WORKS GREAT
I bought this item to hard-wire my Garmin Nuvi 550 to my 2009 KLR 650. It is great because I know that the voltage into the GPS is exactly what is needed. I shortened it about a foot, soldered on a couple connectors on the ends and it works great. I am only using the + and - wires, but it comes with other leads for data. A side note on the Nuvi: the battery is supposed to last 8 hours. It might if it is on the lowest brightness setting and it is not being used to navigate.) I love the Nuvi, but you need this hard- wire harness for trips longer than 2 hours.
Pros: works as advertised Cons: no dust cap for miniusb Recommend: YES

NOT THE BEST CABLE FOR THE NUVI SERIES
I bought this cable and it works just fine with my Oregon but when I plug it into my Nuvi 850, it only powers the screen to half brightness no matter what I do to the brightness controls on the gps.
When I unplug the cable and go to battery power, the Nuvi screen illuminates to full intensity. I don't think the cable is broken, but it certainly does not work very well with the Nuvi series.
Pros: works nicely with oregon Cons: does not work nicely with nuvi Recommend: NO OPINION

USEFUL ON A MOTORCYCLE
The cable has a transformer built in so it takes the 12 volt output from my bike's battery and steps it down so the gps is not overpowered. The transformer is close to the usb end of the cable so I shortened the cable to about 1' long, then soldered on a molded power connector, and it works beautifully.
Pros: transformer is close to the usb end of the cable Cons: usb connector is fairly fragile Recommend: YES

VERY USEFUL CABLE
I bought this cable because it has the power reduction capability built in, without needing to be plugged into a lighter outlet.
I shortened the cable to about 2' long and soldered a molded power connector so I can plug the gps into my motorcycle through a direct connection to the bike's battery.
Works really well!
Pros: solid construction Cons: none Recommend: YES

SOMEONE DIDN'T THINK THINGS THROUGH...
I purchased the Garmin Power and Data Cable to use with an Oregon 300 GPS. My intention was to have a cable that I could use in the car to power the GPS, and also to have a data cable to supply coordinates from the GPS to my computerized telescope (Losmandy Gemini) mount and APRS capable VHF radio. However, while assembling and testing the cable it seems that the circuitry in the cable assembly requires power, and not from the GPS end, for the serial data connection to function! This means, to briefly get data from my GPS to telescope mount, I have to find external power for the cable to work! This is very dissapointing.
I understand that Garmin makes a USB (on the GPS) to DB9 serial cable, where the USB/RS232 conversion is powered from the GPS, at the cost of battery life. Considering this Power and Data can provide DC power to the GPS, why can’t the GPS directly drive the RS232 data lines?
I have finished my Garmin Power and Data Cable with a 12- volt lighter plug and DB9 serial cable. It’s too bad Garmin doesn’t sell a prefabricated cable in this configuration, like they did for older GPS units. At some point I’ll but the “Garmin Rino 5xx Series PC Interface Cable” for GPS to RS232 without needing external power: http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-rino-5xx-series-pc-interface- cable.html
Pros: power and data :-) Cons: no power, no data! Recommend: YES
