GOOD GPS FOR THE PRICE
Pros: fast, accurate, cheap, no useless bells & whistles Cons: pronunciation of european street names, u-gurn
I bought this gps mostly for use in USA and Europe. Bought the $100 additional chip for europe (micro-SD with adapter for SD slot). It worked great in Romania, Hungary, Austria and Germany with only one hiccup (confused by a new interchange east of Munich). Very quick to recalculate when a deviation from its recommended route became necessary and impressively accurate. I don't use it much where I live (northern BC, Canada) since I know where I'm going most of the time but it seems good there too. Had it on on the flight from Frankfurt to Vancouver and it accurately depicted the coast of Greenland and Baffin Island. I was able to identify several features as we flew over -- neat!
Only downside so far is laughable pronunciation of European street names and its inability to say "U-turn" which comes out as "U-Gurn". Most European street names cannot be found at the intersections in time to be useful so we just ignored that announcement and relied on the "turn left in 200 metres" type of info which worked very well.

GARMIN 255W
Found item unreliable in giving directions, takes one on a wild goose chase using sideroads vice more direct routes. When recalculating it points one in the opposite direction. Very confusing and a waste of time. Not recommended.
[Ed. note: Hi Karl. Here's a few things you can do to try to correct these problems: 1) Make sure that you have your route preferences set accordingly (shorter distance, less fuel, etc.). 2) Check that you do not have your GPS set to avoid highways. 3) Update the firmware in your GPS. 4) If all else fails, give Garmin a call at 1-800-800-1020. These are issues that all can be corrected.]

DOES NOT DISPLAY SURROUNDING STREET NAMES
Pros: fast to lock on to satellite, fast to calc a route Cons: bare min stret names on map, freezes up on recalc
Like Bill Bob said, I bought the 255W as an upgrade to my older Garmin C330 StreetPilot and in fact it was a down grade. Specifically when driving or navigating, the C330 displayed every street within its 4.3" screen and this was a great feature when trying to find streets near you. The 255W picks and chooses what street names to display and that hinders my ability to find side streets near me. I tried a Tom Tom thinking it was better that Garmin but sadly not, so does anyone know of a modern GPS that displays all streets names near my car when driving let me know please (oakville37@yahoo.com) and I'll go check it out. One last thing about the 255W, when you are in navigate mode and make a wrong turn and it has to recalculate it has a 80% freeze up rate and this I cannot live with using this GPS, only thing to fix it is recycle the power and reploy your route, I'm thinking I might have a defective unit but does any other 255W owner experience this happening?

WHAT STREET?
Pros: fairly good maps, good display and eay to use. Cons: routiong and no names.
Does not display street names. Maybe 2 or three at best. I like to see the name of streets coming up but good luck with this brand. Had a Harman Karden that I thought was not so good but it had almost every street connected to your current route named. Also, not so good with routing. Takes me straneg places and I have tried every setting.

IF YOU DON'T MIND WILD GOOSE CHASES!
This GPS is absolutely aweful for travelling anywhere north of Hwy 401 in Ontario. GPS is constantly recommending shortcuts which take one off 80km/h roads onto twisty dirt roads, some of which end in dead ends. On a trip from Belleville to North Bay, the GPS several times recommends getting off of Hwy 11 (100km/h limit) onto side roads running parallel to the major hwy for the sake of saving a few kms at a significant loss of time even though options on GPS are set to take fastest route. On return trip GPS recommending taking a side road near Bancroft that would be 15 minute time loss over travelling main hwy's. If you travel in Northern Ontario, save your money and buy a TomTom.
[Ed. note: Bushboar, make sure you have your GPS settings set properly. Check for Fastest Route versus Shortest Route. I had the same problem in Los Angeles once and it was due to improper settings for the routing.]

GETS YOU CLOSE, BUT PAY ATTENTION.
Pros: works well. easy to see and hear. Cons: maps of even old things are off a bit.
Hardwarewise there's no complaints. It works quite well, except I don't think you can use the GPS (like to look something up) when it is connected to the USB port of the computer. Firmwarewise some things are a little obtuse, like 4 to 5 pokes just to changes the display brightness? The voices have a bit of trouble pronouncing things like boulevard. You would think something like that would be hardwired to make sure it's right. Mapwise, well (even with the most recent update)... I live in a small town in New Mexico. Not very much, including the Spanish Mission that has been here since the 1500's and the airport that is about 6kms south of town, is in the right place. The airport is right near my house IN town. Entering my address ends up about 2 blocks down the road, and it can't even get me from my house to work 1.25 miles away without a major mess-up (i.e. the sidewalk across the college campus is not a road and never has been in at least 20 years). I submitted some corrections, but there's really just too many of them. In Austin, TX it did fairly well at getting me around, but things like the La Quinta hotel where I stayed was announced as being on the wrong side of the road ("on left"). 'On left' was an on-ramp back on to the freeway. I fell for it the first time. Problems like that. It did have new stores that had just recently opened. GPSCity buying and shipping was quick quick!

DECENT UNIT
Pros: price point, easy to use Cons: satellite issues, takes long way home sometimes
I purchased this to replace the same one some *&^% person took from my unlocked vehicle in my driveway. It is a good unit. As a mobile Disc Jockey, I am often going out of town or to places I am unfamiliar with so it is very helpful and easy to use. It does sometimes have trouble figuring out where it is (unable to locate satellite), or it wants to take you on a route that is not the fastest / most direct. In the winter months, if left in the vehcile, it has a difficult time acquiring a signal...I am thinking that may have something to do with the cold temperature and sensitive electronics.
I recently purchased the bracket to put it on my motorbike for trips, but it is not that easy to see the screen with sunglasses on and a sunny day. It would be nice if you could hook an earpiece up to it so you can at least hear the directions...If you cannot see it or hear it, it is not much use. I am going to have to do some more research before deciding what to purchase next for my bike.
All in all, for a general application it is a decent unit. Good value for the price. GPS City is great to work with also. Super fast shipping, they keep you informed of every step of the transaction. They beat Walmarts price witht the shipping included! (Than Walmart put it on sale the next week for even cheaper....Oh well)
As long as you tell it where you want to go, it will get you there.

GARMIN NUVI 255W
I like this GPS, it is working well for me so far. I do find it takes a while to locate itself when I've turned it on in a different place than where I last turned it off, which might mean I have to park and wait for it to track satellites for 3 minutes or so- which is a problem for me as I can be fairly impatient. It was shipped very quickly- I ordered on a Thursday noontime, paid for regular (5-7 day) shipping but it arrived to my door in Vancouver the very next day.
My only complaint is that I was comparing the 1490 and 255W earlier in the week (and even earlier in the morning the day I purchased) as they were similar in price, and had decided to go with the 1490. But when I went to place the order, I found that the 1490 price had gone up $80 or $100 since I'd last looked at 8am that morning. When I called about this, GPS City was not willing to honor the price from earlier in the day. Also, I did see the 265WT (same thing as 255W but with Bluetooth) at Costco for the same price as I paid for the 255W once it got delivered, but I guess I can feel better about supporting a Canadian company that provides customer service and support rather than Costco. Hopefully my next company car already has Bluetooth in it like my current one does.

Pros: reliable, beautifull unit.best value for money Cons: none
Purchased 4 of these nice units with lifetime update cards. No problems at all with these items. Just like new right out of the box, no scratches etc. Works very well even in the mountain regions Banff etc. No complaints other than they do not pick the shortest route, always directs to the main highway first then sorts thing out, minor thing. VERY GOOD FOR THE PRICE
Pros: cheap gps with all that you really need Cons: slow redrawing, shut down problem
I got this at 130 dollars here, which is half price compared to some places. The GPS got to my place in London, Ontario in a day and a half or something like that, so super fast.
The text-to-speech feature is really useful (it tells you not only to turn right, but to turn right on Hawthorne Rd, for instance, so you can look our for that particular road), no point in saving a few dollars to get the cheaper versions without it. Wide screen is not really important. It just looks better.
The GPS can be terrible at giving directions downtown. It can tell you to turn right and when you just made it to the right lane it tells you to turn left in 10 metres and then right again. It is often dangerous or impossible to do this with all the traffic. Otherwise it just works. It's great.
Some roads are not up to date, although I made sure to download the latest map. Around University of Western Ontario it kept trying to take me along one way streets and into parking areas when I just wanted to go through to the other side of the university. Apparently Tom Tom is better in this sense. I trust Garmin because their handhelds are superb, but I don't know, Tom Tom could well be superior.
The computer on this thing is slow. Navigating maps (dragging) is a pain because it takes too much time redrawing. I accept it given the price. Menus work great. Fuel economy function is cool, although I haven't really tried to see whether it gives accurate data.
Visibility is good, there is a night setting to avoid glare too. Light and easy to carry.
The only serious problem - the GPS sometimes shuts down for no reason when unplugged, although fully charged. Not a big deal for me, since I always use it plugged in. I may or may not ask for a new one..

A GOOD AUTOMOTIVE GPS BUT NOT A GREAT ONE.
Pros: very user friendly right out of the box Cons: navtec logic does not always choose the best route
This unit is very easy to use right out of the box, it's only for some of the more complicated features that you need to refer to the manual. My biggest complaint is the navigation logic, it may select the shortest route but not the quickest or safest route. A winding, twisty-turny road may be fun on a sunny summer afternoon but not so with just a hint of snow or black ice. Stops with 90 degree turns and steeper hills are not factored into the equation. More stops means longer drive time, and I would rather avoid steep hills and sharp turns when it's snowy. Not to mention fuel economy going out the window when it selects the route with extra stops and at least one stop at bottom of a steep hill (on the way up.) I have only used it "around home" where I already know my way so can "get a feel for" it capabilities and it is quite impressive aside from the navigation quirks. I've heard that other GPS units will try to bring you into almost any major airport across the runway if you are approaching from that direction (i.e. Toronto airport from Hamilton or Burlington) I don't think airport security would allow that.

Garmin model 255w doesn't have the whistles and bells of other high end , high priced GPS units but this unit has exactly what the end users probably wou wants and even more , what you need to get from point a to b. I have owned several Garmin units, last one 7200 Streetpilot until my car was broken into... This unit is small, light and works like a charm. with the 4.5 screen , even a blind bat like me can see screen. It has all the features I would ever need or even use. Oh sure lane advisor is nice, but if the US is anything like here in Canada, too many changes to highways do occur. Check it out, priced right and nice to use.

Used this item one day before the voice quit on it. You can't just send it back where you bought it. You have to stay on the phone with a Garmin service rep for an hour just for them to tell you in the end where to send it. I had to send it off to Quebec to be fixed and even though i paid for a new one they sent a refurbished one back that still had addresses in it from the last person that had it in Ontario. Will be looking for other brands from now on.

NUVI 255W
Pros: great size, features and widescreen is the best. Cons: none really. voices could be less "robotic".
I've bought 3 of these. Excellant unit. Has everything I want and more. Widescreen IS the way to go. For the money and features, THIS is the best unit.

SCREEN/GEOGRAPHIC POSITIONING
Pros: good notice of turns Cons: doesn't use secondary roads for deviations
A good screen size, easy to read and the audio is easy to hear from the driver position.
Geographic positioning is not that great in our home area, probably due to incomplete recording of rural areas. We have had trouble locating addresses in the country, to the point of impossible, yet the maps show the roads addresses are on,

THIS UNIT HAS LOCKED UP
4 times the unit locked up when I put in a go to location. Either the screen goes blank and says drawing or else only the car and picture freeze but the mileage and distance still work

GREAT GPS FOR THE MONEY
Pros: easy to read, easy to understand
I bought this for my wife, and took it with me on a long trip through L.A., and the bay area. Very easy too see and follow. I found 2 faults that are pretty minor but worth mentioning. If getting off a major highway for a gas stop or something, the unit re-routes but tries to send you in a roundabout way rather than turning back the way you came. Don't really like the way the automatic detour works, I wish it had a setting so you could specify the miles of detour you need rather than attempting to put you back on your original route as soon as possible.

GARMIN NUVI 255W
Very easy learning curve (for us old folks!). You can spend more money, but the 255W is probably the best bang for your buck. I've recommended it to many of my friends.

GARMIN NUVI 255W PRE-LOADED AUTO-ROUTING VOICE GUI
Easy to use GPS. The large wide screen makes it easy & safer to monitor with a quick glance thus your eyes are back on the road quickly. The clear voice dirctions are also an added safety feature allowing the driver to stay focused on the road. Larger hands can also work the soft touch screen easier due to it's larger width. Acquires Satellite fixes quickly. Prices at GPS City are good and the service is excellent.

EFFICIENT AND GREAT VALUE
Excellent GPS for everyday use. Maps are accurate for the Montreal and Quebec city area ( other areas remain to be seen ). Satellite fix is fast, although sometime the unit get confused on its actual location. Great service from gpscity.ca.

I particularly like the net-turn arrow in the upper left corner of the screen. My Nuvi 255W has worked dependably since I got it. The voice directions are clear and concise.

I like the fact that purchasing the nuvi 255w was very easy and shipping was quick. As for using the gps itself, it is very user friendly and saved me alot of grief in the city trying to find places that I had never been. I highly recommend this product.

Anyone know if they plan to allow downloadable maps for this GPS? If it did it would be a terrific unit, I did not know it could not dlwnload updated maps until I had bought it. Trying to decide if I will keep it with this big omission or not???

I purchased this unit because it was able to get traffic updates, gas station prices, movies etc. and found out afterwords that the "optional" receiver has not yet even been manufactured. Now I am out $299 for a unit that will not function as advertised. I called Garmin and they said there was nothing they could do, that they were not sure when the Garmin GDB 55 MSN Direct Receiver would be available, the customer service rep said they had received a Memo, stating it was due to technical problems and it would be Aug 24th at the earliest, more likely September and posibly October, before the receiver "should" be ready for distibution. What a mess, this is likely my last Garmin Product, they have really gone down hill, and there stock value is taking a nosedive also.

Best price on the web even compared to Garmin and GPSCITY in USA.
Excellent product with good basic featues such as WHERE AM I but without the extraneous MP3, Bluetooth add-on's. Best value for the price for me. This is my first GPS and am very satisfied. Manufacturer could have thrown in a USB cable in the box as they offer free downloads in the User Manual!

NUVI 255W
This product is a great buy for the price. It has the new interface which has the speed and arrival time on the bottom of the map. It has the next turn icon at the top of the map. It is very similar in features to the nuvi 750 but way faster mapping and turn on time. It does not allow my custom speech messages for my poi but i expect that is because it does not play mp3's. I also find that street names are pronounced clearer then the 750 i had. Purchasing from GPS City was a no hassle excellent experience.
