GARMIN PET TRACKER GTU10

Pros: maps great, very accurate
Cons: too large, short battery life, does not roam

Overall this is a great product and well made, solid construction, no issues with getting it to work at all. My only issues are the battery (you pretty much need to charge it nightly if set up for on-demand usage which is what I use). This is also an issue if your dog does go missing cause you can only track it for part of the day before the battery wears out. Keep in mind that the gps loses it's signal when your dog is indoors which makes sense but getting a message each time is frustrating. I think there is a setting that you can change to not get these messages, though. The unit is quite large by the time you get it into the pouch that you have to use in order to attach it to your dogs collar. And it's heavy, can't imagine a small dog wearing one. I have a large breed and it is cumbersome and she keeps itching at it cause she can really feel it on her. Also, if you don't use the on demand setting which uses so much battery life and instead go to 5 minute intervals, it means that you don't get a message about your dog leaving a zone until 5 minutes goes by...a long time when your dog is on the run...and any map location of your dog is a 2 minute delay so not real time. One more thing, we travel to the states all the time with our dog and it's useless out of Canada. You actually have to buy a second one for the states coverage!

GARMIN GTU10 TRACKER

Pros: accurate and rapid position when manual polling
Cons: tracking history somewhat effective.

device does the job. via PC, you can poll the device, giving you its current position (precisely) withing 2 minutes in the form of a dot on map as well as GPS Coordinates and speed. on the other end, the history that the device allows you to review, if not seated in from of your PC is not systematic, according to the delay preset. as an example, you will not receive position of the device every 5 minutes as set, you will rather receive positions 10m, 45m even an hours or more between them. but like i said requesting a manual polling give you accurate position in real time. battery autonomy is reasonable (4 days on 15min preset transmission) which is good. (I have to say that by setting SLEEPING areas on your PC Garmin Map, when the device enter such areas, it goes to sleep, saving battery live, when leaving the area, it comes back to live, and in both cases, it will give its last position before doing so) This unit has one of the cheapest yearly plan ($49.99) can`t beat that (my main reason for this purshased) others ask you for plan that goes around $30 a month. (notice that the device uses the Rogers Cellular Network to report its position to you, so take their covering range into consideration. So to conclude, the device does the job it is asked to do nothing more, nothing less, that is ok for me.

GARMIN GTU 10 FOR CANADA

Pros: retrieves wandering dog esp with mobile phone app.
Cons: case holder, buggy software and 2 min track delay.

Pretty amazing to be able to surprise and retrieve my wandering dog by waiting for him a mile down the road regardless of what direction he chooses to go on any given day.

Would prefer slots for direct attachment to the dog collar rather than slipping the GTU 10 into an inconvenient case. I will be surprised if the case stands the test of time being opened daily to activate or charge the tracker unit.

I would like to see real time continuous tracking in future models. Waiting two minutes for an update can let my dog get another half kilometer away!

Phone and PC Software is buggy, often locks up requiring restart.

For a compact unit this seems to be state of the art for now. I also use a remote beeper (Tritronics) to recall my dog if he is still in "line of sight" (FM signal).

GTU 10 REVIEW

It works only in direct up words clear sky view & the battery dies out before 12 hours ! The overall experience is great if you want jamesbond survalience or whatever available to consumer & I like the updates to websites even though battery is dead - one keeps getting battery recharge status on email. This is 21 st century & technology out here available is better than retail version.

GARMIN GTU TRACKER - WORKS WELL

This unit works as advertised. Very impressive. It is used in a marine tracking application with the Deluxe tracking package which is required if you want to see your track history. Without the Deluxe package you can only do individual position "locates" from the Garmin website. The unit will continue to collect position data even without a connection to the cell phone data network and report the positions later when connection is achieved. Suggested improvements: While the unit is said to be waterproof, the 12 volt power accessory cable connector is not waterproof for a continuous power-up application in an outdoor environment need more mounting options for the unit: the supplied case seems made to attach to a dog collar only, and the velcro adhesive option is simply not sturdy enough the website should have the capability to report position on a pre-scheduled basis to an email address. Right now the website can only email GTU10 status (powered off and battery condition) and entry and exit from a geofence (but without position coordinates). Position can only be viewed from inside the website.
