MY FIRST GPS DEVICE
Pros: very accurate - easy to learn Cons: the battery charge indicator isn't spot on
OK - there is gps on my Nokia phone, but it doesn't hold a candle to the GPSMAP 76CSx. The only complaint I have is that the battery charge indicator doesn't work properly, no matter what type of batteries I use and what battery setting is chosen. But that's a minor complaint. The learning curve isn't bad, but still I found that practice, practice, practice is the only way to learn how much this device can do. My friends with more expensive devices are impressed with it's accuracy. I also like the fact that the device is big, a plus for me since I have large hands and big fingers, and don't do well with touch- screen devices.

PERFORMS AS ADVERTIZED
Pros: unit works great and was quality manufactured Cons: the instructions does'nt explain things very well
I've had no problems with the 76CSx. After reading other reviews I was almost scared off by the 'few' bad experiences some buyer had had. I have had NO PROBLEMS with this unit. I am a fairly new GPS user (I've had a NUVI in the truck for 2 years) and so far have enjoyed my hikes with the unit. Still learning the various features. I have struggled with the printed manual. Thank heaven's for the advice of coworkers who have used GPS for a number of years. They were a big help. The instruction manual needs to explain features thoughly.

GPS FOR PARAGLIDING
I wanted this GPS for paragliding and any one who hang glides or paraglides knows the pros and cons of this GPS so I'm not going to write too much about it's features - it's one of the more popular GPS's for the sport and I'm quite happy with it. I'm based in the UK and the delivery was fairly quick - less than 2 weeks from ordering. For others from the uk ordering one of these there is about a £25VAT charge and an £8 handling charge from parcel force at the other end that you need to allow for.

GREAT FOR ON THE WATER
Pros: good, fast satellite aqusition. floats. Cons: a bit bulky.
This is an upgrade from my eTrex Vista that I bought in 2002. The 76 is much faster at acquiring satellites and has a bigger screen. The colour screen is easier to see. The menus are easy to follow. I use it for kayaking and the floating feature is a big plus for me. Also use it snowmobiling and in my fishing boat. All in all a proven performer.

SO FAR, SO GOOD
Pros: durable, hard wire, use 2 batteries, good mounting Cons: can't rotate display.
Switched from a Garmin III+ that I have used for over 7 years. Primarily used for off-road navigation on a motorcycle. Made the switch as many promoters will provide an upload of a route for the newer units but not the old serial ports. Super fast pick up of sattelites and orientation.
They definitely upload and download much, much quicker. All the features I was used to were available on the new unit and a few more that I look forward to trying. Seems to be durable and like that it uses only two batteries instead of four (less arc'ing under vibration so longer battery life). It also uses the same hardwire 12v plug as my old unit and doesn't seem to need a remote antenna as much as the III+ did.
Haven't tried a lot of uploads but did load several routes up to GPS easily. Also downloaded tracks from GPS to a couple of different maps and both worked well.
My only negative is that you can't change the orientation of the display screen to allow mounting unit sideways or even backwards to minimize the exposure to damage fromm rocks, tree limbs, etc.

GOOD HARDWARE, LOUSY SOFTWARE
Pros: finds lots of satellites, great at tracking Cons: software is confusing and useless
The gps unit does what it says it will do, find satellites. Even in my apartment it can still poke out one or two. The software and user interface is crap! Even with Basecamp & TOPO Canada, being able to upload, download, or even organize routes, tracks, and waypoints is next to impossible. Especially for first time owner. I've wanted to test it's ability to fly out the window more often than it's floating ability.

EVERYTHING I NEED
Pros: reception, floats, price Cons: size, although this is a minor issue
I've had a 76CS for years, using it for hiking, climbing, cycling, canoeing, kayaking and for Search and Rescue tasks on Vancouver Island. Much of the search and rescue work is done in heavy cover in three dimensions, with good old west coast temperate rain forest canopy. Reception can be a challenge. Seeing newer models having so much better reception, I decided to upgrade, and given I had accessories for the 76 series (RAM mounts etc), I decided to stick with it. No regrets. Awesome reception pretty well everywhere, fast satelitte acquisition, good battery life, expected Garmin quality and at about 1/3 the price of my first 76CS!

EXCELLENT COMPANION FOR SAIL CHARTER IN THE BVIS
Pros: quick position fix. course pointer. waterproof. Cons: can't think of any.
Chartered out of Redhook in the USVIs and sailed up through the BVIs and back. Charter boat had very rudimentory nav equipment (dividers, chart and parallel rule) and no GPS. Packed this unit and relaxed during the charter. I entered all my waypoints before going to the BVIs as well as all the submerged rocks and reefs. This unit picks up satellites and establishes a position very quickly. used the course pointer to sail to our next waypoint or to point to submerged rocks or reefs we had to skirt around. Pointer would show direction and distance to the hazard so you could be sure you were away from it. Some of these submerged rocks are close to the surface and in places you would never expect. At least we didn't pile up on Blonde Rock and become another national park diving destination.

RETURN POLICY
I received a faulty 76mapcsx. It would lock up and the batteries had to be pulled out to restart. I reported this to GPS City representative. The response was I was responsible for return shipping. It was only after requesting to speak to a supervisor the shipping responsibility was accepted. If I was asking them to exchange an item for another I would have understood their policy but this was a faulty item. With shipping costs what they are today, the risk of not being able to return a faulty item would not make their prices competitive with retail stores. The result was they paid shipping and supplied a working unit but it took some pushing to get it done. 2+ for GPS City. 76mapcsx 5 Good unit

This is the third Garmin hand held I've owned. All were great. Each new one was an upgrade from the next. I expect this will be my last.
I was immediately impressed with the controls up front. Moving from page to page is a breeze. I like the bigger screen but still find the bigger size light to carry. Cons: could be more user friendly.
I can ask it to go to the same location 2 days in a row starting from the same location and will give a different route each day. Some of the route make no sense at all. One time it wanted me to travel 30KM north of my destination for no reason, telling me that is where the town was located. It was not even a mistake in regards to both towns having the same name because they were both totally different. Other times it is great for finding our remote job locations. If you have not used a gps before then understanding it could be difficult.

VERY GOOD GPS
Pros: high sensitivity receiver is excellent. Cons: waypoint accuracy (even averaged) is variable.
The best feature of this unit is the high sensitivity receiver. You virtually never lose satellites even under canopy cover. You can stick it in your pocket and forget it and it stays connected to multiple satellites giving you a very good track of where you have been. The only concern I have is that the accuracy of the waypoints I have recorded does not seem to be any better than my old Map 76 (or perhaps even less accurate) but, given that it does not lose satellites, I can record a waypoint at any time whereas the old 76 sometimes lost satellites and I could not record a waypoint at all.

BEST OUTDOOR GPS
Pros: easy reading, accurate
We have now purchased 2 GPSMAP 76CSx and are most pleased with them. Very precise instrument, fairly easy to understand and use - the children use them as well when we do geocaching. We use this instrument mostly for geocaching and it is very reliable on the road and off the road. We are extremely pleased with it.

Cons: maps the topo seems low quality
I used the find city option and said go to and took me right there even recaclulated when I detoured for construction. Much better signal than the gps76 that I had before - where I would lose the signal in heavy bush, this one has not lost it yet. Worked great in the boat, in the bush, in the car.

GOOD PRODUCT GARMIN SUCKS
Pros: easy to use. Cons: garmin map policy
I like the product. It does what you would expect. However, when purchasing Garmin products beware of their map policy. If you buy a map, for instance Europe NT, it can only be used on one device. You must register it and you cannnot transfer it to another device, ever.

This is leaps and bounds better than my old GPsMAP 76S. The mapping and routing along with the updated Topo maps makes this an incredible unit for any and all purposes. You can't get a better unit that go go in the boat, for a hike, in the car, on the bike or on the snowmobile.

GARMIN 76CSX
Pros: clear screen, ease of use Cons: no simple way to import waypoints from external so
Excellent GPS. Very easy to set up and use. Uploads of the Garmin topography coverages for Canada on a micro-SD card are a dream for navigating on this GPS unit in the north of Saskatchewan. The only issue I have had so far is that (as with all Garmin GPS units) there is no easy way to import waypoints from external sources such as Excel spreadsheets or CSV files. One can do this via various 3rd party conversions but it ought to be built in to Garmin's own software

Hi I am happy to give you my thoughts on my new GPS 76CSx, I use it on my boat ,it is hooked to my lap top to run a navigation program which is critical to navigate the west coast of BC. So far it has worked flawlessly. It locks on to the satellites very well, even inside my boat. So far I am very impressed!!

MOUNTAIN BIKE GPS
Pros: excellent reception Cons: flimsy handlebar mount
Purchased this GPSMAP 76CSx to replace my 5 year old GPSmap 76cs which I use mounted on my mountain bike on average 40km/week over rough trails in forested areas. Gone through 4 handlebar mounts and have bounced the unit off the ground several times and while the unit looks somewhat battered up the only problem is a broken contact in the battery compartment. New unit has much better reception in forests - after 400km have yet to lose signal unlike old unit.

MULTIPURPOSE GPS
Pros: waterproof, simple navigation Cons: screen size
I'ved just returned from a two week motorcycle camping trip to the east coast carrying a nuvi 680 and a GPSMAP76CSX. I loaded Metroguide onto the 76csx and was impressed with how often it served me well on the road. The 76csx screen is very sharp for my failing eyes and was great to document each days trips. if I had to settle on only one unit, I would go with the GPSMap76CSX. A well designed multipurpose unit.

FIRST HANDHELD GPS
Pros: easy to use time to first fix
I work in augmentation services for high-accuracy, industrial-grade GPS but have never owned a consumer-grade receiver. I narrowed my selection down to 2 similar Garmins both of which incorporate the SIRF engine I wanted. I placed my order with gpscity and it was fulfilled within 3 days. The Garmin 76CSX meets expectations in terms of functionality and performance, particularly under tree canopy and topographic conditions I experience. The service from gpscity including followup has been exemplary. The only shortcoming has been of my own making - I should have ordered a clear-windowed, field holster at the same time.

I believe this model has the same guts as a map 60 csx, at a big savings. It has a huge memory chip as well. Easy to use on the fly with gloves on, if you get the ram mount for your handlebars. 76CSX
Pros: small size, portability, signal Cons: micro sd marine maps are pricey $158
I had the pleasure of owning a 60CSX, it was amazing but I lost it in the water while sailing. This unit is identical in functionality and screen, except for the case(which looks better in person) and this one floats!! I don't understand the $100 price difference between the 60csx and the 76csx. Also, If you don't care about compass/altimeter, go for the 76CX, as $209 is amazing price. Great handheld unit for sailing! Gotta give some props to gpscity.ca for having the best price by far and delivering to me accross the country in less than 24 hours for 19 dollars!!

EXCELLENT ALL AROUND UNIT
Pros: all around superior unit for many different uses. Cons: mapsource software for the pc is very basic.
I started with the precursor to the 76CSx, the Garmin GPS72 which was a very basic but very solid unit. While shopping for an upgrade I kept coming back to the 76CSx because it had my whole "I wish it had" list from my GPS72 experience built in.
At this point I've used the 76CSx extensively for two years now for boating, geocaching, hiking, and driving. I even turned it on during a flight to Newfoundland just to see what I could see and it was really helpful to figure out where we were at any given moment.
It does everything I need it to do and especially for boating has opened up long trips that I wouldn't have tried using solely paper-based navigation.
It's internal compass allows me to quickly check whether my swing radius has changed while on anchor by keeping the breadcrumb trail oriented the right way. It needs to be horizontal for an accurate reading but once calibrated it held that calibration and was very accurate when tested against my boat's main Ritchie compass.
The screen is such that in bright outdoor light it actually becomes easier to see rather than fading into uselessness. And the backlight can be set to surprisingly low levels which is very useful when out on the water at night.
It's not a perfect unit for geocaching or hiking it tends to be a bit big and for driving and boating the screen can be a bit small but for one unit to satisfy all of these needs it's the perfect size.
The antenna sensitivity is probably the single most outstanding feature for me, it always finds the satellites.
If I lost this unit I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one exactly like it.

GOOD PRODUCT!
Pros: has a high sensitivity antenna and floats. Cons: has a bit less resolution than other units.
Bought a new 76 CSx to replace one that was lost- that alone is a good testimony to the fact that I like the unit. Good points: it has a high sensitivity antenna, accepts micro SD memory cards, has a good quality screen, and floats (big advantage!). Newer units have the same quality of receiver- but do have a somewhat higher resolution screen, and are a bit smaller and slightly lighter (but don't float!) however, these minor advantages come with a hefty additional price.

Bought a 76C in Apr/05, liked it. When time came for me to consider a new unit, I tried different ones out, used mostly on motorcycles, also wanted the ease of using it anywhere. Tried the Zumo 550 for a trip one weekend, and really didn't like it. None of the manufacturers have made a good motorcycle unit yet. Ended up getting a new 76Csx in Aug 07. It has worked flawless from day one, love the new antenna, never lose signal and the media card lets me run up and down the east coast without uploading maps. It has proven durable on my dual sport bike and responds quickly when running twisty roads on my VFR. It is easy to read and the trip computer is so highly programable for Iron Butt type events. Buttons are easier to use with gloves then alot of the touch screen ones. Mapping will always be an issue with Garmin products, they might not buy data as often as we like. And our Canadian government charges too much when they sell out-dated map data.It took our own (NB) province 3 years to put some of our 4-laner on their own tourist maps. The 76Csx does everything as well as I expected. no routing program will suit eveyones needs. It doesn't have bluetooth, pictures or mp3, but then I wanted a GPS not an ipod or a picture frame. Would I buy another, yes, unless garmin or someone made something that suits my needs better and as on this date Dec 08, don't see anything. Although the 60Csx may equal it.

Once again GPS City came through as expected. I purchased a Map 76CS a few years back and use it almost daily. From guiding me to a hotel in San Diego, CA., to my favorite fishing hole when I am in the boat. Easy to read and easy to operate are two of the things I like the most. I have been so impressed with the Map76CS, I purchased the 76CSx recently as I require a second unit. I'm a truck driver and a jeeper and this was my first GPS purchase. I also bought the street and topo mapping software. I bought a 2gig memory card as well. I like the handheld unit for it's portability. I like the buttons rather than a touch screen. I don't worry as much about the screen getting scratched. My eyes are not the youngest and I have no problem seeing the screen. It has made my driving to new places a dream. Martin ON Prior to 2008 |
This unit works very well and so far I'm pleased with it's performance. The screen is easy to read and after learning the key strokes it is easy to navigate the menus. The reciever is sensitive enough to pick up the GPS signals from within the basement of my house.
The only annoying aspect is the auto-routing software(this might have more to do with Garmin's software in general and not with this unit). When providing a route in a rural area it mapped roads that I knew were either dirt back roads or gravel covered roads. I wanted to take main paved roads only. No matter what settings I changed on the auto-router it would never pick the major high-ways. I ended up telling the unit I was driving a truck to minimize the amount of back roads it picked.
when I was in the city the auto-router worked well in finding a optimum route to my destination.
Over all happy with this GPS unit.

Ray Brown NC Prior to 2008 |
I had owned the 76S of this unit so the step up to color was a treat, however the "x" expansion of memory and the turn by turn autorouting makes this unit exceptional for someone like me who does travel a bit by car, fishes new freshwater areas, and fishes in inland saltwater.
I installed a 512 mb micro SD card and have a combination City Navigator, Topo, and Blue Charts mapset in this unit. I'm ready for all I do in one machine and if I decide to go out west the creation of a new map for another part of the country is easily done and the time to create a map using a card reader makes everything possible well under 10 minutes even with a full 512 mb chip.
The only complaint is with Navteq who makes the underlying map for City Navigator. There are numerous errors of towns in the NE part of NC. Not only on this map, but you see the same errors on Honda and Accura's navigation systems and like City Navigator both systems show the source of map work being from Ireland. Whatever errors they put into it originally are still there....it is very frustrating for someone like me who fishes and hunts in that area and a town is present and then the town renames itself (erroneously)as you zoom in.
Overall, I really love the unit, I just find it frustrating that City Navigator has these errors that the folks at Honda and Accura have been told about (and not corrected) for years. You would think that Garmin, Honda, and Accura would accept data that changes, but wouldn't accept maps where towns are named wrong or have long established state roads running through them on the map when in reality they aren't within three miles.
If they ever get these maps right this will be a sweet unit for multipurpose use. Bad maps take away from its inherent abilities.

I bought the 76CSx recently for hiking in the dense western forests and for marine use. I have not yet had a chance to try the latter, but I am very impressed with its performance in difficult terrain. On a recent hike with a friend who has a Map 60CS, he lost the satellites several times in the woods and canyons and I never did. At one point in a deep gulley with thick tree cover, I still had 9 satellites, while he had 2. So far I have no complaints but will comment more when I have had a chance to try it longer.
