FUN LITTLE MACHINE
Pros: sturdiness, range, flexibility, self-contained Cons: high cost, bulk, polling bug, mediocre docs
This device makes a fun alternative to a cell-phone, in that it is an entirely self-contained mapping/communication widget. It can take free worldwide maps generated from openstreetmap.org, including some decent topographic information, so one's not bound to Garmin subscriptions either. Even at the Canadian 2W limit, signals can travel in a small town several urban miles away. The screen is nice and the touch interface is fine.
One complaint is the apparent inability to remotely poll the location of sibling radios. This is an advertised function that could be used to find an incapacitated member of a group, but it has not worked on any of mine. I have a Garmin support case open for it, and it may be just a fixable software bug.
