VERY USER UNFRIENDLY
Pros: paperless caching, good antenna Cons: see above
This is my second review of this unit, & now that I have used it more if there was a 0 rating that's what it would get from me. I use it only for geocaching, Yes,it has good directional abilities & will take you to posted coordinates, but that is all the praise it gets from me, other than it is paperless. Far,far too many button pushes to navigate the paperless features & then back to map or compass. How long before this wears out? Can't delete individual caches like you can on the 60CSx. Caches can only be deleted in bulk when connected to the computer. Can't access any of the features when connected to the computer ( mass storage mode ) like you can on the 60CSx. Can't change coordinates for puzzle caches without doing a separate POI very poor. Frequently wont accept my input that I have found a cache & I have to repeat the process several times Extremely poor on line manual-you don't even get a manual booklet with the unit..Without help from more savvy technical friends I would not have even been able to use it. While caching, without touching any buttons, it will frequently go to MOB. When this piece of crap quits working I will get a 60CSx & go back to paper. COME ON GARMIN, we shouldn't have to take a course to be able to use this unit. Make a unit that has the features of a 60CSx & is paperless. I'm sure there are other features that I don't like, but I think you get the idea. These features will apply to the 62s & 62st also.

GETTING USED TO IT.
Pros: acturate, solid unit Cons: no maps
My GPS is used exclusively for Geocaching. When I started out I had a Garmin eTrex GPS and absolutely loved it, so it was hard to get one that would measure up to it. The only reason I wanted to upgrade was to the paperless option and better readings under tree cover. This one took a bit of getting used to. At first I wanted to drop kick it into the nearest puddle and go back to my eTrex. But persevered and now quite like it. The screen is a nice size and very clear. Very accurate under tree cover and the battery life is excellent. Good solid unit. Although, more cumber sum to operate, once I got the hang of the settings and how to maneuver thru the compass and cache info I was home free. This was achieved with precisely no help from the user guide, which is pretty much useless. My biggest gripe with these units are the fact there are no maps which, for the price is ridiculous! I have to spend another $100.00 to get a map of my area, where I could buy a navigation GPS for my car for $100 and get tons of maps already included. Irritating. Otherwise, this one will be around for the duration of my caching travels.

FINALLY GARMIN GOT IT RIGHT
I'm another 60CSx fan who despised my constantly locking up Dakota and thought the Oregons and Colorados were stunned when I used them. The 62 is the best of both worlds. Never had a GPSr that takes me so directly to the cache. Of course, paperless is great and I'm glad Garmin brought back some features of the good old 60CSx like show finds by calendar date. Touch screen on the Dakota was handy but also a pain as I was constantly locking and unlocking the screen as it did all sorts of stuff by itself while packing it in a pocket or something. Best GPSr I have ever owned and this is my 7th Garmin.

DON'T LIKE IT
Cons: clumsy to navigate the features.
I use this unit only for geocaching & the reason I bought it was that my 60CSx was malfunctioning & I needed another unit. The paperless geocaching feature is what attracted me to it. I wish that I had just bought another 60CSx & continued to use Palm Z22 for paperless This 62 is the most user unfriendly device that I have ever used & the downloadable manual is next to useless.

ACCURATE PAPERLESS GEOCACHE
Pros: reception, accurate, paperless, rugged, battery Cons: poor manual
User Profile: Geocache/Canoe/Hike/Car
Upgraded from a eTrax. The GPSMAP 62 is very good for geocaching. Paperless, nice screen, excellent reception. Battery with no backlight lasts 20 hours. Preloading 500 pocket quiries is easy. There are many menues and custom features but a poor manual. It took me half an hour to figure out how to save a waypoint while using the pan map feature (enter + menu + enter). Other than that and a scratch on the screen from canoeing, the GPSMAP 62 seems ideal. It is a huge improvement over our eTrax. It is rugged, accurate and paperless. It has become my favorite toy.

HIGH-QUALITY GPS WITH A FEW CONFUSING FEATURES
I was in the market for a navigational GPS to use for a research project involving glaciers in Alaska. Having just returned from over a week in the backcountry (bushwhacking through a wilderness area) using this GPS (combined with USGS topos) for navigation, I can recommend this product without much hesitation. The GPS signal was consistently strong, even when the unit was buried in the top of my backpack or beneath a spray skirt in a kayak. The unit allows you to very easily mark waypoints and then manage them. I was able to easily upload data (.gpx) from the device to my computer (and then to google earth and ArcGIS).
A few disappointments: 1) Garmin could have done a better job with the layout. It isn't always intuitive to navigate between the different features of the product, and it's unclear to me whether some features that have icons don't actually come with the baseline GPSMAP 62 (for instance, the user's manual seems to suggest that the base model doesn't have a compass or sight n' go, and yet these features seem to show up on the device [but don't seem to work]). Finally, you'd think that for a relatively high-end unit like this Garmin would include a pretty comprehensive user's manual. Instead, you get a "for dummies" set-up guide that while useful in getting started, is pretty useless for trouble shooting, etc.
