NO BOAT SPEED INDICATOR
Pros: good color and accurate Cons: not enough displaced info on screen
For a GPS unit that does not have on screen boat speed is a bit of a disapointment. It should also come with more cables for connection to other unit.
[Ed. note: You can configure the data fields on the map screen to show your boat speed and other GPS data. From the map screen hit the Menu button once. Then Select Overlay Data and then configure. In this screen you can change the data you see on the screen. to bring up the menu for changing data hit Menu once to bring up a sub menu. ]

WARNING
Cons: no aftermarket service by gpscity
Further to my first review, if you plan on ordering this GPS unit it only comes with the power cord. If you wish to connect it to your VHF radio for DSC emergency calling which transmits your lat-long position be sure and order the NDC-4 cable. It is the cable that connects to the nmea output to the vhf, I think it is priced in the $30-40 range. GPSCITY were not the least bit helpful in getting this cable as an accessory after you have purched the unit.

LOWRANCE ELITE-5M GOLD GPS
Fairly easy to operate, Takes some time to manually enter your old GPS waypoints. Internal antenna seems to work well.Compact unit, will fit most places on boat. With the right software, you can download waypoints from your computer to a micro-chip then to the Elite 5m.It took awhile to find out that the microchip was hidden inside a larger SD chip since there was no mention of this. The Navionics micro-chip that comes with the Gold unit has some good charts on it, although some features are faint and the lettering is small and you can't change the font.

EXCELLENT PLOTTER AND GREAT VALUE
Pros: quality unit, simple to use with one hand, accurat Cons: in daylight docks, fingers etc. are to faint
I wanted the plotter only as I already had two sounders, installation was simple and it worked perfectly, The Navionics charts are outstanding however the contour lines are a bit faint but they dont clutter the screen either so it is a bit of a trade off. We are in the southern gulf island of BC and have many narrow passes to navigate and lots or markers etc. the accuracy of the unit is exceptional, when you pass a bouy the bow of the boat and the marker on the chart are rite on, The soundings (I use feet) are quite acccurate but you must account for the tide variations. The unit comes with the micro chart which is in the larger adapter, and it took me awhile to discover this. When you realize that all the charts on on this tiny chip it is truly astonishing. I ordered Friday afternoon and it was in my hands in Victoria Noon Tuesday, great service. local suppliers only interested in selling the plotter/sounder combo which I did not need or want so I saved about $135.00
