KILLER DEAL-BREAKER PROBLEMS

Can't read it in direct sunlight, contrary to what the literature says. Only way is to throw a black towel over your head and the unit.

For no reason, it arbitrarily and randomly stops tracking the satellites, dead cold, no bars anywhere, so you have no idea where you are.

Slow to acquire satellites, and has a tough time holding on to them.

The satellite maps are very blurry and useless.

The MP3 function is a waste. The RF modulator does not work very well, and the capacity is much less than what everyone now has in their MP3 players, cell phones, iPods, etc. The speaker is tinny and cheap, with much static from the hard disk electronics.

POI names and icons, street names, and marine symbols are teeny-weeny, hard-to-impossible to make out even sitting in your living room doing the simulation thing, let alone when underway in a bouncing boat or car.

You can't position the cursor precisely. There are times when you need to do this, but you can't. Rocking your finger will not do the trick.

The road maps are completely separate from the marine coastal charts, which are separate from the inland lakes maps. so you have to manually switch to one or the other. When you have road info, you have no marine info, and vice versa. They need to merge all the maps.

Take a look at the “Navigation Mode” screen when it's in “Night Mode”. It's messed up.

The left edge of the “Nav Mode” screen is not responsive. It's extremely difficult to change the Navigation Mode, as the radio buttons don't respond.

It needs a faster processor and a faster hard disk, or go to solid state memory. The hard disk is very sensitive to vibration, and will mess up while you are underway.

The unit can't navigate a route in reverse - you have to manually reverse the waypoints.

Need to be able to download updated POI data. Also, user should be able to enter POI data manually (as a POI entry, not as a Contact), delete POIs that are no longer in business, and to be able to move existing POIs that are in the wrong place on the map. Similarly be able to update “customized” POIs to the PC.

There are mechanical buttons as well as the touchscreen. You can operate the touchscreen one-handed with the tip of a finger, but the manual buttons require a thumb and a finger to hold the unit while you squeeze hard. So you can't push a button while you're holding something in your hand. They need to get rid of the manual buttons entirely.

I recently purchased the 600C and am very happy with it. It's screen is excellent and the available options to change settings are very good. I have used a Garmin c340 for a couple of years and purchased a Panasonic and returned it because of problems with it. I researched all brands prior to my purchase and am very happy with it and would purchase again. Note- you can call Lowrance and actually speak to a live person.
