GARMIN NUVI 550
Pros: great for car use. Cons: marginal for m/c.
Great for car!Not so good for motorcycle. The problem is the screen washes out (even on a overcast day).I purchased the Garmin 665 Zumo thinking it would be better...WRONG!The 665 is NO better than the Nuvi 550.Called Garmin and asked why they would offer a gps that washed out in direct light and they could care less!!I mentioned my m/c dash is all led and I can see it in all light conditions,Again they could care less.Kept the 550 and returned the overpriced 665 Zumo.

NUVI 550 NOT FOR OFF ROAD
Not suitable for off roading. The power connection fails with vibration. It should be a single RCA type connection. Fine for the car or perhaps the right street bike.

EXTINCT
Pros: small, geocache ability. Cons: small screen, no blue tooth, lane assist.
I have used this unit since 2009 and served me well for thousands of miles both on bike & car. I have direct wired to both a trail & highway bike. Last March I left unit plugged into my trail bike overnight (turned off) and next morning the battery on bike was dead. Then a few weeks ago I left in my car plugged in but turned off again, didnt use this vehicle for about a week. Went to start the car and battery was dead. It was not until I put it on my street bike F800 BMW for a ride following day and found this battery dead as well that I clued into the fact these battery failures were due to GPS. Garmin USA said I could send it into Montreal for a replacement unit exchange for $99.00 but I could use one with Blue tooth and perhaps larger screen. The Nuvi 220 is the exact same unit but has Blue tooth and seems like will replace the 550. I recommend to anyone to buy the 220 or if you can justify the big buck Zumo models with larger screens, lane assist, Blue tooth etc.

I LOVE LOLA
Pros: size quality and price Cons: doesn't have bluetooth
This is my first GPS and I love her. We needed a GPS for a recent trip to Phoenix and I wanted a waterproof GPS to use on my motorcycle. She functions perfect and is just the right size and price. Shipping was very fast. Couldn't be happier.

QWERTY KEYBOARD LAYOUT
Pros: waterproof, vibration proof, drop proof Cons: keyboard layout should be qwerty from the factory.
To those of you who are annoyed at the lack of a qwerty keyboard here is a tip for you. Connect the unit to your PC via the USB cable. Dig through the files, The file you are looking to alter is called British English.gtt. In the file you will see a long string string of letters ABCDEF... as well as the same in lower case. Highlight this text and replace with qwerty. I personally changed this up slightly, I put the letter P on the lower line by putting the P before the qwerty, this way I have 4 large rows of letters that are physically bigger making it easier to use with gloves as apposed to 5 smaller rows. Make sure to put 7 spaces after the period.
Not sure if I can post a link but here is one with more detailed information on the process. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=610365&page=2

VERSATILE UNIT
Pros: lots of useful features
I use this unit both on my motorcycle and in my truck. It's very user-friendly and although its internal battery has about a three hour limit, it was simple enough to wire a lighter receptacle to my bike and therefore not an issue.

REASONABLE PRICE FOR FEATURE MOTORCYCLE GPS
Pros: reasonable price, solid unit, works with mapsource Cons: smaller screen than zumo models
I have used the Nuvi 550 for the past motorcycle season and found it to be an excellent, durable unit for motorcycle use. I purchased the Nuvi 550 Auto/Moto bundle and added the motorcycle power cable so I can charge it while riding.
Despite another review stating that it does not work with MapSource, I have been doing so for the past season. You will get MapSource as an option when you update your map via the USB connection to your computer. It was not well described in the Garmin manual but a quick question via email resulted in step by step instructions within 48 hours.
I would recommend adding a visor on the RAM mount which can be purchased on eBay for about $5.00.
I am about to order another Nuvi 550 bundle for my wife's motorcycle.

NOT THE BEST MOTORCYCLE GPS
Pros: size and price Cons: usb power connection
I am currently working with GPS City to explore my options on returning this item. I purchased it in the middle of a round north america trip and was not satisfied with the product. It works fine on battery power but will not stay connected via the USB cord with any consistency. It looses power, goes into transfer mode and is generally unreliable as a powered unit on a motorcycle.

GOOD PRODUCT BUT WITH STUPID KEYBOARD LAYOUT
Pros: not too expansive Cons: stupid "abcd" keyboard layout, no lifetime maps
I bought it to replace my Garmin 1390LMT which featured lifetime maps. I know i was to loose the map updates but because i wanted to use it with my motorcycle, i was ready for that.
I checked other models offered by Garmin (motorcycle compatible) and they were all way too expansives. When i received the Nuvi 550, first thing i did was to update it with the latest firmware and maps.
After doing that, i started to use it and bang! The stupid "ABCD" keyboard layout was in front of me when i was to enter a new destination. Damn it's bad! I'm an IT P. Engineer and i type qwerty keyboard quite fast. I was really annoyed with the Nuvi 550 keyboard. But i know i have to deal with it because it is the only motorcycle compatible Nuvi GPS at a good price.
Maybe the stupid keyboard layout is there to "convince" poeple like me to buy the new models with way higher prices... Anyway, i'm

GOOD BASIC MOTORCYCLE GPS BUT...
Pros: affordable, easy to use Cons: no support to mapsource, no bluetooth.
Good basic motorcycle GPS but don't expect too much from this model. No Bluetooth connection to your helmet. Doesn't support Mapsource. If you don't need these, this model may be for you. Needs a separate cable for motorcycle connection.

NOT IMPRESSED
Pros: cheap Cons: cheap
I bought this device to use on my dual sport bike. software is not user friendly. When I first downloaded the software for the maps it kept telling me to update and then when I did it said I was up to date and kept this up 10 times.I sent a message to their tech support and got some stupid message back about a week later to try to reboot my computer. When I loaded the Topo maps I kept getting an error message and then after 10 attempts it finally showed up on my computer. When I design a route and try to load it onto the device it usually takes 5 or 6 trys before it magically appears. I have a Mac computer so I dont know if it is a compatability problem or what. Battery life is also inadequate, I had to install a power outlet to keep unit running past 3 or 4 hours.

GREAT GPS OVERALL
Pros: great basic no frills gps Cons: no qwerty keyboard auto recalc only
Great motorcycle gps. I use this offroad and it's held up for years on some very rugged terrain. Originally I thought the 10 route limit would be a problem but it isn't. You can load a zillion routes on the micro sd card and import them as needed. There are a couple of items that are bothersome to me: there is no qwerty keyboard option and there is no option to turn off recalculating. The keyboard is just annoying. The automatic recalculating though is a real problem. Because you can't hear the audio while riding, you have to keep a constant watch on the display. I've missed a turn and because it automatically recalculates, I didn't know it until I was way off course. I agree with the earlier review about the lack of a sound jack. Being able to hear the directions would be extremely helpful, I bought this unit because it was waterproof and relatively inexpensive. It was a good choice.

GREAT BASIC UNIT
Pros: touchscreen works with gloves on Cons: short battery life
If you don't need all the extras (bluetooth, mp3 player, audio out), this is an excellent unit. The touch-screen works fine with motorcycle gloves, as well as MapSource. The battery could be better, so plan on keeping it plugged in for longer drives. I would give it five stars, but it's basically a bare-bones unit.

DISAPPOINTING!
Pros: package is good value at sale price. Cons: unexpected database errors erode confidence.
Difficult to see and hear on a motorcycle. An audio output jack for headphones would be helpful. GPS receiver is very sensitive. The unit seems very rugged. Database led me astray twice once in St. George Utah, where it put me on two different dead-end streets enroute my destination from Las Vegas, and once in Cedar City Utah, where it tried to direct me about 10 miles southwest of the Cedar City NAPA store destination address.

GREAT MOTORCYCLE GPS
Pros: great battery life, easy to use interface. Cons: usb cable must be purchased separately.
For the price, this a fantastic unit for use on your motorcycle, and the package contains "just about" everything you need to get started.
Be advised that if you want to plug into your computer and update the maps (and you should), you'll need a USB cable (not included in package). If you want to plug into the wall to recharge the battery (so you can use it on a bike or hike), you'll need an adapter (not included in package).
All in all though, this is a great unit for the price.
