GREAT VALUE FOR BASIC FUNCTIONS

Pros: thin, bright screen
Cons: slightly poor sound but acceptable

Coming from a Nuvi 680, the 1390 is a great step up. Just missing the mp3 player. Have not used it for travelling. This will be the test. Can not beat the pricing from gpscity! The map updates make this an incredible deal on sale.

VERY GOOD GPS

I had a Lawrence GPS and the Nuvi 1390T is a lot better, very easy to use.

NUVI+ECOROUTE HD=GREAT MPG MONITOR

Pros: supports ecoroute hd
Cons: power connection as mentioned

This is the second Nuvi I've owned, the first was a 755T, which performed admirably. I moved on to the 1390T so that I could use the Ecoroute HD OBD II interface to monitor MPG and engine stats.

Both units work extremely well for road navigation. The voice prompts are useful. I bought the bundle with lifetime map updates and it came with the lifetime traffic reports hopefully I will keep it longer than a year!

The 755T had speech input, which is a relatively useless feature. It also has a mediocre MP3 player which I don't miss.

There are subtle improvements in the 1390T software such as auto-zoom in when you slow down and enter a town, so you get more map detail, then as you speed up and leave town it zooms back out. I think navigation through the menus is improved though there seem to be too many pages in the 1390T you have to hit the "back" button repeatedly to get back to the map screen.

There are a few small pauses and hiccups in the voice prompting of the 1390T, I am hoping they release a firmware update soon to fix this. It's a very minor annoyance, but it's there.

I am looking forward to using the traffic updates feature the next time I have to go to the Portland airport so far I have not driven any place with support for the traffic feature so I have no idea how well it works.

To get the support for the Ecoroute HD, I had to replace a 1 year old 755T with this 1390T. It would be great if Garmin would make firmware upgrades (not just bug fixes) available instead of rolling out completely new products every 6 months that obsolete the GPS you bought last year. I would be happy to pay for (significant) software updates.

In this particular case the Ecoroute and Nuvi communicate by bluetooth, which the 755T does not have, but still, I have no expectation that they will do anything significant to improve the 1390T. It's not the Garmin business model.

The 1390T has a mini-USB connector for its power connection and you have to manually plug and unplug it and then dangle the power cord somewhere when it's unplugged. The 755T power is to the mounting bracket and you just pop it in and out. This and a few other tiny changes (for example there is no battery door on the 1390T, the case is sealed) make me think they did this to cut manufacturing costs.

Overall I am very pleased with the 1390T/Ecoroute HD combination and I'd recommend it to anyone obsessed as I am with measuring MPG.
