EXCELLENT GPS UNIT
Pros: lane change directions.
I had the Nuvi 1450 for a few years until one day while it sat in my coat pocket, I caught said pocket in the car door while getting in. Needless to say, that rendered it useless. (The Nuvi not the pocket.)
This model, Nuvi 1490, is exactly the same, no better or worse than the 1450. To me Garmin simply changed the model number.

GREAT VALUE
Pros: great price, features, lifetime maps Cons: poor memory utilization
This is a great value for the cost. It is an excellent GPS with bluetooth capability that allows it to work with your cell phone as a hands free device. The lifetime maps feature is a real plus. However, the way this device uses memory could stand to be improved. You can only load all the current North American maps into it by deleting extra voices, graphics, etc. from the GPS. You can install a substantially sized micro SD card to add memory, but it will not allow the main maps to be installed there.

GOOD ONE, BUT MISSED BASIC FUNCTIONALITY
Pros: big screen, easy navigation, bluetooth Cons: do not have 'avoid/include toll road' option
This is my first GPS unit and it works great with features like big screen, easy navigation, points of interest, bluetooth utility, etc. I think it missed the basic thing, where it should promt us wheather to include/avoid toll roads. I saw this feature in all basic GPS units, but it seem to be missing in Nuvi 1490LMT. Hope they add this feature as part of any future map or software update.

OK NOT GREAT
Pros: simple point-to-point routing it works fairly well Cons: see comments
For simple navigation it generally works ok.
The multiple stop routing software isn't user friendly and does not work particularly well (not close to being efficient). It WILL take you on side roads when the freeway is by far the fastest route (even on the "fastest route" option. It's less than a year old and the thing doesn't have enough memory for it's first "lifetime map" update? Shame on Garmin.

EXPERIENCE WITH 1490 LMT AFTER 1 YEAR
Pros: lifetime map update &traffic advisor, junction view Cons: lifetime mapupdate process seem to take forever
Excellent value for the money + 10 out of 10
However, I am missing the serial output. I have a very specialized need / use to extract GPS data for location tracking purposes
When not navigating - it only display the street name you are driving along. Earlier version of StreetPilot displays the approaching cross-road as you drive along. Very helpful during night driving or Winter time when nights are longer than daylight

EXCELLENT GPS AND SUPERB VENDOR GPSCITY
Pros: display, bluetooth support, free traffic & maps. Cons: free tim horton's coffee for a year would be nice
Very pleased with the product (Garmin 1490LMT) and the vendor (GPS City). It has exceeded my expectations in every respect. Great traffic reports, excellent display, easy Bluetooth connection for my Blackberry. GPSCity was a pleasure to deal with and the delivery was prompt and inexpensive. The map updating was easy and free. I did add a micro SD to enable larger map updating and tons of POI data. Many of the complaints I seen in user reviews are unreasonable in my opinion considering the price and technology. I also purchased the EcoRoute HD product a week later for my wife's 2003 PT Cruiser and it works great and was a breeze to install.

Pros: large 5
Larger screen (5") on this GPS unit makes the visual route easier to see, compared to previously owned GPS units. I also like the ability to save a destination as a favorite without the necessity to retype the address and information via older models.
Free lifetime maps and traffic is a bonus, but seems to take forever to download.

Pros: map quality is excellent. Cons: doesn't always provide the shortest route.
This is my first GPS and I'm reasonably satisfied with its performance so far. However,I live in a rural area and I've noticed that frequently the GPS directions ignore the more obvious and shorter country roads as opposed to taking the longer route via a larger regional or provincial road. Unquestionably you need to supplement the GPS with the knowledge of roughly how you want to get to your destination and a map.

EXCELLENT
Pros: excellent device, great value. Cons: none
I bought this GPS for a trip to the UK with a UK card. It was indispensable. It found every single place we needed to get to (including some "out of the way" places). It was excellent warning us of approaching turns, roundabouts, speed limit changes, etc. and only lost the signal once over two weeks. It was also great at locating places of interest, restaurants and alternative routes. I thought it worked much better than the systems built into our cars.

DISAPPIONTED
Pros: larger screen Cons: all of above
The 1490 screen is too cluttered with points of interest. You can hardly follow your route with all the icons blocking your route. The green header on top shows the avenue you are travelling on. My old 760 and 320 showed side streets. R R crossings are not shown either. If it wasn't for my 760 battery dying, I would prefer it over the new 1490.
[Ed. note: You can reduce what you see on the screen by using the Tools menu. Tools ->Settings ->Map->Map Detail
You may want to look at the nuvi 3490 to get similar features to the nuvi 760]

Pros: price. accuracy. details Cons: sometimes takes us down an unwanted route.
Works as expected or better. Knowing the area well, it does make some mistakes such as turning down a yet to be completed road (distant future). Sometimes it suggests gravel roads when a paved road is nearby but that may be my settings mistake. Good detail in maps such as streams and newly added roundabouts etc. Maps updated easily.

VERY PLEASED.
Pros: easy to use. excellent maps and graphics. Cons: i have found none so far.
This is the first automotive GPS I have owned. When I first connected to the web site I was informed newer maps were available. The download process was very straightforward. Since then I have been notified of two software updates and they were accomplished without a hitch. I have not yet taken any long trips with the Nuvi 1490 but I have checked it extensively around town. I have found it very easy to set up and use. When travelling to a specified, known, destination it has always met the criteria I set up (shortest route) but not necessarily by the route I usually follow. When several choices are available this is quite understandable. If I ignore a turn instruction and follow my usuall route the Nuvi 1490 quickly re calculates. So far I am very happy with the unit and am looking forward to some longer trips in less familiar territory.

BIGGER DISPLAY, CRISPER GRAPHICS
Pros: bigger display, better looking layout Cons: power connection not on cradle
i moved into this gps from a nuvi765. i wanted the ecoroute hd module. i needed to upgrade the gps to be able to accept the data from the ecoroute hd module. all in all the gps is functionally the same as the nuvii765, except for the ecoroute features. the routing seems faster to calculate and the gps is quicker to respond to upcoming turns that are on top of each other. it also responds faster to mistake made while trying to follow a route. the bigger display only makes it easier for big fingers to press the on-screen buttons. each button is bigger. otherwise the 4.3" screen seems to show the same info. the newer software on this unit has a crisper look to the graphic elements. the placement of the on-screen info is better and easier to see. the disadvantage of this unit is in the power connection. the power connection is on the unit itself. not on the cradle. this makes it a bit harder to disconnect/reconnect from the car. plus when the unit is disconnected the power cable falls to the floor and you have get it each time you hook up again. not a deal breaker, but would be nice for power to be on the cradle.

VERY HELPFUL
Pros: traffic map lifetime updates Cons: would like the use the user guide on paper.
The traffic map proved very helpful on a recent trip. We were stuck in traffic on a major highway on the way to the airport and advised to take the next exit by the flag man. If we would of taken his advise, it would of taken us a lot of time to back track to get to the airport. The Germin was showing the traffic tie up ending around the next corner and it was right. The Germin saved us a lot of frustration because we trusted it and stayed on the highway. I haven,t tried put the Bluetooth yet.

GOOD UNIT WITH GLITCHES
Pros: reliable unit with good features, but not perfect. Cons: synthetic voice for street names annoying
The 1490 performs well and even steered my son around a big accident. He figures he saved half an hour. He was thrilled, He tried out the bluetooth on the same trip and the sound quality on our end was good, and he could obviously hear us well enough. He mentioned that it was really easy to use, too. It was a Christmas present. We tried it out on a trip to Banff at Christmas. We were headed north on Hwy 22 west of Calgary. The unit directed us to go east into Calgary at Hwy #1 then turn around and head west again. Knowing this was ridiculous we all just laughed. It wasn't unexpected, my old Garmin Street Pilot has glitches too. It can be infuriating if you don't know the area. The synthetic voice that gives out street names is annoying and he just turned it off. Overall the unit works well, though.

Overall I am pleased with this product. The screen is ample, and fits well on the dash in my Honda Fit. The main downside is that it can be a little slow when searching for POIs and moving between screens. GOOD FEATURES
Pros: good value with the map updates Cons: routing errors
I like the eco features in this GPS. I find the routing is sometimes not what I know to be the best route. I live in the country and several times the GPS has tried to take routes on what I know to be ATV trails or logging roads. I will be using it to pull an RV and this could be dangerous. I'll be watching maps to be sure.

Very, very, very poor voice instructions. I don't know what language you use, but it certainly is not English! I live in the prov. of Quebec, Canada and I can't understand the voice instructions. I have owned a Garmin for several hrs. and decided to upgrade to a 1490T-what a mistake! I will be returning it for a Garmin-hoping it can speak English. You really need to address this problem.

1490 LMT
Pros: nice to have lifetime maps and traffic. Cons: slow processing time.
Bought it in Aug 2011 for $190 for a very long road trip planned . I am a fan of Garmin, used them for over 15 years now. The 1490 I found slow in recalculating legs as well as refreshing map screens. The unit rebooted itself 4 or 5 times without warning on the trip.
I will bring the unit back and pre order the 2595 unit.

during my trip from ny to ca the text at the top froze up on detours. the speed froze up at the same time. this happened in cleveland, toledo, near portage ind. and at rest stops in wyoming and nevada. had to stop and reprogam it. if i shut it off at stops. i had to reprogram it. selecting type of route is too time consuming. both of my magellens are old but easier to use.

NEW 1490
Pros: big screen Cons: shuts down, strange routes, poor blue tooth
We purchased this unit because of the big screen, great. I have not yet updated the unit and maybe that will help with the few problems we are having with this GPS. It has shut off on me a couple of times, it has taken us on an obvious wrong route, lucky for us we spotted it right away the one time the next time it was not so obvious and we ended up in an area that we did not want to be in and had some difficulty getting our motorhome out of there. I hope that the updates will help or this could be a real annoying GPS. Our old Nuvi 250W stll works and we may need to go back to it.

WORST MODEL OF 4 GARMINS I HAVE OWNED.
Pros: keeps a nice record of fuel use. Cons: too many to list.
Poor map. Has little detail. Misses towns, highway numbers.Large screen but hugh icons in corners reduces useable area. Processor too slow to keep up with Interstate highway intersections, particularly when the highway splits twice in short distance. Voice command to turn is either too early or too late. Last decent garmin was iQue 3600. The 1490 will be my last. The Nav in my VW I'm told is Garmin as well. It's also poor.

NUVI VERSUS MAGELLAN
Pros: quick navagation Cons: none so far
I originally had an odler Garmin, but after it quit, I purchased a Magellan RodMate at a wholesale club, since they were offering a good discount and lower price then the Garmins. BAD decission! It was diffficult to navigate through menus, but I need to be objective probably because I was used to the Garmin, but reaction time to the Magellan was VERY poor. If you missed a turn the unit would actually not respond for an extended period of time and recalculation was horrible. If you want a GPS spend the money on a Garmin. I am absolutely happy with my Nuvi 1490 LMT. Would highly recommend it.

GARMIN NUVI 1490 LMT
Pros: 5 Cons: no on screen scale
This was one of the best purchases I ever made. This is my third GPS, and it's the best. I am impressed at the big, easy to read screen, that it gives 'smart' directions, it shows turns and lanes well ahead of time so you can be in the proper lane, it shows the speed limit for most highways, the included automatic traffic warnings when near large cities, and it's ease of use. The free lifetime map upgrades is a plus too. It took a while, but the upgrading map feature worked fine. I wish it had an onscreen distance scale.
We use my wife's car for traveling, and she has an installed OEM GPS in her car. I dash mount the Garmin, and use its information rather than the unit in her car. I use hers for looking ahead distances, as it has a distance legend.
It has bluetooth too, but I haven't used that feature.
Well worth the cost.

DISAPPOINTING
Pros: large screen. Cons: severely reduced junction views when updating maps
Out of the box the unit works fine but once you try to use the Lifetime maps Update Garmin inform you that the unit does not have enough memory for a full map install. They also reduce the size of the file that contains the Junction views leaving this feature very much curtailed. If you can avoid using the map update feature, do so, otherwise be prepared to loose a lot of features that come with the unit when it is new.

WELL WORTH IT!!!
Pros: ease of use, durable and portable. Cons: can't think of any yet
My first time using a GPS and very pleased at how easy the Garmin is to operate. It took me exactly where I wanted to go and allowed me to concentrate on driving. I also want to mention that I dropped the unit several times while taking it in and out of the car and was worried I damaged the unit. No problem, the Garmin seems to be very rugged and durable as well. Buy yourself one and ease your travel worries...and make sure to buy it from gpscity, their prices are the best. Thanks!!

VERY DISAPPOINTED, TOM TOM IS MUCH BETTER
Pros: large screen, slim design, windshield mount Cons: bluetooth, voice directions, map update
I switched from an old Tom Tom to the Garmin. I have been very disappointed with the unit.
Half the time the voice directions do not work (no voice is heard). One of the major reasons I selected this model was for the BlueTooth connection to my telephone. Driving without using a handsfree device is illegal where I live. Most of the time the BlueTooth doesn't work properly. It doesn't store your phone book on the unit, it is designed to downloads each time you connect, but this rarely actually works. To download the phone book, I have to delete my phone from the unit and re-pair the unit every time. Very frustrating.
Mine came with lifetime maps. When I tried to update the maps, it said I didn't have enough memory to download all the maps in U.S. & Canada, so I had to leave off Canada. It was originally loaded with U.S. & Canada, so I don't know why it couldn't handle the update maps covering the same areas.
I bought mine from the GPS Store. Less than 2 months after I bought it, I get an email from the GPS Store offering the same unit for $80 less than I paid. Very annoying.
Tom Tom is the way to go.

LOW ACCURACY
Like it in General. Better sound, better organized home page. Turn Notice in advance is a good idea (often missed my turnes before). Upgraded software works faster then my in previous 765T but accuracy is very low. Took me 100m from the location in different parts of the city. My 6 years old Magellan brought me right to the place. Will not return it as the 765 did the same mistakes. Some general Garmin problem with accuracy.

DEPEND ON GARMIN
Pros: screen size, features, extras available Cons: can't shrink tabs from the main map screen
This is the fifth Garmin that I have purchased over the last Thirteen years. I have never been unhappy with the brand and this one is so much more than just a GPS. I purchased the optional EcoRouteHD and I can monitor the operation of my engine right on the GPS. The screen is bigger than my previous units but the visible map is smaller due to the information tabs that are ever-present. This unit has the map and traffic updates for life (who's life wasn't mentioned) and that is a great feature. The software from Garmin allows me to use my own voice for the route commands and I can play with the wording, not necessary but a lot of fun.

GREATLY DISAPPOINTED
Pros: screen size and clarity Cons: inaccurate too often!
Having owned a Garmin previously I couldn't wait to take this on my first major trip. My excitement soon faded when I discovered it was inaccurate many times during the 10 day trip, took me on routes that seemed illogical, and most annoyingly, gave directions too soon. This could just be a defective unit since I also had trouble locating satellites in many locations.

VERY DISAPPOINTING
Pros: it shows your speed based on gps. Cons: not very good at what it is supposed to do.
The routes chosen by this unit when a destination is entered are bizarre and are seldom the way I would choose. The software for the Mac to use route planning is a sick joke. It is just terrible and is functionally unusable.
I don't know what other options are available out there, but I definitely would not purchase this thing again. If this is the best that Garmin can do, stay away from the whole company.
I rated this item one star because there is no option for a zero. I rate it two thumbs down. Don't waste your money on this.
[Ed. note: Users need to ensure they select the proper route preference in the settings for the unit.]

EXCELLENT GPS
Pros: large screen, easy to use interface
After considerable research, I decided to buy the Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT. I am most pleased with the experience of buying through GPS city who had the best price. The 5 inch display is excellent as well as the easy to use Garmin interface. At this time I have not used the bluetooth feature or traffic assist. My unit arrived early and initial setup was very easy. The unit is fast to acquire a signal or recalculate a route. The lifetime maps was a feature I wanted, it's a 2 hour process to update the maps, from registering the product, installing the communicator plug-in on my iMac, then installing the map update software, then downloading the map. The North America map 2012.10 took 90 minutes as the file size is 1,323 MB. Overall, I'm very pleased with the 1490. On 2 occasions, the speed indicator in the bottom right corner has frozen, refreshing the map display cleared the problem and I downloaded an additional software update today. I spent hours researching the best unit for my needs and where to buy, and would recommend the 1490LMT and GPSCity

WORKED GREAT!!
Pros: worked great! shows restaurants, gas stations near! Cons: sometimes car showed driving alongside of road!
This was my first GPS purchased and worked well. We drove to Southern California and it worked extremely well. It did guide around traffic snarls. However, maybe due to my newness, found it awkard to know where it was taking us!! I know one time it told us to take an off ramp which I did on a right lane and then told me within about 200 feet to make a left turn (4 lanes over!) which was full of cars! Nonetheless, it recalculated a route and ultimately we got to our final destination. Don't know how much time I actually saved in getting around the traffic snarl on the main route! When I consider recalculating routes and not knowing how and where it was leading me! Also one time on an interstate it told me to turn off it between Anaheim, CA and Las Vegas, NV. Does not give you the reason why. I turned off and then it told me to turn back on. So I lost some time there. Not sure if there is some built in advertising which forced me to go off the main road or exactly what happened. Maybe someone paid Garmin to slip that little off road excursion in to maybe get me to buy something. Overall, very very happy with product!

LIKED IT AT FIRST, HATE IT NOW THAT I'M USING IT
Pros: low price. large bright screen. lifetime updates. Cons: slow processor, unreliable.
To test it out, I've been using it on known locations in my city. Sometimes it gets "confused" and takes me in circles. For example, there is a highschool off a main road. To get there requires a left turn. The unit tells you to make a right turn and keeps taking you around the block. When searching the POI's - for which major venues are often missing - it can take twenty minutes watching that hourglass flip around. On the bright side, the unit was a great deal on sale. Just not not as great as I expected. Screen is bright and easy to read. But next time I buy a GPS I will not "Follow the Leader".

SOME GLITCHES
Pros: nice compact unit with a good sized screen. Cons: don't like the detours.
There is a software glitch. When tracking to a destination, the unit will take you off of the main road, down a few side streets and bring you back to the same point on the main road where it first had you turn. The unit is easy to use but is frustrating when it wants to take you on a route which is not on your way.
The battery in my unit no longer holds a charge. This was my third Garmin, am now looking at a TomTom.

Pros: was a great buy on black friday & is very nice un Cons: can't find my home, i wonder how many more times t
Nice large , easy to see screen, recalculates quickly. My major complaint is with the mapping. It is a good thing that I know where I live ( ha ha ) because I would never find my home using this GPS & therefore neither would anyone else. The condo complex where I live has been here for 6 years, yet according to the map, the road I live on doesn't exist!!. And yes I updated the unit before I even used it. Poor pronunciation of roads in some cases. Example: Crowchild Trail is pronounced Krawchild: Peigan Trail is pronounced Peegan then 30 seconds later Piegan.I would give it a 5 except for the above reasons.

NUVI 1490LMT
Pros: great features & price Cons: none so far
Purchased this unit for my wife to drive back and fourth from Grimsby to Toronto, updated the maps right away, did not take that long to do, I am already set up with Garmin for another unit so It was easy to add this one to my account. Traffic alerts work great, it has gotten her out of allot of jams so far, re calculating from a missed turn seems to be faster then my Nuvi660. bigger screen is a plus. over all a great unit. All GPS units should come with LMT.

GREAT BUY
Pros: lots of information on the screen Cons: difficult to pre route
Purchased this Garmin before a trip to Europe. Found the screen easy to navigate, much more on screen information than our previous Garmin. Even tells you what lane to be in on a mulit lane Interstate. The FM traffic advisories were very useful and simple to understand the alternate routing. Very little error in distance to stops, maybe 20 to 50 feet, which is a lot better than out older Garmin. The only negative was the self routing was a little slow and difficult to move through. I’m sure I will speed up once I’ve done a couple routes. Took a little over an hour to do the map update running on a DSL internet line. But map updates are worth the wait. All in all a great GPS for the price.

Pros: screen clarity, fast startup, bluetooth Cons: none sofar
I geocache with an Oregon, but find it a bit slow when I use it for street directions in a strange city. I’m quite often past the street before it prompts me to turn. I bought this to fix up that problem and it works great. The ability to add my own [red light cameras] POI’s is really great and the Bluetooth works flawlessly. It even loads my phones phonebook into it whenever they are Bluetooth connected.

Pros: enjoty iten
Waited approx 10 days for unit to be shipped because of tremondous Black Friday sales. When trying to update maps had lots of problems. Map would download, install, but couldn't unlock.Called Garmin 3 times and got service but still couldn't unlock. Technician sent email with instructions and on 4th attemp found file that had to be deleted, not in folder where it was supposed to be. Deleted file and everything has worked flawlessly since. Seems to be much more accurate than previos streetpilot 330 and gives lane turns. Having trouble with some lane changes, not Garmin problem, mine. Blue tooth works well. Used unit before updating in Quebec and voice was terrible, ok since updated.

DISAPPOINTMENT
Pros: nice size screen Cons: most of the features just didn't work
The unit work fine for the 1st hour, afterward it would freeze up, stop giving verbal instruction via the speaker. The blue tooth paired with my Nokia E71 phone but I was not able to answer call or get any notification of a incoming call, but it did allow me to make calls. The lane assist did not always work. It seem to work when it wanted to. The traffic alert was working some times and provided me incorrect information. It stated the road I was on was clear with green alert, but I was stuck in traffic for over a half hour. I was advise to go to the Garmin web site to get the latest firm software, which I did and to my disappointment it did not correct any of the problems I was having, if anything it may have created additional problems. Over all I had to return the unit for a refund. Note I have been a Garmin GPS user for a very long time,(since the street pilot III) and never have I had problems like I had with the Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT.

Pros: price, amazing features, lifetime traffic and maps Cons: absolutely none!
Lifetime traffic and map updates are more than worth the price of this unit alone. The GPS has a large easy to read screen and it appears to be greatly updated from the GPS I bought just three years ago and paid $700 for! I also purchased the Ecoroute HD unit at a cost of $110. VERY DETAILED
Pros: detailed directions, bluetooth feature Cons: alt rte directions were not logical
I love that the 1490 names the streets that you are going to be turning on. Makes it much easier when there are two turns close together. Went to NC from NJ.Have made the trip several times and it kept trying to get us to take a different route, but "recalculated" fine. On the trip down it took us on a small snow coverved road to get gas! Not cool. On the way home, it suggested an alternate route to avoid traffic on I-95 that had many traffic lights and took 20 minutes longer. Still trying to figure that one out.
The screen is easy to see.
Love the Bluetooth feature, totally hands free.

WORKS WELL
I like the large screen and the convenient dash mounting option. I really like the hands free Bluetooth connection for my cell phone. Routing is fast and simple and he lane assist is a nice feature when traveling in metro areas with which I'm not familiar.
Entering a destination is easy and quick and using the computer and Mapsource software from Garmin it is easy to set up a number of waypoints for a longer trip. Having the built in battery is very convenient for taking the GPS into the house, restaurant or motel room to do some route planning.

REASONABLE GPS - LMT NEEDS WORK
Pros: touch screen is responsive - few typos Cons: "on my route" poi does not update as you drive
I just returned from a 6 day tour using the 1490LMT for navigation. This is a good GPS. There are areas Garmin needs to improve. The touchscreen is responsive - not like the 765. Calculating routes is fast enough. The screen is plenty bright during peak sun however, it is too bright during night driving - a light sensor to enable auto brightness is needed. I took one phone call, and the other party did not complain about the voice quality (but how many of us complain?). I wish I could set two volume levels: navigation commands, phone calls. I would like to see a preference for the 'near' setting on finding Points of Interest. My preference would be 'on my current route', when there is a current route otherwise, 'near current position'. When you find POIs on your current route, the milage updates however the list does not. That is, the list does not drop items as you pass them or add items as you get closer to them. I'd like to see a POI for 'Rest Stops'. While my vehicle can go 400 miles between fuelings, my back and bladder cannot.
The LMT update would not let me install all of North America. After I selected the largest update that would fit, I ended up with nearly 400MB free. In 3 months, when I can get another update, I may be able to put all of North America on. I suspect the map update software does not handle a nearly full device well - next update will have a lot of free space. Be advised, it you want to update all of North America every quarter, you will likely have some headaches, until you figure out a magic sequence to get all the maps onto the device.
I'd like to pick the information to display, as I can on my hand held Garmin. For me, the direction of travel in not interesting as the vehicle has a compass display. I'd rather display elevation. The unit only gives you a choice of standard or detailed information. Detailed takes out about an inch on the right side of the display (think dock on MacOS or taskbar on Windows on the right of your screen).
Most of us are familiar with Googles directions. I have not found a way to view the calculated directions. This seems obvious, so I am probably missing something. While seeing the directions for your trip in list form is commonplace on mapping services we use on the Internet, it is either not possible with this unit or not obvious from Garmin's user interface.

EASY TO USE
Pros: easy read, intuitive, clear display, feature ladden Cons: nothing of consequence
We bought this unit specifically for a trip to Florida. It has worked out very well. The screen size is nice and big and easy to read. It does a quick job of calculating routes and is intuitive to use. I love the junction view feature that shows you visually what lane to get in so as not to miss your correct place/lane. My previous Garmin did not have this and we used it several times and it is very helpful. The junction view pops up automatically when confusing divides in the road come upon you. Sometimes it's not always clear which is your correct lane to be in and this feature really clarifies this well. The unit is "slim" and has a rubberized back tactile feel. Speaker is plenty loud. I've used the traffic feature more than I thought and it is better tan I expected it would be. A little circle turns from green to yellow or red depending on how much traffic there is. It displays the time expected delay ahead due to traffic. We have driven a heavily congested area of Orland several times and it is pretty accurate. It also puts a yellow or red strip along the side of the road on the display also indicating the severity of the traffic. Once, I was in heavy traffic on our side of the road but oncoming traffic was much lighter. The map correctly had a red strip on our side but a green strip on the other. You also have the option of changing the map view to see traffic ahead in severity (green, yellow, or red). This is an alternate map view that is referred to as a "traffic map" and you can toggle back and forth from normal to traffic map view (nice feature). I also used the "add way point" feature where you can add stops on the way to your final destination. I use the "econo" feature which scores your driving habits based on speed, braking, acceleration. It assigns points on each based on how well you manage these by the way you drive. You get a score for each that changes as you drive. Top score is 99 and it'll rate your driving habits each day so the benefit to you is as you get your numbers up, you get better fuel economy. It creates a challenge for you. Some may find it no big deal but for a long trip it was fun to reference and it did create for me the intended challenge.
All in all, I'm very pleased with the unit. A couple of small gripes (and they are small) is first, you occasionally get an ad for a nearby restaurant pop up. I guess if you find the offer attractive you touch the add and they direct you to the place to get your food deal. It goes away quickly so it's not a game changer and some may find it useful. Also (and this is just a personal dislike), the front bezel is shinny black. I see this on a lot of TV's sold today. I am at a loss how the industry thinks a reflective front bezel is ever attractive, but that's just me. I would have preferred a matt finish here. The GPS is got good features and is a pleasure to use. I research it a lot before buying and I do not regret buying this. I also purchased the wireless bluetooth module that connects to the on board computer (5 minute install). It sends real time data to the GPS giving you screens of engine data like actual RPM, air intake temp, fuel used and cost. It also reads error codes. This optional gadget in fantastic and I highly recommend you get both. Well worth the money if you drive a lot or are into car engines.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!
Pros: great speed, simplicity, bluetooth, lifetime maps. Cons: lifetime traffic subsidized by occasional ads.
For the money, nothing out there could touch this 5- incher!!!!! The Bluetooth syncs-up and works perfectly, and is soooo convenient when you find somewhere you want to go to, but don't feel like messing around with dialing the number on your cell phone. Just touch the phone number on the GPS touchscreen and your phone starts ringing through the GPS unit! So easy and always a great connection. Loud powerful speaker is also awesome! I've been using GPS units for about 5 years and bought this one for my daughter. At 17-1/2 years old in Colorado, it's still illegal for her to use a cell phone while driving, even with a Bluetooth headset. With this GPS unit, I can't imagine her ever getting pulled over since there's no obvious ear-piece to give her away! (I know, I know I’m encouraging an illegal act here... but at least it's safer than holding the headset to her ear or dialing ten-digit numbers!) Also love that all of your phone's contacts are downloaded onto the GPS so you can use one touch dialing straight from the GPS touchscreen. Incoming calls are also convenient. As for the GPS as a navigating tool, I pretty much played around with all the popular units out there right now and really appreciated this one the most. Unless you spend around $500, there’s always going to be a compromise you have to deal with! This one had the best balance of compromises for the buck. If I didn’t value the Bluetooth as much as I did, I probably would have just gotten her the Tom Tom XXL550 with lifetime maps and lifetime traffic. But for a little more, I can have the peace of mind knowing that my daughter is just a little bit safer.

GREAT VALUE FOR THE MONEY!
Pros: acquires satellite quickly, detailed fuel/trip data Cons: outdated maps, slow/inaccurate search function
I bought the Nuvi 1490 LMT (LMT = free Lifetime Map & Traffic update) from www.gpscity.com. I did extensive research and discovered that they had the best price for this particular model. In fact, their price was about $100 lower than some online stores! I'm an avid online bargain shopper, so hats off to any online store that provides good deals and good service.
The shipping was amazingly quick. I placed my order the day after Thanksgiving Holiday (Friday), and my new unit was in my hands on Monday! By the way, I had chosen regular shipping. So, full points to www.gpscity.com for super fast shipping.
The unit itself is satisfactory for what I need it to do. I've noticed that all the major car GPS companies (i.e. Garmin, McGellan, TomTom, etc) have deliberately watered- down the features of newer models in comparison with older models. Older car GPS models had Bluetooth, MP3/Audio Book support, Handsfree Voice Command support, etc. but many newer models lack that. Now, I understand that some of those features (like MP3 playback) are no longer needed in a GPS unit since newer car stereos do it all, but I feel that some of those features were deliberately taken out as a measure of "planned obsolesce" and in light of the fact that the car GPS market is facing an increasingly uphill battle since a lot of new cars have the option of a built-in GPS system.
The things I enjoyed about the Nuvi 1490 LMT are: quick satellite signal acquisition, clean and easy-to-understand menu system, ability to record your own (or your friend's) voice for GPS directions, free lifetime updates, portability, 5 inch screen, and price.
The things that I do not enjoy about the Nuvi 1490 LMT are: lack of some features that have appeared in past car GPS units (such as Voice Command, online connectivity, etc.), doesn't always calculate the quickest/shortest routes (route logic is a bit faulty), the most up-to-date map is NOT up to date, the manual point-of-interest search is extremely slow and often fails to produce results (this is my biggest irritation).
Overall, I'm glad to have this unit, but I'm not fooled by the fact that Garmin has deliberately left out some features and will continue to do so in order to charge higher premiums for more "higher-end" units and services.

GREAT GPS UNIT!
Pros: instant satalite requisition, lifetime map updates Cons: traffic warnings sometimes no longer valid
I've had this a month now and so far have had no problems with this product. I use it on my 22 mile commute to work and the traffic warning are fairly accurate. Got me out of a stop and go jam on a major freeway by taking me through the back roads during a nasty winter storm which, as far as I'm concerned, payed back the price that I paid for this unit.

GARMIN NUVI 1490 LMT
Pros: nice large display, and clear voice Cons: the maps associated to addresses is off
For routes and roads it works great however, for addresses it leaves a lot to be desired. I've written and spoken with Garmin about it. They have offered me an RMA but the unit appears to be fine it's the addresses associated to the maps that are out of whack. This causes it to allow you either pass or not quite reach your destination. The maps take a very long time to download and update.

GPS MEMORY LIMITATIONS
Pros: big screen, fast Cons: insufficient internal memory to store maps
Due to the current size of North American maps, and the low amount of RAM on the unit, you can no longer fit all of Canada and the US on the units memory without deleting other files on the unit. You will need to plan on buying a separate microSD card to use with it for additional storage.
Memory prices are cheap, you would think Garmin would plan to have sufficient onboard memory to handle its maps at least for a couple years of updates.
Disappointed.

MY 5TH NAVIGATOR
Pros: lifetime map updates, intuitive, can load custom poi Cons: no serious flaws.
I am very pleased with this unit. It is intuitive for searching. When you choose to find a favorite or other point of interest it will list them with the closest first. I appreciate that especially because I loaded the locations for the Tim Hortons in it. It had a mapping issue once, I guess the map info didn't get updated. I have had many of these units, this is the best one so far. I wasn't pleased with the two maggelans I own, the Tom Tom was good, the lowrance was/is a challenge to use. These units are always improving, I would strongly recommend not buying a refurbished unit and looking for lifetime map updates which this one has.

GOD BUT NOT THE BEST
Enjoyed the larger display although much smaller than on my Street Pilot 7200.Miss the text to speech. Overall well satisfied. My main beef is that I paid $289.95 at the end of Nov. 2010 only to didscover a few days after delivery that its price had dropped by more than $100. Really felt ripped off by GPSCity.

VERY POOR TO VOICE FUNCTIONALITY
I just bought this GPS from GPS City. It gas a horrible Text to Voice that keeps chopping off street names. I had a very old nuvi that lead me to buying this one. This is going back - though I may have to pay re-stocking fees.
Poor product from Garmin

MY NEW NUVI 1490 LMT
Pros: good screen, very useful in strange area of cities Cons: map for pq hwy 5/105 north of gatineau is poor!
This unit has been relaively easy to set up. Before I used it, I had the maps updated thru my computer.I live in Ontario and when going into Quebec, the voice mispronounces the street names badly. Furthermore, when I asked it to navigate to a friends house, about 22 km. distance and out in the country, there was no way that I would have followed the directions as they were completely irrational. On the other hand, it took me to another well built up suburban area with which I am completely unfamiliar with great accuracy and got me out of their after dark. I still have not figured out why there is a receptacle for a micro SD storage card. The instruction that came with the unit in the box were meagre to say the least and I download from Garmin the full manual. Quebec hwy 5/105 between Gatineau an Low is not up-to-date and the changes ahve been in place for more than a year!

GARMIN 1490LMT POOR GPS
Pros: big screen, blue tooth feature and user friendly Cons: poor gps capability when compare to my streetpilot
The Garmin 1490LMT was a big disapointment. The first one stop working after a few days. The second one did not show me any of the side roads along highway 105 in Quebec when in the view map. It also failed to bring me to my cottage indicating arrival at my residence a kilometer short of my destination. I would not trust this unit in unknown territory.

EXCELLENT UNIT
Pros: complete unit Cons: none really
I have had numerous Garmins ( electronics junkie ) and I find this unit to be excellent. 5" screen is nice and I find it connects with the satellite quickly. I downloaded the new maps very easily but I must say I found the instructions for the traffic a little confusing. The traffic reports seem to work great as far as construction areas work and that is all I have run into so far. Overall a Great unit.

GREAT GPS
Cons: great response time
I had been cheap in the past and gone with the low end GPS's but they dont last long enough before you realise they are useless. After a lot of research in multiple sites I went with the 1490LMT from gpscity, they also matched the price of a competter so that was good. 2 days after getting this unit I did a road trip from Calgary to Vancouver and drove around Van a lot, I gotta say I loved this unit, the respons times are great, it catched signals very fast, and with the LMT model I get free map updates for the lietime. Over all great unit and I'm going to buy another one for my brother now.

GREAT AUTO GPS!
Pros: large screen, easy to use, lifetime maps Cons: can't find a case a gps of this size will fit in
The large screen makes it easy to glance at while driving. Easy to navigate through the screens. Easy to enter and store addresses. My bluetooth phone works great with it, allowing me hands free calling required in this state. No complaints.

THE BEST QUALITY AND FEATURES AT THE BEST PRICE!
Pros: bluetooth, slim design, lifetime map updates
Bluetooth works perfectly with my Nokia n82 cell phone. Very easy to setup and use.
FM traffic receiver is very good. Tested it Montreal, QC (We have a lot of traffic jam problems all day long, and highway and bridge closing during the night because of construction). Outstanding results! It saves a lot of time and gas.
Garmin software support is very good. Using "WebUpdater" tool, you can update your nüvi firmware very easily.
For the lifetime free map updates, you will need a fast internet connection because the maps are very large files. But the map update process is fully automatic. (However, my nüvi 1490 came already loaded with the 2011.10 map version)
All Garmin's software are very stable, easy to use, and up- to-date. (works perfectly on Windows 7 64 bits).
The large 5" screen is very clear (no problem with polarized sun glass). Nice interface. Packed with a lot of features and the ability to customize the information displayed on the map screen. Also, the screen refresh time is very fast.
Simply, one of the best GPS actually on the market at the best price.
