NO NEED
Pros: none Cons: to many to list
becouse there is no ups or downs Fla. looks like a plane piece of paper with lineson It. Also, there are trees and forests this TOPO 24 K does not even show them looks like a 5th grade pencil dwg. What a wast of money!

GARMIN TOPO US 24K SOUTHEAST DVE
Pros: auto routing
Still experimenting with the software. Only time will tell. This software is for an area other than the one I live in, but should prove invaluable when I ride the Trans America Trail on my dual sport KTM.

GREAT DETAIL...BUT
Pros: great detail Cons: spotty trail/off road coverage coverage
These maps have great detail, but it would have been nice if they had a more thorough coverage of foot/bike/atv trails. Its noteworthy to mention that unless you have a GPS unit with a larger screen (eg. Montana), the level of detail may be too difficult to read on the smaller screen GPS units (e.g. 60csx)

SOME ERRORS, INFREQUENT UPDATES
I'm from Kentucky. The Red River Gorge is a popular place to hike and backpack in this state, a place I am very familiar with. I was disappointed to find several errors in the map. Part of the Rough trail is missing (just before it joins the Sheltowee Trace from the east, an important junction). It also shows an unpaved road crossing the Red (near the suspension footbridge), heading into the wilderness and ending in the middle of nowhere. That road does not exist (never has as far as I know -- there is no evidence of a road having been there).
There are several good maps of the Gorge. No other map shows that road, or has gaps in important trails.
I will be using the Garmin map in the Great Smokies this summer. Now I will want to bring a good paper map with me. I don't have complete confidence that the Garmin map will be accurate and reliable, not enough to depend solely on it in an area I have never visited before. Why pay all that money if you can't really trust it? Why carry a GPS if you must also carry a paper map?
There are many other parks and trails in the Southeast. Perhaps I've found the only errors on the entire map. Perhaps by some coincidence the area I'm most familiar with happens to be the only area with problems. If that's true, it's a great map. But I must admit I'm somewhat concerned. My excitement for the product has dimmed.

VERY GOOD TOPOS BUT NOT EXACTLY THE SAME AS USGS
Pros: detailed elevation data and routing Cons: lack of many ground features, buildings sm lakes
The topos are very good. A great upgrade from the preloaded OregonT 2008 maps. They area 24K maps but they do not have all the small buildings, small lakes and some other features you see on real USGS 24K map. You can auto route on roads and trails which is a BIG plus. I do a lot more with topos that just use them for elevation data so the lack of all the ground features is a big negative me but for many people this will not be a concern.

SOUTHEAST 24K TOPO - SO SO
Pros: tons of fine detail, if that's what you want/need Cons: pitiful lack of manmade poi's- like powerlines
Have a Garmin 60 with 100k us topo maps. Bought an Oregon 450 and put the 24k topo map on it. Dissappointed in the lack of manmade poi's. The 24k maps dont even show the powerlines where I ride! The 100k maps do. The extra contour details of the 24k are great, but probably far more detail than the average person needs. Wish the maps were more like US Geo maps with far more manmade poi's. In fact the 24k maps show so much fine detail that it looks too busy on such a small screen. But you can adjust it down to less detail but then you're approaching the same detail of the 100k maps. The shading of mtns and hills is nice, as is the 3D capability. But it can be WAY too much detail on such a small screen. Miss the extra poi's of, at least, the 100k maps.

24K SOUTHEAST DVD
Pros: detail, contrast, ease of use
A most welcome improvement to GPS mapping. The product installs easily and provides good visibility on the GPS.The PC installation is very helpful for planning. Loading map areas onto the GPS is time consuming if the area is large (several states). I would tend to use the maps for area outings only, without trying to load the entire map set onto the GPS. While some trails are routable it doesn't appear that the AT is. (Select a beginning and end point and the route follows the trail. On the AT it appears to only do straight segments between waypoints). On all trails one would probably want to make sure they have the most current trail routes/reroutes.
