NUVI 850

Pros: widescreen and routing
Cons: low volume.

This one was offered at almost half the original price, and I decided to upgrade my old 350 for 2 main reasons, the widescreen and the ability to download routes. Overall it works pretty well. I found the voice recognition works great, although I'm not sure how much I'll actually use it. Do agree with another reviewer about the volume being kind of low even at max. It doesn't have some of the newest features (being a discontinued item I expected that) like the cool interchange view that shows the offramps and such.

AUTOMOTIVE GPS

Excellent GPS, performs exactly as outlined in the product description. Unfortunately Garmins maps are outdated even though I downloaded the latest map set. Took a while to figure out the speech recognition feature, have to talk slow and percise. Volume not as loud as other GPS's by Garmin

GARMIN NUVI 850

In our town, (Sioux Lookout, ON) the house numbers often indicated the wrong side of the street. In Winnipeg, it worked well.

NICE FEATURES

Pros: nice touch screen, easy to read icons
Cons: should include the sd card, battery will drain

everything works as advertised, the only minor complaint is that it should include a micro sd card. I found that I had to segment the micro sd card I had into four folders in order for the GPS to play the songs. Voice activation works fine although you have to clearly pronounce the words and speak loudly. I have the activator mount on the steering column. The easily removable battery is a plus but must be removed if the unit is not in use as it will drain down. The volume could also be louder for the speakers, even at 100% it was pretty low.

GREAT DEVICE...

Pros: good speech and talking commands.
Cons: power switch gets a little 'quirky' and sticks.

I am overall very satisfied with the product. I am a white cane user and have just enough sight to program the device and set it to pedestrian mode. when that is done, I use the remote to voice command the unit to giving me the route that I want to take and then it speaks as I go along the route. That increases my independence and the voices are nice and loud in urban situations like being in toronto. . . :)

GARMIN NUVI 850

Pros: lots
Cons: like to disable auto start when starting car.

You have got to love the voice commands. It takes a while to get to know how to talk to Nuvi but good when you can.All round a good unit and with the My Garmin Agent updating is a breeze.Downloading POI off Mapquest is also a simple task.It is so user friendly and the street name anouncements a real plus.I was not disapointed.

DOES NOT MATCH MY EARLIER GARMIN 2620

Pros: faster than the 2620, better to search poi's.
Cons: poor compass and directional indicators

Compared to my earlier Garmin 2620, it has several key features missing. I miss the directional heading compass the 850 only shows general directions like N,S,E,W,and NW,etc. Unlike the 2620 it does not allow the temporary suspension of routing and to resume at a later point. The 850 is difficult to input via points, it does not allow daily trip logs like the 2620. The voice recognition is nice but any little background noise like a little wind or rain on the windshield, she doesn't hear me.

GREAT UNIT

Upgraded from a 780 when I broke the screen, absolutely love the voice recognition. Some menus are better/more functional. Currently working through the screen shading issue mentioned in adjacent review. Mine hav 2009 map set activated June 2008 out of the box and was fine. When I upgraded to the 2009.11 map set is when I experienced the green shading at all zoom levels. Tech walked me through a rest which fixed it... until the next time I used it. Problem returned, will call again tomorrow morning. My experience with gadget tech support is you have to call back until you get the person that has experience with your specific unusual problem. Patience will prevail! By the way, don't miss the bluetooth in the 780, no one could hear what I was saying because with the unit on the windshield the road noise competed with my voice unless I shouted.

EXCELLENT GPS AND A MAPPING NOTE

Pros: voice recognition,screen,fast acquisition
Cons: ships with bad map set, microsd instead of sd

I went from a Nuvi 780 to this unit when the price cut happened. I am very pleased with the upgrade. I wasn't using Bluetooth so I didn't miss it from the 780, and I absolutely LOVE the voice navigation. The fact that you can turn off the dreaded AUTO ZOOM is worth the upgrade price alone.

The unit I received came loaded with the Mapsource 2009 map set (activated June 2008 according to my.garmin.com). With this map set I experienced a bug in the terrain mapping data in my area.

The terrain shading is visible on the 850 when you use north-up or track-up map modes. Normally this information is visible when you zoom out to 5 miles or wider, and disappears below 5 miles. With the 2009 map set mentioned above, the terrain information DID NOT DISAPPEAR AT ANY ZOOM LEVEL. This made maps zoomed to 0.3mi unusable because the green terrain shading blocked out most of the street labels. I upgraded to the latest firmware and it did not fix the problem.

Garmin technical support was no help. It appears Garmin is using foreign contractors for tech support because all I received in return were canned responses even after multiple rounds of detailed problem explanations and screen shots.

The problem went away when I upgraded to the 2009.11 map set, which I received as a free upgrade from Garmin unrelated to this technical issue.

Did you know you can get a free map upgrade from Garmin within 60 days of your GPS purchase? I discovered this little fact when I found my new Nuvi 850 arrived with a nearly 1-year-old map set. I emailed Garmin support and asked them if it would be possible to get a free map upgrade. Yes, it was! According to support, you have sixty days from time of purchase to request a free map update to the most current map set. Apparently this is for any GPS they sell. All that was required was an emailed proof of purchase. They "pushed" the free upgrade to my my.garmin.com account, and it downloaded and installed fine.

So here's a summary for those considering a purchase of this unit: 1. The map set that ships with the unit has a bug in the data that causes terrain shading to be displayed at all zoom levels in north-up and track-up modes.

2. Updating the map set fixed the bug.

3. You get a free map update within 60 days of purchase if you email Garmin support and ask for it.

Now that it has a bug free map set I am loving this GPS. The one minor irritant is the use of MicroSD cards for memory storage. I have lots of spare standard SD cards from my digital cameras, but I had to buy a micro card to use in the 850.

NUVI 850

Had it for a couple of months now. Used it to help me get to places I've never been to before. Works real well. The only downside, which is small, is that when speaking a street address (example, house number) it sometimes adds numbers to the address I never said. All in all a good product.

GARMIN NUVI 850

I was looking around for a GPS to replace my old one and it seems that Garmin still had the best all around GPS out the. There are some less than stellar reviews on some models so I was careful to review. I chose the 850 and I am very happy with it. The speech recognition is far better than I ever dreamed of and it makes using the 850 when driving very safe. The remote on/off for the speech recognition (attaches to your steering wheel) not only is convienient but again is a very practical device that prevents normal conversation (or your radio) from sending the GPS on a tailspin. The voice recognition works that well. If I'd had known this before, I would have gotten a model with bluetooth for my phone. I think that this would have made calling truely hands free. The GPS is very easy to navigate through, I had no problems with navigating through the menus. They were laid out well I thought. I might get an extension antenna although I have heard some not so nice things about the Garmin models. I have some other 3rd party antenna in my shopping cart now that has good reviews. It's too bad such a good GPS should have as many negative reviews on their attachments as Garmin does. Getting to where you need to go is easy with this model. It seems to know everything and easily navigates to where you want to go. On the negative side... I'm still working on finding some. If I want to be fussy, the female voices should be friendly! They are pretty dry.

PS: Download the manual from the Garmin web site. The quick guide can be misleading and doesn't explain how to set up the speech recognition etc. that is obviously of very high importance.

BEST NUVI YET!

Garmin has really done a great job with the 850! Here is what I have found after a weekend of use: It locks on to Satellites and gets your location within seconds. The speech recognition is very polished and does a great job responding to voice commands. I didn't think this feature would be such a big deal, but using it while driving I found it very useful. On the road and speaking a command instead of trying to watch the GPS and press the screen to get what you want is a huge improvement. Also, the remote control to activate the speech recognition is small and easy to operate. I've found that the touch screen is very sensitive. With the 700 series Nuvis it took a little bit too much force for the screen to respond I thought. The 850 is perfect. The batteries in both the Nuvi unit and the remote are now user replaceable which is a huge bonus. I also love the lesser known feature to do with sending addresses and points from Google Maps to your Garmin device (not just the 800 series). For more info Google for 'google maps add favorite garmin' and it'll be the first result.
