BEST GPS FOR LAPTOP

Pros: accurate and very reliable

Very good GPS for use with a laptop. It is accurate, 2m most off the time, and very reliable. I am using the previus model GPS 18 USB for 5 years in forest roads on the Greek mountains without any problem. I have been using it with GPS Utility, GPS trackmaker and Garmin nRoute.

EXCELLENT FOR FIRE DEPARTMENT GPS

Pros: easy install, small and accurate
Cons: none

We have Mobile Data Terminals in our fire apparatus (Fire Engines and Medics). We utilized the Garmin 18x to send our GPS coordinates to our mapping program ThinkGIS by WTH Technologies. It follows us on the map and is extremely accurate. We love this product and I would highly suggest it to anyone with a similiar application.

GARMIN GPS - 18X WORKS GREAT WITH NETBOOK

Pros: fast acquisition and accuracy - good magnetic base
Cons: a little pricey

I paired this receiver up with an ASUS netbook, GpsGate and Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010. Talk about fast satellite acquisition 500 miles away from its last fix and I was on the map in Regina in 2 seconds. Magnetic base very strong and car finish friendly.

PRETTY POOR

Pretty awful. All I wanted to see was the raw data coming off the device. Spanner does not support Vista (which unfortunately was my OS). Was unable to use any of the gps software with gpsd on Fedora11 or Unbuntu. Hotplug on Fedora did recognise it and kick off gpsd when I plugged it in, but gpsd did not provide any information.

Was only able to it working with Google Earth, but that was not what I wanted.

GARMIN FPS 18X USB + LINUX = GREAT

Pros: mag base, small, works out of the box in linux
Cons: no external aerial jack

Setting this thing up under Red hat Fedora 11 Linux consists of plugging it in. hotplug recognizes it, fires up the gpsd and voila, you have a running GPS server on your machine that your applications (and other computers) can use to get positional and location data. What really impressed me was running xgps and watching the numbers change as I held the GPS in my hand and moved it around and up and down, this thing is really accurate and sensitive. Works great for wireless LAN locating with Kismet.

GARMIN GPS 18 REVIEW

Pros: compact, acquires sat signals well
Cons: no instructions, needs additional software

Works perfectly with resident mapping software. Needed to download Garmin Spanner to get appropriate Windows drivers when using non-Garmin software.. No instructions came with GPS 18, but pretty easy to figure out once Spanner is running.
