Very pleased with the results obtained so far .Picture clarity is surprisingly good, purchased the 5x because have chartplotter installed and lack space for anything larger,only regret cannot download to an SD. Will see most use as a tool to assist in finding dive sites.

SNOWMOBILE GPS

This seems to be a great unit for boating, forced to buy the marine GPS because I couldn't find a unit with this screen size made for snowmobiling and ATV use. I have the hand held units ie Lowrance Hunt, I-Finder, but the screens are too small to read while travelling. The sonar and Radar will be a waste for my use. I only had this GPS for a short time but I am sure it will serve me will as I become more familiar with the unit.

SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED WITH THE UNIT

Product arrived on time and worked perfectly. Was a little pricey for what it is. I am very disappointed with Lowrance, you would think after you pay $600 for a GPS you would not have to buy a protective cover, an inline fuse holder, and these little screws and template for flush mounting separatly. IT SHOULD JUST COME WITH IT. What a rip off!

LOWRANCE OR HUMMINGBIRD?

I chose the HDS8 Gen2 because I was familar with the older 522gps sonar. It was a fast learn process to convert from one to the other. I have owned it for about 3 weeks and like it but, there is one major problem with it. The system for some unknown reason like to reboot itself when the keep pad is depressed. This happens about once an hour while powered. Lowrance tech support says to send it in for evaluation. I like the system but do not want to be without it for the opening of fishing. So hopefully the will come up with a software update to fix the problem.

Pros: structure scan, hd display ease of use.
Cons: likes to reboot itself for now reason.

DOES WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO.

I'm pretty happy with this unit. It is intuitive and simple to use, but I should qualify this: I have used other Lowrance units before.

Yes the micro SD card is inside the SD card - Lowrance didn't invent that concept.

Transducer came with plenty of cable to reach the transom on my 17.5' boat.

Easily removed.

Doesn't come with the Lowrance cable to connect to your radio, but I see that GPS city stocks these. Would have been nice to know so it could have been shipped as a single order. I guess I'm going to have to get around to that.

It appears that every time you power up the unit you have to select the more detailed Gold chart on the micro SD, since the generic one loads by default. Is there a way around this?

Pros: intuitive sounder works great remmoveable.
Cons: radio cable not incl./pwr on default charts not sd

NMEA 0183 CABLE FOR LOWRANCE ELITE 5M

No instuctions, memo, etc. in packaging or GPS manual. Had to get help from GPS City and Lowrance Customer Support. The only active pin-outs from the Elite 5m unit are yellow (+) and ground. Had to cut off the cable end containing a resistor and diode in the heat shrink end and re-strip. The unit is only capable as a "talker" and can drive one single- ended "listener" such as an autopiliot. Got it to work, however.

CAN NOT SEE ANY FISH

The only reason that i purchased the second transducer was to get the power cable part of the assembly.I tried in vain to buy a power cable for the elite 5 dsi.I went to the Q & A and asked if I could get an extension cable as my boat is 23 ft and was told that there is one available but gps city does not have them in stock.this is of no use to me.generally speaking,I find support for lowrance products to be greatly lacking........George

INSTRUCTION MANUAL.

The instruction manual is pretty useless. Doesn't go into any detail about all the options, and there are many. I just spent about 4 hours sitting in my driveway going over every last option this thing has and tweaking it to my liking. It's not that it's hard to operate but if you have a specific question about something you are SOL. Overall it seems to be a pretty decent unit. I fish exclusively in shore waters of the Big Bend area of Florida so the sonar options aren't as important as the chartplotter. Overall it does what it's supposed to do but you have to learn how to do it because the instruction manual isn't much help.

NO BOAT SPEED INDICATOR

For a GPS unit that does not have on screen boat speed is a bit of a disapointment. It should also come with more cables for connection to other unit.

[Ed. note: You can configure the data fields on the map screen to show your boat speed and other GPS data. From the map screen hit the Menu button once. Then Select Overlay Data and then configure. In this screen you can change the data you see on the screen. to bring up the menu for changing data hit Menu once to bring up a sub menu. ]

GOOD PRODUCT

I decided to try the scupper mount prior to having to drill any holes in my kayak. I considered mounting the transducer inside the hull but I wanted the most accurate sonar and temperature readings possible. I had to make some modifications to some of the provide hardware due the the location of the scupper hole being used but that was my choice. otherwise the hardware fit perfectly. The plastic mount seems a little weak but I haven't had it break yet. My kayak doesn't have a recessed hole for the mount so it protrudes slightly which I take into consideration when in really skinny water. Overall I think it's a great option for those who don't want to drill holes or glue the transducer inside the hull

LOWARNACE ELITE 5 COVER

Should have came with the unit when I purchased the GPS Head from another site. That being said, apparently it does not come with one no matter where you buy the unit. Lowrance continue to miss the mark on customer satisfaction. Their service and support continue to get worse. Just ask anybody, or retailers that are honest. Really disappointed that I bought Lowrance in the first place. Too many missing options, and they cheap out on the accessories,hence having to buy a cover to protect a LCD Screen after the fact.

MAPPING DETAIL

I bought this to use in the 10,000 Islands area of SW Florida. I found that any feature, water or land, smaller than about 200 - 300 feet in width is not there. Last week I navigated bodies of water between islands that appeared on the screen as solid land and encountered islands that appeared on ths screen as water. The last GPS I had, a Lowrance 332-C with a 16XG Gold Navionics chip, had far better detail. I think they are trying to cram too much information on too small a chip. This unit also takes a rather long time to find its location. The first time I turned it on, it took 15 minutes to find itself at my home in Tampa, FL

NOOB NEEDS MORE DOCUMENTATION

My first time using a Fishfinder and I am struggling. Documentation points out all the great features but near to none on HOW TO use them. I don't know how to look for fish, front of the boat, does the screen show real time or is it refreshing left to right. What is a fish going to look like and where in relationship is it to the boat. Simple things if you know how the unit works, very difficult if you don't.

LAWRANCE ELITE DF COVER

This cover is well designed and adequately protects the depth finder from damage. It fits snugly and there is no concern about it slipping off. It protects the display screen from damage, but wouldn't protect it from a direct blow from a heavy or a sharp object. It is an excellent product if used within it's design limits.

MAP CREATE 6 CANADA

Very frustrating to use with newer Microsoft operating systems. Mine wouldn't load with Windows 7 or Windows Vista. Recommended work-arounds didn't help. I ended up putting it onto an old laptop with XP to get it functional. It was recommended for marine use but all it shows is shoreline. It makes OK topo's but there are better otions like Ozi Explorer for similar $.

ELITE 5 DSI

My unit did not come with instruction manual. Showed constant interference from downriggers in trolling situations. Great GPS unit once I figured out the menu controls and otherwise lost in thick inland fog in BC Ocean. Depth contour in Sonar mode good with many color choices for the display. Unit flashes when over 300 ft deep. Unit constantly flashed inacurrate depth while travelling over 10 MPH. A fairly decent entry level GPS /Fishfinder Combo with included Navionics Gold for BC Westcoast charting with accurate Depth Contours .

Pros: great bottom detail in the ocean.
Cons: good to 300ft.cord 3-4 ft short for 22ft boat.

MICROCHIP LOCATION

This review is w.r.t. the microSD chip. Was out on the water to test everything and found the included SD card doesn't fit into the slot. Cursed several times, wasted a trip on the water, and was just waiting to call and cause havoc! Came here 1st and read Honky's comment about the microSD chip being within the SD card and it needs to be pulled out. How the heck am I supposed to know that??? It is written no where on any of the packaging or instructions. I've used MANY SD cards, never a microSD chip.

TOUGH TO FIGURE OUT!

Screen is really clear and the buttons easy to use, however I find it very difficult to actually do what I want it too. I don't have past experience with this type of product and the instruction manual is not at all user friendly (Lowrance's reputation of poor manuals holds true it turns out). Seems alot of steps are omitted and assumes you know how to navigate around.

I can't get the unit to save the chart type I'm using (Canada ocean), it always sets me to land, and I am having difficulties using some of the pretty basic features (ie. building routes). As a general rule I'm pretty electronics literate but I'm pretty frustrated with this product.

Pros: picture clarity, price was right after rebate

GREAT VIEWS, BUT NO ALARMS

This shows outstanding imaging. The only problem is that there is no fish id or alarm. So if you are used to a regular fish finder, this unit is not for you. The description of this unit is very misleading. You basically have to be looking at the screen all the time to see if there are any fish unlike the usual finders giving you an alarm.

ELITE-5 DSI SOUTH AFRICA

Simply no comparison between the down scan images and the regular fish finding images. tress are trees logs are logs, fish are fish, GPS maps are lacking mainly due to lack of support here in deepest darkest africa, takes an age to find satelites. when extremely shalow the unit does not perform well, pretty much only good for depth and temperature. Generally an excellent unit that i would buy again given the coice.

Thats who you would have see the pick up on a fish.The underwater view was ok.IF thats what your looking for. Brought mine back after 2 weeks of stareing at screen. Maybe a fish alarm would help. I did go out and trade up to the Elite 5X hoping for better results.

Building a sand rail, the race guys sold me on "THE" GPS to get for off-road. The Baja 5M. I took the race buggy for a spin in the Arizona desert and was immediately disappointed. A $600 speedometer! The car symbol was moving on a screen of solid tan, with very little detail on roads even in town I- 17 and 101. What is more disappointing is the hours I spent on the phone with Lowrance to try to get info on where to buy chart detail. I'm looking to get topo and/or satellite images. No luck so far. A real pain and too time consuming. I should have just rigged an ipad holder to the dash.

The support guy at Lowrance has not called back as he said he would. And I was surprised on how clueless he was. he kept trying to send me to Navioncs. I don't need contours of lakes when driving a desert race car. The support dude also suggested that I just drive the back roads in the desert and just drop a waypoint every few minutes to create a trail... Then I can find my way back. Brilliant!

I'm not interested in becoming the modern Lewis and Clark. If i want to leave my house in Phoenix and drive off-road to Crown King... i want to see dirt roads, hazards, river crossings, etc etc. Point A to B safe navigation. Getting stuck in the desert on a dead end canyon or running out of gas is not my idea of fun.

2011 C'mon man! get with the program Lowrance.

DISAPPOINTED IN THIS GPS/SONAR FOR THE PRICE

I installed this unit in June and disappointed in the product for the price. Set up is complicated, Chart depths/detail are too small to easily read, No fish finder capability. Online manual only which offers very little detail. Many low tech users cannot even find the supplied micro chip card. My screen has a purple haze in it. Does not compare to my Son's Garmin at much lower price. DSI is highly overrated. Boat symbol (location) on the chart is not very visible. Chip does contain many inland Ont lakes as well as Great Lakes & North Channel. Screen size is nice.
