. I had alot of old locations I had to manually enter, but it makes the others look way over priced for the addition of features not that neccessary.

Great unit for the money. Uses AA batteries and they last about 10-12 hours depending on if you use backlight feature or not. I ride a motorcycle and use the direct route street software. So far it has been reliable but as with most street software it does not always send you the quickest way. The screen is small but not as small as Garmins comparable unit. The screen tends to throw a lot of glare and can be difficult to see in the daytime. If I cant find a hood to shade the screen Ill have to make one. This problem exists in all makes of handhelds. Expandable SD slot allows for maps up to 64mb. This covers quite a large area. I use a 128 mb card which does not switch over maps automatic. It only takes a moment to do it by hand. The buttons are a little small for riding gloves. In my opinion to get a better unit you would have to triple the dollars spent. Excellent unit for the money.

This unit has worked well for me. As a result of experience with a *previous* Magellan bike mount, I augmented the security of the eXplorist within the mount with velcro. Also, for added security, I run the wrist strap through the hole in the back of the mount, and secure the strap to my bike using a little safety hook. I wouldn't feel comfortable using this mount without those precautions riding on bumpy roads, or going over curbs. With the velcro and wrist strap secured though, I've never had any problem at all. It mounts to my handlebar extender very securely, though you'll want to tighten up the screws from time to time. Installing/uninstalling the eXplorist in the mount is very quick and easy - a matter of a second or two without the strap, and a few seconds if you secure the wrist strap as I would suggest.

Version 1.10 of MapSend acts like a first version of the software. I use the software extensively on my laptop while travelling around Southwest Asia. The software inexplicably requires the CD to be inserted when running it. This uses more precious battery power on a portable system. Even Microsoft Streets & Trips doesn't require the CD to be inserted to run the software! The company wrote me that they have no plans to change this requirement, which would lead me to either other software or another GPS altogether on my next purchase. I presume this is because they are afraid that their software will be pirated. And don't think about making a backup copy of the CD, it's protected with SafeDisc2. However, you can get ONE backup copy free of charge by sending your receipt to the company. If this backup and the replacement get messed up, you're out of luck until you pay again! The addition of routes and tracks to a map creates a horrendous yellow line that is not editable, other than the points that are added or deleted. If you delete the wrong point, you can't undo it. Forget about creating a map to upload to your Magellan GPS. You can upload routes and waypoints, but not an edited map because you can't edit the map. Uploading regions, routes and waypoints to the device (in my case a SporTrak Pro) is fairly painless, although the design of the connection to the GPS could be better. Having to use a serial adapter is archaic at best, and many laptops don't come with a serial connection. USB has been out for a while now! Travelling while running the MapSend software shows relevant information in a small area of the window that you can't glance at while driving, you have to pretty much stop to see the data. The cursor moving across the screen is ok. All in all, this software has a long way to go to be a totally useable software package, especially if you want to use it real time on a laptop.

The Explorist is the perfect GPS for anyone that wants a simpler to use and learn, no frills gps. You can pick it up for the first time and know how to use it correctly in 5 minutes. Its WAAS enabled, making it acurate to 7 feet, something other GPS recievers of this price DON'T have. I use it for everything, From finding the way to my usual spot on the beach, or when out on my PWC in the gulf. The compass screen is very useful when out on the water, you will always find the boat ramp. I have even used it to mark my car in the mall parking lot so i don't have to seach for it when i leave.

I bought the Roadmate 760 while on vacation in North Carolina. It worked wonderfully routing me from address to address within Charlotte and smaller towns throughout NC. I received a full WAAS signal at lease 90% of the time even in the downtown areas and hills of Western NC.

I have also used this unit in Germany without much problem. The maps aren’t always as accurate as I’d like, but I’ve seen the same thing with other mapping systems including the factory installed BMW GPS system. The signal is a little weaker in the hilly, tree covered area I live in, but works great on the Autobahn.

I agree with previous posts. Not only is the mapping in Canada truly horrible, it's very inaccurate, ie. roads splitting off when there is only one road, etc. Also, my explorist 200 "joystick" broke internally after using it only twice! DO NOT BUY.
