SMOKIN' DEAL!

Pros: rugged, waterproof, good satelite reception
Cons: screen a little small

Super fast (and cheap!) shipping. Was even shipped with a 1 GB card in the unit (rather than the 128MB it's supposed to)! Was able to drop more maps than I need on the 4GB card with room to spare. Unit works flawlessly. Had it in the RAM mount on the snowmobile all day at -20C and no problems with batteries freezing.

OUTDOOR SPORTSMAN

Pros: large screen

Easy to use. Larger screen than most although it is a little smaller than my 76 back and white. Can get an aerial which is handy if walking through thick bush. Can easily down load on to map source to organize tracks or points for different activities.

GOOD

Pros: nil
Cons: nil

Starting working almost immediately out of the box and what impressed me the most was that it got a position fix while I was sat up in my basement which gave it very view of the sky, only through the window!!

BEST HAND HELD EVER MADE

I have owned this GPS for a number of years, and it is the best that I have ever used, fast, accurate and very easy to use.I use it with topographical maps and also with marine charts out in the boat, excellent GPS. I have used many other types of GPS but this is definitely the best ever made.

GARMIN 76CSX

Pros: ease of use / sensitivity
Cons: did not come with 12v power cord in box

Out of the box and fully operational in a mater of minutes. I have multiple mounts for this unit and it easily goes between my ATV, Motorcycle, Truck and now my Snowmobile off road or on it is extremly reliable and dependable. Transfers map data from PC to GPS using Mapsource software with no issues at all.

POOR SUPPORT FOR MAC

Cons: screen very small, poor support for mac

Garmin continues to have poor support for MAC users. I purchased this unit with the 2 gig SD card which is useless when using a MAC. When I called Garmin customer support I was told the only way to load maps is by purchasing a pre- loaded SD card with the map allready installed. The screen is very small for such a large unit.

GREAT ALL ROUND GPS UNIT

Pros: satellite receiver, sd card
Cons: would like option of voice directions for driving

My GPSMAP 76CSx has worked flawlessly over the past months. I have used it both for navigating in the back country and on the highways.I had a 76CS previously and find the CSx satellite receiver improved and the addition of and SD card slot a major improvement for loading maps. The lower cost is also an big plus.

THE 76CSX IS HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT

Cons: software loading problems poor functioning in cold

I regret this purchase and would not recomment this unit with so many others on the market to choose from. I have not been able to get the map/software to load/work properly on my computer. Furthermore the unit functions poorly in cold termperatures.

[Ed. note: Kevin: this is a bestselling unit! I recommend you contact Garmin Tech Support directly and see if you are doing something wrong or if there is something they can do to assist your problem!]

GOOD COORDINATES

Pros: great coordinates
Cons: not paperless- as far as i know

I find that this gives good coordinates even if it is in the bush, poor weather, or any other distractions. Reasonably simple to use for most wants...would be nice to have it paperless though.

GOOD OUTDOOR GPS BUT NO CANADIAN TIDES

Pros: good reception and screen
Cons: bulky and no canadian tide stations

Solid GPS unit. Good Reception. But I'm considering taking it back because one of the main reasons I bought this GPS was for the Tide tables. However, Garmin does not include any tide stations in canada in the newest units (like mine is). All of the included tide stations are for american stations only which are completely useless to me. I think that in the description of this unit, this exclusion of Canadian tide stations should be specified.

COMPLEX BUT COMPLETE

Pros: has everything you need in a handheld gps
Cons: takes time to learn all functions and options

Any time you try to be everything something suffers - the only thing that suffers in the GPSMAP 76CSx is how long it takes to learn the functions. This thing does everything except make the coffee and I love it. I use it for fishing, mushroom picking and city travel and it handles all with ease. Like the fact the batteries last a long time. Showed it to a few of my friends and they will also be updating to the 76CSx through "gpscity"

EXCELLENT GPS

Pros: quick to obtain satellites.
Cons: once in a while it locks up on me.

I bought a Garmin GPS Map76C the day they became available a number of years ago. It served me very well except for under heavy tree canopy. The 76CSx has solved that problem. I use it for hunting, fishing, geocaching, Search and Rescue, work, etc.

Once in a while it locks up on me and won't update its position. I haven't figured out what causes that and the only way to solve it is to turn the GPS off and then on again. I tried a hard re-boot but that didn't fix the problem. I wish it didn't do that but I can live with it now that I know what the problem is.

SECOND GARMIN

Pros: easy to use, and big screen.

First GPS was an Etrex, there is no comparison, in its ability to pick up satellites. Easy to use, if you understand the basics, you could almost stumble your through using it with out the manual. I have already recommended GPS City and the 76CSx to friends.

GIFT

I bought this item for a friend and he is totally satisfied with it. He especially likes the larger screen. Also the item is easy to use. His only problem is with the cradle that was ordered with it which does not exactly fit and he has to put a velcro strap around it so it doesn't bounce out on rough roads.

USEFUL UNIT

Pros: nice unit. fits well in a pocket when you are out.

Found the unit to be as described. Just like any other unit you have to set it up the way you like it. Nice thing is that is shipped in no time to Ontario. I bought the GPS plus different RAM mounts and the total was still cheaper then just buying the GPS here in Ontario.

SATISFIED

Pros: connects quickly to sats
Cons: not many cases availible

I used this GPS to set up a few Nav exercises for a reserve unit of the Canadian Forces. I was quite pleased with the unit once I had it set to read grids. It is not big like some reviews say, I found it a good size for hiking etc..

FIRST GPS

Great Unit. The instructional booklet made first time use a breeze. The unit came with 2 GB SD card. I did not use it because I ordered TOPO Canada - No. 8 "Ontario". The only difficulty I experienced was the insertion of the SD Card in the battery compartment. I noticed on someone else's review others have had similar difficulty. The supplied SD Card(s) are too big, however after much head scratching I noticed that there is a smaller "micro" SD chip that is inserted into the base of the larger SD card and after removing, it fits the slot in the battery compartment. This is the only problem I had as a first time user of a GPS. For personal reasons I required a copy of my invoice prior to the delivery of the unit. A telephone call to GPS City and a copy of the invoice was in my email box as soon as I logged-on great service. I also ordered a RAM mount & a protective case and I am completely satisfied.

GARMIN GPSMAP 76CSX

Excellent service, and top rate instrument. The 2GB microSD Memory card was a bit confusing, as it doesn't fit in the instrument, and a card that would seems more realistic.

[Ed. note: To insert the microSD card into the unit, simply remove the battery cover from the back and there is a slot for the microSD card. It'll fit snugly into that compartment. Thank you!]

GPSMAP 76CSX

My first step into the world of 3rd generation WAAS-enabled GPS's. I owned a Magellan 315 before, which I used for hunting and fishing, but found outranked and outclassed for geocaching. The 76CSX is an awesome machine for that latter purpose. 2m resolution is routine. Drawbacks: I would have put the screen at the top. Also, the rocker button squeeks in the 6 o'clock position. Would still recommend without hesitation, though.

This is a real world GPS. I use it to map a lost canoe trail MaliseetTrail.com and it has every option I need. The altimiter is good for profiling the portage route.

Spent alot of time before the decision to buy this unit evaluating the options available and then read "GPS For Dummies" after the purchase.

Performs very well in the field

GREAT

This is my 2nd Garmin GPS. The first was a 76CS which I purchased second hand. I got about a year out of it when it broke - minimum cost to repair was going to be $125, so I decided to purchase a newer model as I was very pleased with the 76CS. I however have not had enough time to fully try out my new 76csx unit, however i used it enough to know its a great machine lots of options and easy to use i will however reply to the review at a later date after i have had time to put it through its paces. PS: As i live in ns canada i would like to know were the closest repair depot for garmin is located as i had a unique progam on my old unit a fellow put on for me and i can now longer obtain that program, it was great as i do trail gpsing for a local atv club and mapping to register with the province, as well as gps instruction. I would greatly appreciate it if my old unit could be repaired and the program in it rescued. Thanks in advance.
