GPSMAP 62S

Pros: good signal acquisition, good battery life.
Cons: complex to use - not intuitive to figure out.

I've only had the unit out on one outing, but it seems to perform well. All my friends tell me it has great features - most of which I haven't figured out yet. Maybe after I have a chance to just sit down and go through the features, it will become easier. Battery life was good: I ran the unit on a fresh set of NiMH rechargeables from about 6 in the morning till nearly 10 at night without shutting it off, until the unit warned of low battery. I didn't have much success with a wireless transfer from another Garmin. An onboard instruction manual would be a great help, as the online version is not very practical if you are trying to figure something out in the field, away from your computer. The control buttons have a good feel and the unit seems pretty well built. Screen resolution is very good and so far the accuracy of the map information has been good. I look forward to trying it out geocaching this summer.

A GOOD CHOICE FOR GEOCACHING

Pros: can use with gloves on, easy to see in sunlight
Cons: line doesn't always point toward destination/cache

I use the 62S primarily for geocaching and some for outdoor activities like canoeing. I like the robust nature of the unit. The outside of the keys are wearing a bit from being in my pocket all the time. It's easy to figure out. I like the wireless transfer option. Most of my caching buddies just use their iPhones and next to that, the 62S is a bit cumbersome. Whatever...I guess that's the way technology goes. The one advantage is the 62S battery life is longer than an iPhone.

GREAT GPS AND VERY GOOD PRICE.

Pros: good accuracy, ease of use, paperless caching
Cons: no downloaded maps nor camera

I bought this unit on the Christmas sale and the price could't be beat. I have been using an Oregon 400T, but my heart has always been with a Garmin 60CSx. This is the best of both. Paperless caching and outstanding accuracy. I am learning how to push buttons again and like the screen size and ease of use. If I could do it again, I would get the maps and camera.

GOOD CAMPING UNIT

Pros: reception and accuracy
Cons: hangs up for a few seconds at times

Menus are easy to find once you have used it for a while. Accuracy and reception is great even in heavy underbrush. Routing and screen are ok for traveling but not great. Definately a great backwoods unit though. Can't wait to have it along on the next canoe trip!

IT'S GOOD BUT I MISS SOME OF THE 60CX FEATURES

Pros: great antennae, rugged, paperless
Cons: page>page>page>page>page

I especially miss having Mapsource on my laptop and being able to download the day's track and my found geocaches so I can review where I've been and in what order. I wish when a new model is created that the developers don't feel they have to 'pee on their hydrant' and make changes that require a new learning curve. Why can't they use the features of the 60Cx and then add the ability to read full gpx descriptions.

I'm forever trying to figure out how to get back to the geocache description, how to stop navigation, how to mark a record. But I'm slowly getting used to it.

I don't care for the compass it moves far more then the old 60Cx especially when nearing ground zero and I'm not thrilled with having to calibrate 3 ways. Usually the third direction (spinning forward) doesn't work until I calibrate 3 times.

Field notes - I don't bother. Takes too long to type anything worthwhile with the rocker pad. I was hoping I wouldn't have to rely so much on CacheSense but I find myself relying more then ever on CS especially for easier field note typing and a time stamp on each entry so I know the order I visited the caches. Now that CS has upgraded and integrated with GC I'm going to wish I stuck with the 60Cx and not spent $600 for this model.

The display is more vibrant, I like that, but it's slower to refresh then the 60Cx, you have to wait for each of the layers to refresh.

This is a complaint that applies to all Garmin products I have used: when I'm in a city and I'm looking for a road, why can't it default to the city I'm currently in and save me the step of having to type the city/town I'm in. The rocker pad is such a slow process and especially annoying when I have to correct a typo.

GREAT GPS

Pros: satellite reception, map availability, rugged
Cons: a little slow to program with buttons

Very good and can easily download and use various garmin maps. Easy to switch between maps and controls are quite intuitive after playing around with them for a bit. Took a few minutes to figure out how to use as a road gps, but it is easy to do. This is my first outdoor gps, so I have nothing to compare it to, but the reception is great and it can easily pick up satellites when it is in my pocket while riding a bike. Looking forward to using it on the open sea so I can actually know where I am...

GREAT GPS

Pros: great map detail, bright display, very accurate.
Cons: additional $$ required for satellite imagery.

Great 3D map detail and the application of satellite imagery makes the unit that much more useful. The display reads nicely even in daylight conditions. The unit acquires satellites quickly upon start-up. Both the GPS and electronic compass are very accurate and reliable. Despite the very detailed map graphics, the display regenerates rapidly while moving. Be warned, however, that you will have to subscribe to and pay for the Bird's Eye satellite imagery. Also, be careful inserting/extracting the micro SD card as it is quite delicate...I broke one on an earlier GPS model this way. I highly recommend this GPS for hikers, hunters, fishermen, field workers, etc.

GOOD, BUT NON-INTUITIVE

Pros: sturdy
Cons: too complicated interface, very expensive software

This seems to be a high quality unit, but I found the interface hard to use. Hard enough that I had to call tech support. I don't remember what the issues were, but they were all things I could do with the Delorme PN-60 without checking the manual. The techie also had to read and study his version of the manual and ask another techie. I have had 4 different garmin automotive/motorcycle gps's in the past and have liked them. However, the absolute deal breaker is Germain's piratical software update policy. Beware, you will spend far more on software than you did on the hardware (the razor and the razor blades trick).

GREAT UNIT FOR GEOCACHING AND OSM MAPPING

This is a great next step to the 60Cx. It supports unlimited geocaches via GPX files and all it's data is stored as xml files which can easily be accessed via the mass-storage device. This makes things easy for Linux users.

The only failing is this unit doesn't play nice with OSM and address searches, where the 60Cx did.

GREAT GEOCACHING GIZMO

Pros: accuracy-paperless geocaching.
Cons: squeaky case when pushing on buttons.

A great gps for geocaching. The accuracy of a 60csx and the ability to go paperless like a oregon.

INCREDIBLE RECEPTION

Pros: incredible reception

The 62s has a fairly intuitive interface, like the other two Garmin products I own, but what impresses me the most is the reception. I was amazed when I turned the unit on this morning and within a minute it had locked onto five satellites...and I was in side my house, on the first floor of a two story house. My eTrex Vista would never have locked onto enough satellites to give me a position.
