BIG IMPROVEMENT OVER GPSMAP 76
Pros: receiver accuracy, paperless geocaching, routing
I previously had a GPSMap 76 until it recently was crushed while kayaking on the ocean. I purchased the GPSMap 78 as a replacement partly because the consistency in the style meant it would be familiar to use. I also expected that there would be consistency in the functions and menus, but that has not really been the case.
The newer unit has so many improvements over the older model that there's hardly any comparison other than outward layout. It's been easy to learn though. I have used this GPS a lot for the month that I've had it - biking, driving, and walking. I've not yet used it paddling, but that is one of the major reasons that I purchased this one. Now that I've tried it this way, the paperless geocaching feature is a "must have" for me - I've grown to love it in the last month. Battery life has been good, I'm sure it's been on longer than the reported 20 hours.
I use the CanTopo maps and with my old unit I had to pick and choose which 15 to 20 maps to upload. With the GPSMap 78 I now have all of western Canada loaded and I've hardly dented the storage - awesome!
I really like the accuracy of the receiver, the paperless geocaching, the ease of use, the memory and the automatic routing. I look forward to getting A LOT more use out of this unit.

GREAT OUTDOOR GPS FOR HIKING AND BOATING
Pros: color makes it easy to read. Cons: the shallows aren't a different color on the map.
Bought this GPS as a multipurpose tool and added the Canada Marine Map to it. I have used it hiking and fishing. It is very user friendly and does everything I need a GPS to do. If you don't actually need a 3D compass or to know the Air Pressure this is the GPS for you.

GREAT SERVICE AND AWESOME GPS
Pros: sat images, memory(tracks and routes and maps) Cons: absolutely nothing
Thanks GPS city for the price match. Fast shipping. Excellent GPS! This GPS is exactly what I needed and wanted. Take all your options and squeeze it into one unit and you have the GPSMAP 78. I am glad I waited and not settled for the GPSMAP 76csx. If you already have map sets and do not need the altimeter or electronic compass, this is the unit you want! Satelite images on this unit look great. Bird's Eye view is not worth the money if you want to make your own custom maps(SAT images) Loads of memory.
