For starters, I use a Zumo 550 on two Harleys, a 2002 Police Special and a 2005 Dyna Wide Glide, on my 1997 Dodge Ram 4x4 and on my 2002 VW Cabrio Convertible for long distance navigation and POI's; a 60csx on both Harleys as well as the quad for geocaching, terrain and routing in the Arizona desert; and a 72 on the quad as the screen is large and easy to read while on the go as well as I use it on the Rigid Hull Inflatable at the coast for navigation in the fog and finding crab and prawn pots later in the day.
In 2008 I rode the Police Special for 3 months up thru B.C., out to Hyder AK, up the Alaska Hiway to the Kenai, spent a month in Alaska, then went over the Top of the World Highway, AKA the Chicken Hiway, to Dawson City Yukon, spent a month in the Yukon and went over to Skagway and down to Atlin, then back down the Alaska Hiway and over thru Alberta, then across BC and over to Vancouver Island and eventually to Sointula where my Summer residence is located.
In October, I loaded up the Dodge and Harley Hauler and headed down to Yuma AZ for my winter fun. The Arizona desert is challenging and very rewarding, but many hazards to navigation exist, so a GPS, cel phone and gallons of water and fuel are the basic requirements for successful off roading. The topo maps in the Zumo and the 60csx are a necessity as the desert is not flat but very mountainous and challenging. Old ghost towns and gold mines encourage the adventurer to areas otherwise shunned.
The Zumo is my main GPS due to it's many functions, ease of use on the go either in the vehicle or on the bike. It's the best there is as far as I'm concerned. Garmin has honored the warranty for various glitches and failures, so my trust is still with Garmin. The 60csx is a great field unit and does more than what I need for geocaching, however, the topo maps are a necessity where I seem to find myself, but since buying it a couple of years ago, there are more appropriate units strictly for geocaching, however, I'm not about to let my 60csx go. The old 72 is a warranty replacement for the older 12XL units that I have had for years, which were better than the 12CX's that I still have and of course, I haven't let go of my 40 Garmin 45's that are loaded with marine waypoints from Seattle WA to Juneau AK. Old tech to be sure, but still valid in a pinch.
The RAM mounting systems are the BEST TO BE HAD for sure. Without them, I wouldn't have the reliability and versatility that I enjoy when using my Garmins.

It was a long and cold day in April of 2009. Spring came early in Newfoundland for the first time in 5 years, we actually had Spring! :). It was the first of April, the roads were dry, the sun was out and I was riding my motorcycle (will all my warm gear on) with my Zumo GPS and RAM mounting center of the handle bars. I had heard that ice pans had already started making their way along our shores (of Newfoundland).
One of the best place to view the pans and bergs is along the eastern side of the Avalon Peninsula. So, I plotted a route in my GPS, mounted it on my motorcycle, and I was off!!! I started at 7am, and traveled south, in land and broke out of the southern coast of the Avalon. Then I traveled the coast for 200km until I found ice. And I DID indeed find ice!!

We and my family use this GPS every time we go to the states since we live in Canada and we don't know how to get to some of our friends in the states.
I also use this GPS when I go to big cities in Canada. First I find the address on the net and after this incredible GPS marks it with an arrow and I just follow it. It's a great product and everyone should have a Garmin GPS. |
