LIKE THE BASE CAMP TOPO
Pros: basecamp has nice features. Cons: streets and path don't line up.
When I'm biking some of the streets and my path are as much as 500 feet off. I called in and was told the 100k wouldn't be as close as the 24k. I'm just glad the map came as a package deal with the gps and didn't spend any extra cash. I use it with the etrex venture hc.

EASY TO USE TOPO MAPPING
Pros: easy to use Cons: rarely use base camp
Garmin Topographic 100K USA DVD is very good. I use it extensively in planning trips. The contour lines are satisfyingly detailed. I can quickly switch back and forth between TOPO and North American Select with ease. I recommend the program.

QUANTITY OVER QUALITY
Pros: nice shading and detail, nice overview Cons: not routable, useless 3d
I'm a road cyclist and hiker/photographer and use topographical maps to plan routes. I'm interested in looking a the profile of a ride or hike to get an idea of the difficulty that I can expect. I own Topo Canada and it is excellent routable software.
I purchased Garmin Topographic 100K USA DVD with the aforementioned purposes in mind. I also thought that the promised 3D view Basecamp software would be an added bonus.
On the plus side. The maps are nicely shaded and appear to have lots of information such as campsites, trails, and physical features shown. You get all the topographic maps of the USA for what I would imagine is a fraction of the price of paper maps, but I don't know that for a fact.
This map did not measure up. First, the map is not "routable." That means that you cannot pick two points on the map and have the software draw a route between them that follows the routes or trails in between. This map just draws a straight line.
Why is this important to bikers/hikers? Say you are a mountain biker looking at a switchback road from your campsite up to a mountain peak. With routable software, you click on your campsite, you click on the mountain peak and the software traces the road to the top giving you important information like profile and distance. This map draws a straight line from your campsite to the top of the mountain. That's good information for crows. :)
The Basecamp software that comes with this map is well intentioned, but the 3D is not useful at this time. The Garmin techs say that it works, but it is incredibly slow. They are right. Running on my IBM Thinkpad T43 it takes about sixty seconds to redraw the screen each time you move the map.
I workaround for the routable problem for road cyclists can be accomplished if you own City Navigator North America NT. To "beat" this routable problem you lay out your route using NT and then switch the underlying map to Topo USA 100k. Your route will be overlayed and then you can ask for the profile. Kind of cool. This little discovery saved me from kicking myself for an additional week or two after wasting $100 on Topo 100K USA.
This software might be useful to a hiker who wants to have a basemap loaded on their GPS that will allow them to orient themselves as they hike. Sort of, "Where am I now?," approach. I will allow you to trace your route and foresee obstacles before you get to them. It also gives a nice overview of the topography of large areas. You can pull back and look at a whole state or the whole country.
If you want routable topographical maps then purchase the 24K USA Topographical map that conforms to the region that you will be exploring.
[Ed. note: Awesome review Ken! Thanks.]

GARMIN TOPOGRAPHIC 100K USA DVD WITH BASECAMP
Seems about average for a map product. The main deficiency I would point to is that unlike the corresponding map for Canada, it does not support on-road navigation.
My main complaint with the software is with Basecamp itself. It is not very well thought out, editing tracks is very tedious and some other things are not obvious. It is sometimes difficult to know how the minds of software people work.

GOOD IF YOU REALLY NEED TOPO
Cons: v-e-r-y s-l-o-w d-o-w-n-l-o-a-d !!!!!
This is a good topo if you really use it. If you are not a serious outdoor enthusist, and are into a very general use of a GPS device I would not spend the money. On the other hand if you are very serious I would. Download is very slow, you may want to consider a preloaded option.

LACK OF AUTOROUTING GREATLY REDUCES THE VALUE.
Pros: great detail Cons: no autorouting.
The maps and topo features are great. However, for some reason, the auto-routing functions don't work with this product. It works just fine with garmin's topo maps for Canada, but not for the US.

GOOD COVERAGE, COULD BE EASIER TO USE
Pros: good coverage of large area Cons: unfriendly zoom and find , limited install options
Coverage good. Most streets included and physical features. 100k scale seems OK for many purposes. Wont find addresses or give directions but otherwise as good as street maps? clunky on zooming and creating routes. Install did not give option of how much to install or where. Too much focus on finding businesses that just got in the way.
