GREAT FOR WARM WEATHER
As a GPS, the Oregon 300 is very easy to use and has every feature that I need. I do a lot of snowshoeing, and so far, have been disappointed in the behaviour in cold weather (-15 C). Good quality alkaline batteries seem to last only an hour at best and I have had the screen lockup and display horizontal lines until the unit is warmed up. Will try lithium batteries and keep the GPS in my inside coat pocket to see if I can get better performance.

WAIT FOR THE NEXT VERSION
A nice receiver and would recommend it if not for the mediocre display that's almost impossible to read in daylight.. even with the backlight cranked up. There are reports that Garmin is addressing these display issues with the Oregon 450. I hope it's true but until then this one's going back.
Pros: touch screen, easy to use menus, solid feel

TRèS BON POUR LE GEOCACHING
Ce gps a un écran tactile très facile d'utilisation, la reaction au touché est immediate même avec des gants d'hiver. L'écran se salis plus vite et on voit toujours les trace de doigt. Je l'utilise pour le géocaching, et ce que j'appécie le plus c'est que toute l'information et les commentaires sur la cache sont disponibles directement sur le gps. Un fois les caches trouvés, on revoit l'info du gps a l'ordinateur en un clic et toutes les caches trouvé s'enregistre sur le site de goecaching.com . En ce qui concerne l'écran, il est de très bonne dimension. Oui, c'est vrai qu' en plein soleil sur la neige, il faut mettre l'intensité de l'affichage au maximun pour voir quelque chose, c'est un détail agaçant mais par journée plus nuageuse on voit très très bien. La précision pour localisé une cache est légèrement moins bonne que le csx60,pour avoir testé les 2 machines en même temps avec un ami qui naviguait avec son 60csx sur le terrain. Ça fait un mois que je le test et tout va très bien. Les petites choses bizare qu'il faisait au début était plutôt du au gars qui l'utilisait.

Cons: ecran en plein soleil sur neige

VERY SATISFIED!
I've had the Oregon 300 about a month now and still learning all of it's capabilities. My primary uses are for geocaching, hiking, and canoeing, but with the routing capabilities of some of the free maps I've downloaded, I'm even using it as my automotive GPS. With the 12 volt adapter plugged in, my battery life is substantially improved and screen visibility is great. As has been well documented by others, the screen visibility and battery life are the weak points of this unit, but for me this is well compensated for by the quality and features of this unit. GPSCity service was Excellent!

GREAT PIECE OF KIT
I have been using the item in a desert climate while always wearing gloves when handling it (job necessity). It is holding up the the abuse excellently. The use of gloves has no negative affect on using the touch screen. The wireless transfer is a great tool and I use it quite a bit. The menu's are a breeze to navigate. Imputing grid's and creating way points is no trouble at all with this unit. My only complaint is that the screen doesn't go quite bright enough on very sunny days.

AWESOME
I have owned a Garmin E-Trex Legend, Garmin Colorado 300 and now this Garmin Oregon 300. Some complain that the screen is hard to see but I have not had any problems with it and use it with a Ram mount on my quad

BOUGHT FOR GEOCACHING
Quality build GPS. Functions galore. I bought this for paperless geocaching, and it does its job.
Pros: Fast pick-up of satellites, Profiling switching from car->geocaching with customizable menus, Paperless caching, touch screen.
Cons: Should come with screen protector, $100 for additional maps? Really? Google Navigator Maps = FREE just so you know Garmin, Typing in comments is possible but annoying, lack of updated instructions but internet oregon wiki site helps.

RECOMMEND FOR SURE
this unit is a very easy unit to use. User interface is very intuitive and quick to pickup on. the profile selector is nice and easy to switch the unit around depending on what you are doing. 3-d streetview makes this almost like the units designed just for the vehicles (without spoken prompts).
My only problem so far with this unit is of course battery life, however it is no longer a problem for me. Initially i was using alkalines and mid range rechargables with only about 2-3hours of life on a set. I have now switched to 2600mah high end batteries and full digital charger and now i'm getting 10+hours with normal use...
awsome unit for recreational and geocaching, good unit for road nav.
Pros: easy interface, rugged
Cons: manufacturer needs to recommend high end batteries

GREAT UNIT
Easy to learn, screen size is great compared to my previous 76csx. Loaded with all the features you need. I miss my mesure tool from my old unit. This one just seem to mesure from where you are to a destination. My old unit could mesure anywhere from point a to point b. Also, tracks cannot be loaded with the software, just drop the gpx file one the drive. i like that but i agree this could be anoying for beginers. i would recommend this unit to my friend.

COLORADO 300 REVIEW
I replaced by Garmin 60CS witha Garmin Colorado 300. The touch screen is easier to use than the directional pad on the 60. I also really liked having the entire country of City Navigator loaded at one time as one of the great bonuses. The ability to customize the icon home screem I also liked having the ability to use more character for waypoint names. The reason this GPS didn't score a 5 was that the screen was very dim, and requires the use of the backlight to see during the day which kills the battery life. Worse, the screen is polarized so that I cannot see the image when I wear my polarized sun glasses. It's a nit, but I don't like how small the waypoint symbols are when they are displayed when you are changing the symbol.

VERY DISAPPOINTED...
My 60CSx had some power issues, so i bought this unit for a long motorcycle trip. I was amazed, the screen was absolutely HORRIBLE. I could not see the screen 90% of the time, even in bright day light... if the sun was on the screen, or a shadow was on the screen, it was impossible to see it... extremely disappointing and actually a little dangerous because i was stupid enough to try and continue to see the screen when it was impossible. The 60CSx was much better, i never once had this problem. Even when you turned the light on the screen, it was still difficult to read or see, unless you turned the light to high. which in turn will kill the batteries much faster. That's another weakness, batteries,,, this unit would kill a set of new batteries in 1 day of typical usage, with no screen light on,,, if i had to use the screen light, the batteries wouldn't even last a day... My 60CSx was never nearly this bad... aren't the products supposed to be better over time..? not worse...
This is my 9th garmin unit over the years,,, and definitely the worst of the 9, when considering the value of what you got... I'm a life long garmin user, and will stay that way... I just highly do NOT recommend any of the oregon series units.

THIS GPS IS AWESOME.
I bought this GPS second hand. I just got it last week and I have already foudn 12 GeoCaches. It is very easy to use and the ability to go paperless geocaching is great, saves paper and ink.
I would recommend this GPS to anyone.

GPS D'EXCELLENTE QUALITé
Ce GPS est très facile à utiliser, l'écran tactile répond très bien au touché par contre elle est un peux lente à réagir lorsqu'il y a beaucoup de détails surtout lorsque en mode relief ombré ce problème sera peut-être corrigé avec les futurs "firmware". Aussi, l'écran est plus difficile à lire au soleil que le GPSMAP 60Cx, mais est elle est tout de même lisible et il est beaucoup plus agréable à utiliser que le GPSMAP 60Cx, c'est une évolution positive. Je recommande grandement l'achat de ce GPS.

DUAL PURPOSE MOTORCYCLE
Use it on my motorcycle for on road and off. It's great when it works, but it does cut out, on long trips, and turns off. I will spend more time trying to figure out it's problem. Besides that, it's perfect for my needs.

GARMIN OREGON 300
I bought the unit for Geocaching, and particularly like the notion of "paperless" searching. It works perfectly on that aspect, compatible with GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife) software for loading literally hundreds of geocache sites at once, and updating periodically as needed. I bought the Canadian road map from Garmin, which I think is necessary, as the base map included with the unit is pretty sparse. My only strong criticsm of the unit, mentioned by almost all reviews I read, is the screen, which although very user friendly with its touch capability, is FAR to dim in daylight - even at its highest setting. I have to remove my sunglasses and shield it to read it, which is really annoying when you're walking on a trail! Still, it is by far superior to my previous Magellan unit which was not compatible with Vista, let alone paperless. I highly recommend the unit, and the very competitive pricing at GPS City!!

EXCELLENT HAND-HELD GPS
The Oregon 300 is very easy to use. It acquires the satellite signal quickly, and maintains it much better than my old Garmin 12. The touch screen makes moving from one function to another really easy. I would prefer a printed manual, but the CD is pretty straight forward. Nowhere in the manual could I find clear instructions about how to put in the coordinates for a remote site that I wanted as a waypoint. I found out how to do it, but it could have been explained much better.

im not the most technical person and trying to learn all the functions on this,my first GPS, is a little difficult for me but im getting there. if its not your first GPS you should have no problem all in all i think this is a very good unit.

OREGON 300 FOR AN OUTDOOR MANIAC.
I recently purchased an Oregon 300 after some extensive comparison for functionality I chose this one, I am really happy with it. It is my 1st GPS and it perfectly suits my needs, Boating was my 1st reason I bought a GPS but since I got it, I use it all the time in the car, hiking, biking and looking forward to use it hunting and geo caching too.
The quality of the GPS is excellent and the touch screen is incredibly good. Some people mention that the screen was not bright enough but it doesn't affect me at all.
I was not very familiar with GPS function but with the touch screen it is very easy to understand and to use.
Everyday I enjoy using it. Not complicated at all, even the kids are starting to become familiar with it and my 8 year old daughter can use it.
Overall it is a perfect 10 for me. A little note on GPS City, the quality of the contact I had with them is very very good. Received the GPS 24 hours after Payment confirmation and the price was much better that I could find anywhere else.
I would certainly recommend (Already did) GPS city to anyone.
Pros: hardware quality, software friendly user.

GREAT FOR GEOCACHING
Very good overall. Paperless geocaching is excellent. A few quirks with the software, but nothing major. Accuracy seems very good. Touch screen is very good and intuitive. Display is dim though, and sometimes difficult (but not impossible) to see outdoors.

This gps is very good. For the price, I would have liked to have a cover and a screen protector that came with the item. Regarding its function, no problem there. I had a delivery period of two weeks even if I make a request for delivery by ExpressPost.

AN ALL IN ONE GEOCACHING GPS
I have bought this GPS for Geocaching only 3 months ago. I have change mu Colorado because touch screen is much easier to used for me. Up to now, the performance of this GPS is.....GREAT !!! The only small default are : not a really bright screen in sunlight with the GPS light off, average battery life and the sensitive satellite acquisition. When in dense cover, with the Oregon I have often around 25 feets precision and on the 60CSX, 12 feets. On the other hands, the Oregon is a superb machine for the GPX files. Its gave me all the informations I need in the field without printing from Geocaching site. If I have had only one GPS for Geocaching, it would be this one.
Pros: the best gps for gpx files
Cons: screen brightness, battery life, average sensitive

GREAT LITTLE GPS!
Bought one for my europe trip and it work great with no problems getting me around my planned trips from my computer.
Also used the tracking to geo-tagging my photos. Worked great!
The only problem I had was not getting the Europe map to unlock, so I bought a Preloaded map on a SD card and it worked great. Only if all the maps were that easy.
Pros: love the touch screen

This is fabulously easy to use but really way harder to see compared to my Garmin 60x. Screen very very dull at any setting. Also uses a set of batteries every day. probably because of the touch screen technology. Satisfied with it tho. kinda bulky...

PRESENTLY THE BEST MODEL ON THE MARKET
My first Garmin was a GPSMAP60CSX. That was a very good GPS for the trail but a little bit too complicated to get want you want to do. A lot of reading in the user manual to get what I want. When I tried the Oregon on the time, I knew in few minutes how to operate it. This model is very intuitive with the touch screen.
Pros: very easy to understand
Cons: no hand strap and no paper instructions manual

GREAT HUNTING GPS
This is the 7th Garmin GPS Ive owned from the first Garmin 45 to the GPSmap 76CSx. The Oregon 300 is a very nice to use. The screen is very difficult to see in bright sun light and the track manager needs software improvments.

VERY USER FREINDLY HUNTING GPS
The Oregon 300 is my 7th Garmin GPS. The first was Garmin's first the 45 back in 1995. then a 45XL etc.etd. and the best was a Garmin 76CSx until this Oregon 300 The OREGON 300 should have a better, more detailed owners manual. It's a little difficult to transfer tracks to and from the MapSourse program to the Oregon 300

GREAT GEOCACHING TOOL
I LOVE this unit. THe fact that I can load 2000 caches and attendant child waypoints from GSAK means I can geocache in a fairly wide area without the need for much pre-planning. My previous unit (still in use) is the Vista HCx - both units appear to have similar accuracy. Where this product stands out is the touchscreen (much easier for my navigator to use) and the cache description in one unit. Cons - backlight can be frustrating, forcing the user to juggle between battery longevity and the ability to see the screen. Also, if too many previous logs are loaded, the unit can lock up on the cache description page (if you limit to five you should have no issues). I can't wait to see what Garmin comes up with in the future.

EASIEST TO USE, VERY NICE UNIT!
I own a Magellan GPS 315 (gift) and a Garmin eTrex Legend - both I found difficult to use every summer after not using them during the winter. The Legend was always better to use than the Magellan - I kept the 315 only as a back up.
Compared to these two units the 300 is fantastic! After only reading a little about it on Garmin's website and watching the video they have, I have found it very easy to use. I would have rated it a full 5 if the screen was more like an Apple iTouch or iPhone. It does not have the easy movement of my Touch and the screen feels like it could easily scratch. Other that that it seems to be a great unit - screen is clear and bright enough (can always be brighter), menus are fairly easy to use and are more intuitive than my older units. I purchased the Topo map with the unit on the micro SD card - so far the map is great, only thing would have been ti have it work on your computer so you could set up the trip first on a big screen.
Cons: larger screen, thinner unit, like apple itouch

GOOD FOR TRAILS AND IN THE CAR.
I own a Garmin 60Cx and really enjoyed it. With the Oregon, the interface is the biggest step up, easy to use menus, screen sensitivity with the plastic protective layer is still good. The automotive view is another great feature. Reciever accuracy has been as good as the Cx so far. Battery life has been outstanding. Remember to update the firmware as i experienced some diffuculty with add-on maps before the update. A couple of things to be aware of, the standard topo maps don't support 3D view. Changes in the track manager cause straight lines to connect tracks to the spot you turned the GPS off last. No sattelite view so connectivity indicators are sometimes a bit off, just a few minor features missing from the Cx that i enjoyed. Overall i am very satisfied with the Oregon.
Pros: screen and interface.
Cons: sd card problems at first, but good now.

BEST SO FAR
I own 5 GPS devices. I am a charter Member Geocacher. After I learned how this devices functions worked I found it wonderful. The 3d effect is great. Some of the features view a little small for bad eyesight. Like the pointer for direction I was accustomed to a much larger one, but maybe because this thing is so full of features a larger pointer might be in there. Garmin does aggravate me by using propriety soft ware that requires a single user to buy unlock codes for each piece of equipment. They say its to keep the price down for the single user. But it punishes the single user that has invested allot more. After purchasing the new updated programs I found they still lacked several roads, & Highways. Paperless caching is nice because now I only have to carry this one device. It seems to be much more accurate overall and in the trees.
Pros: accurate and 3d shading for oregon
Cons: unlock codes required, lacks needed updated data

This is my 10th GPS, I keep up to date, I have no problem selling my old one when I update. There is no other makes of GPS that can keep up to Garmin. I've had my Oregon 300 for a year now. The brightness is for me a minor problem. I keep the software up to date. I find that I have to re-calibrate the compass when I change the batteries and if I have to use the compass I re-calibrate anyway, I want to be sure it is right on, it is like the gyros in the plane they have to be recalibrated every time you use them, you understand that you have no problem. So far this is the best I ever had, ease of operation, menus, etc. A novice can use this GPS. Geocaching wow. No problem using my old map source to load maps, upload,download, tracks waypoints,routes. Just keep the software up to date. Garmin the best.

FIRST GPS
First GPS that I have owned...Borrowed a eTrex Vista and was small and hard for my 8 year old to use while geocaching, he likes to hold us and tell us which way to go. The Oregon is much better for him and he has just about figured it all out on his own! The touch screen is great and sure the screen is a little dim, but not once have I regretted the purchase, it just isn't that big of a down side. GPS city was quick and will buy from them again!
Pros: touchscreen, paperless caching.
Cons: no street maps included, and no lanyard

It's an excellent GPS all around although I'd wouldn't rely on the digital compass as it's often wrong by 30 deg or more.
Pros: maps, tracks, and stats.

FIRST TIME GPS USER
The Oregon 300 is very easy to use especially if you are even the least bit familiar with computers in general. Compared to the 60 CSx the display (resolution) doesn't compare. Satellite signal as well very strong even in my home.
Pros: easy to use, great display
Cons: price, but it is the best out there today!

OREGON + GPS60CSX
Bought a GPS60CSx from GpsCity last year and more recently an Oregon, two great machines. Both have advantages and disadvantages but overall, the ease of use and new features of the Oregon are worth mentioning. My wife prefers the Oregon for its ease of use I programmed a Profile just for her. I definitely love these profiles which allow a quick switch between settings depending on what we are doing – geocaching, or road navigation. I was so used with the 60CSx that it took me some time to adapt but overall, the extra features are definitely a plus: size, big buttons, full name search, paperless geocaching, etc. The brightness of the screen is the negative point you need to orient it properly. A few other features are also missing that were handy with the 60CSx when Geocaching (expert mode – proximity circles). Receiver seems slightly less sensitive although it never bothered me and may be due to own I handle it… no antenna visible. Accuracy is comparable.

I LOVE THIS GPSR
The best GPS to date for geocaching (and trecking) with the Colorado but I prefer it for its touch screen others will prefer the "rock-and-roller". Very precise and sensible, easy to use, intuitive with its "touch-screen". Very fast satellite capture!!! It has a couple of little bugs in the firmware, they are minor, but I hope they will be corrected very soon.
Le meilleur GPS à date pour le géocaching (et la marche en forêt) avec le Colorado mais je le préfère pour son écran "touch-screen" d'autres préfèreront le Colorado avec sa roulette "rock-and-roller". Très sensible et précis, facile à utiliser et intuitif avec son écran et ses menus. Allumage très rapide, captage des satellites très rapide. Il a quelques bugs dans son firmware, ils sont mineurs heureusement et j'espère qu'ils seront corrigés prochainement.

I switched over from Magellan (for the last 7 years) to Garmin and WOW!
This GPS is awesome... it makes Geocaching like shooting fish in a barrel.... it is very easy to use and the menu system is intuitive.

I have been using my Oregon for a few months now and have no regrets in this purchase. Although the screen is a bit hard to see in the sunlight, I have been able to quickly adapt to new ways to view. As an avid Geocaching family we truly appreciate the paperless caching feature! Great job, Garmin... you remain tops in my book!

Once again you have out done you selves as I thought the Colorado was great but the Oregon is even better. I was up and running in less than 15 minutes. It seems to be faster and the touch screen is excellent. Thanks again Garmin. Look forward to the next one.

OREGON 300
Rate Fabulous: I can load the entire description, clue, logs etc of geocaches! No more messing around with the infrared connection to my PDA. Yes this actually works, well and easily. (Requires premium membership).
Excellent. Satellites load inside my bungalow! I can find my way to the bathroom. No, really I can check distances and bearings at home. Still excellent.
Not quite so good: Present location isn't as easy to pull up as on my previous GPSMap 60C. Confirming location with fellow-cachers leaves me saying uh, uh, uh, uh, 71 36.934 44 22.768 (or 934 768) while they wonder what's taking me so long.
Undecided: No explicit averaging to establish exact location. Maybe unit does this automatically? I can't find documentation about it. Regardless, it seems très accurate.
Useless so far: Image viewing is way too small for something like an EasyGPS waypoint view. I haven't found any use for my two gig micro SD card. And an image not configured to the screen, which is something like 300 X 200 px is rendered even smaller because the larger dimension is shortened to fit.
Jury still out: Sometimes the screen seems a little dark and has to be tilted or shadowed to be read.

Sa stabilité en général s'est beaucoup améliorée, près du but parfois il est capricieux et prend un certain temps effectivement à se stabiliser. Pour le prix on pourrait s'attendre à plus. La vitre est plutôt fragile, échappé sur une souche d'une hauteur ne dépassant pas 3 pieds (1 mêtre) elle n'a pas résistée et bien sûr cela n'est pas couvert par la garantie. Propriétaire d'un Colorado 300 et d'un 60Csx précédemment le 60 Csx a été de loin le meilleur choix qualité/prix dommage qu'il n'était pas paperless.

oregon 300 avec la nouvelle mise a jour 2.6 semble plus stable qu'au debut, les problemes de plantage paraissent regler. c est un bon gps pour le geocatching mais pour le travail je prefere le Gpsmap 60 Csx car il a plus de precision et plus de fonctions utiles!!!

I seriously regret buying this thing. As a previous buyer of a Legend, two Vistas, and a StreetPilot, I was able to use any of the Mapsource products I own on any of them. With the purchase of the Oregon 300, I find I can use none of my software, and the unit is a virtually useless $500 toy without another $130 in new software. Nowhere on Oregon's site is this little requirement written up. Notwithstanding that faux pas: The display is critically dark, and virtually unreadable in sunlight, even with the backlight on full. This results in it devouring batteries much faster than advertised too... OTOH, it seems robustly built, and the battery box holds the cells much tighter than on my last Vista (the one that turned itself off uncommanded despite numerous and varied internet "fixes" and updates from Garmin)... In the end, I feel duped by Garmin, and disappointed in myself for being an early adopter "guinea pig".

I received my Oregon 300 today. I have to say that it is easy to use. I love the layout and ease of use. I was able to use it within 1 hour of unpacking. The screen resolution is great. The turn by turn capability in the automotive mode is as expected. The ability to switch from mode to mode is outstanding.
