GOOD VALUE

Pros: easy to use
Cons: update is tricky

This was my first gps so I have nothing else to compare it to. It works very well, and is easy to understand. Only problem I have with it is the Lifetime Maps will not update properly.

NICE FEATURE

Pros: lifetime map, lane and junction assist
Cons: dashmount disc not include in the package

That my second Garmin. My first one was a 255W bought 2 year ago (good GPS). I give it to my son to travel at the college 3 hours from my place. I bought the 2450LM for me and I choose it for the large screen, free lifetime map update, lane and junction assist, speed limit indicator. I realy enjoy all that features.

NUVI 2450 BEST GPS I'VE EVER USED

Pros: route programming, and lane selection.
Cons: none so far

This is my 3rd Garmin GPS and it is by far the best. Of course the large screen is nice but it's the programming that I like.

One of my other GPS systems is the Zumo550 for motorcycles and I really fell in love with the ability to program your own routes. I recently finished programing a 10 day car tour through New England for my 2450. I'm using MapSource to do the mapping and uploading it to the 2450. Works great.

I like the self design menu page for the 2450 as well. You can put your favorite searches like gas stations or hotels right on the main menu. Very handy.

The powered cradle like the Zumo models is brilliant, no more wrestling with tiny power cables in the dark. The power goes into the cradle and the nuvi 2450 just clics on and of in milli seconds.

I purchased the 2450LM because I already had a lifetime traffic power cable from an earlier model. You just plug in the traffic power cable to the nuvi2450 cradle and after it downloads some software, you now have free traffic as well.

The lane selector while on the freeway is a nice touch as well, it shows you well in advance what lane you should be in. Comes in handy when you et into heavy ruch hour traffic and are trying to exit the freeway.

Overall I love this GPS.

GREAT NAVIGATIONAL AID

The most important function of a GPS is to get you from Point A to Point B and the 2450 does an excellent job. Great screen with an adjustable back ground colour (pick a different country if you don't like the colour shown, speed indicator on major highways, louder than a 755 and no more "Recalculating" which may be bad or good, depending on our own opinion. One user indicate that the unit does not tun itself or on or off and it must be done manually, this is incorrect. I ordered a GPS without a Bluetooth feature because you should not drive and talk in the first place and the traffic feature, while somewhat helpful is not a 100% reliable (not a fault of the GPS, but the traffic reporting system). All in all a "highly recommended" unit

VERY INTERESTING GPS

I love it. It's easy to use and to make itineraries. It's easy to transfer itineraries from TYRE. The voice and the pronunciation (in French) are better than in the model 265W. The 5"screen is interesting to. I recommend it.

GOOD PERFORMER

Pros: quick, responsive, lots of features, bright screen
Cons: none so far.

This is a big performance improvement over my old 255W. More features, the screen is bright enough during the day, even at its default battery setting of 70%. I use polarized glasses, and its easy to see.

Stayed away from the traffic version as I have been told it shows advertising...no thanks!

Haven't noticed the "zoom issue" being an "issue". My eyes spend most of their time looking at the road.

Also, the unit does turn off, when power it disconnected. So if you have a vehicle that doesn't shut off power to the 12V outlets(like most pickups), you will have to power it down manually.

GOOD UNIT WITH HUGE FLAW, ZOOM RESETS.

Pros: main menu customization, fast, 5" screen
Cons: autozoom resets, custom pois broken

If you are familiar with the Garmin Nuvi family you know about most of the features packed in this unit. The features that made me decide to buy this unit was the 5" screen and custom avoidances that allows me to select roads to exclude from routes. Another nice new feature is the customizable Main Menu screen. It really is a great feature.

But there is a major issue with the 24XX series. The Autozoom feature. With the older models of the Nuvi you could select the highest zoom level that it would display the map on the screen. With the 24XX series it resets everytime the unit is shut off. This means that every time you power the nuvi and start driving it will zoom out to 0.5miles (800meters) if you are driving on the highway or a major road or if you drive over 90kms/hr or instead to 800ft (200meters) for everything else. You can afterwards choose your preferred zoom setting and it will stick as long you keep the unit powered. Why is this bad? First it takes away choice, and the second is the way maps are rendered at high zoom levels. At 0.5mile zoom the map is useless, all it gets displayed are highways and/ or major roads, everything else is not displayed. If you are driving on a secondary road over 90km/s hour it will zoom out and it will look like you are driving off road because theres no road showing in your position. Its a huge issue for me, its illegal in New Brunswick, Canada to program GPS's while driving, and thats exactly when the unit zooms out and I have to select my preferred zoom level (500meters). This is so irritating. I am seriously considering returning this unit because of this. This unit could be a great machine but the autozoom issue is a deal breaker. Stay away from the 24XX. Garmin needs to start listening to its customers again.

MAPS UPDATE

Pros: great machine, way better than any tom tom
Cons: none, works what is should be doing

someone wrote about maps not being updated properly,, here is the reason why,

with any GPs like Tom Tom, Magellan, Nav,Asus, Sony, car factory Nav and Garmin. They only check POI and maps of new streets and roads every 2 years and then another 6 months to 1 year to roll out the updated exits and streets.

for example, if you update your map to North American street maps to 2011, reality is, its only updated from 2009. This is common with all updates. Its a lot of information coming from thousand of city/state/provincial/national transportation planners that either havent send the new updates or have a deadline that haven't met with the GPS companies.

so if you have a bridge or a new exit or a new turnpike or new street that just completed being built, you will only see it in 2 to 3 years time.

The XML platform is not the compatible between cities/ governments. Tom Tom and Garmin have to modify the xml they receive. Thus why sometimes the directions tells you to turn too late or too early. Blame your local government for that.

take Tom Tom, it will lead you to a completly different longer way when returning your rental car at LAX. The Garmin will take you directly a lot quicker in a shorter distance. the XML from Department of Transportation format transformation from LAX to Garmin is greatly process properly.

this is the same as Garmin nuvi 3790 but a bigger screen and cheaper price tag.

TOO SOON TO TELL

Pros: big screen
Cons: very short usb cable for connection to a computer.

This unit replaces a StreetPilot 2720. So far all I've done is navigate a mile with it and update the maps. I like the larger and easier to read screen.

SOMEWHAT BELOW EXPECTATION

Pros: easy to setup
Cons: latest maps not up-to-date, navigation glitches...

Product arrived in a timely manner and well packaged.

Instructions were clear, installation quick and simple.

Touch screen is less responsive/intuitive than what I am accustomed from my smartphone screen.

Bright large screen.

No dashboard mounting disk was included. I had to request it directly from Garmin. It was free of charge - why not just include it?

Come with free lifetime map updates. I downloaded the latest available maps but there are areas where I live that are not on the map. For example and new road built two years ago is not on.

Points of interest are seriously lacking in completeness while some obscure POIs show up.

Navigation routes seem just a bit off. Testing it in my neighborhood I notice that the most direct route is not always presented, but it does get me where I want to go most of the time.

There is a road that has been closed (withe gates) for decades that the gps thinks is open.

The unit does not turn off when the vehicle is turned of. It has to be turned of manually. It takes two steps to turn off: a physical button on top of the unit and then a touchscreen confirmation button. It is inconvenient and I often forget to turn it off which results in a brightly lit screen on my dashboard at night when parked - quite the lure thieves.

The unit does not turn on automatically when vehicle is started.

GOOD GPS

Pros: large, light weight, picks up sats easily
Cons: after rec't,walmart put it on sale for $36 less.

Replaces my Lowrance 500 Iway GPS. Took awhile to understand Garmin screen logic/virtual controls. Would prefer more commands from map screen, to adjust volume, to repeat voice directions, to adjust screen brightness, to add a new POI. Would like Garmin to allow ALL POI's to show up on the map when you zoom in, so u can search where u might find a place to lunch, or see what shops are nearby, without backing out to the POI screen and selcting what type of search, then selecting groups of POI. Lowrance had this technology 8 years ago. Garmin, at least let me search by POI group, then by approx spelling. Took unit out on two 600 mile trips. Maps were very up to date, with only one newer POI missing. Would prefer a option to show all the rest stops ahead on route without jumping back and forth to actually find them (search rest stop). Would prefer I could download the instruction manual, instead of being able to view it on-line only. Better yet, paper manual in one language (my choice) would be better. No I prefer not to print the pages my self. Did find the car power cord became very inflexiable after being left in the car, in Minn. Would like Garmin to start "new buttons requested" on their website, forgetting the Garmin garage and mutiple vehicles. So users could suggest simple buttons to be addded to assit in POI searches. Suggest the right side destination times and distance be made transparent and simplified to take up about the same amount of space, but to inclue more information. Still have several features to try out, but All in All, one of Garmin's better units, especially with free lifetime maps.
