Manufacturer Description |
The GPS 18 is a GPS sensor targeted to OEM clients for use in automotive, fleet vehicle, and electronics applications where a small, highly accurate GPS receiver is needed.
This 12-parallel-channel, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver is available in either asynchronous serial or USB 2.0 versions, and comes with an integrated magnetic base. The puck-like receiver is 2.4 inches in diameter and weighs just 3.5 ounces, making it an ideal solution in applications where space is at a premium.
The GPS 18 is offered in three different cable configurations: A-style USB, DB-9 pin serial with 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter (PC), or bare wire (LVC).
The PC and LVC versions both default to output data in the industry standard NMEA 0183 data format, but may also be user programmed to output data in the GARMIN proprietary format. The USB version produces data ONLY in the GARMIN proprietary format. This means that the OEM 18 USB can only function with the Garmin mapping software on a computer. A pre-bundled package is available which contains the OEM 18 USB and the Garmin City Select USA Software.
All three versions of the GPS 18 come complete with non-volatile memory for storage of configuration information, a real-time clock, and raw measurement output data for sophisticated customer applications. The LVC version additionally provides a pulse-per-second logic level output whose rising edge is aligned to the UTC second within 1 microsecond. The USB 2.0 full-speed version of the GPS18 is also compatible with USB 1.1 full-speed hosts.
NOTE: The end of the Garmin OEM18LVC now comes with a connector end that can attach to a CMOS (gps processor) for OEM applications. If required, the end can be removed to become a 'bare-wire' solution.
Garmin OEM18 LVC Part Number Update:
This item was formally part number 010-00321-06. When Garmin upgraded the unit to become RoHS compliant, the part number was changed to 010-00321-56.

Features & Tips |
Here is a listing we have put together of some of the common GPS 18 LVC features,
along with a few user tips that you may find of help for this particular item. | |
Very Important Note:
The OEM 18 GPS Series all require different input voltages (see list below):
• 18 USB: 4.4 - 5.5 Vdc
• 18 PC: 8 - 30* Vdc (Automotive supply from cigarette lighter jack)
• 18 LVC: 4.0 - 5.5 Vdc
* It should be noted that the OEM 18 PC unit has a cigarette lighter adapter end that converts the 12V DC (from the cigarette lighter power source) to the input voltage required by the GPS unit. If you remove the cigarette lighter end and then hard wire the GPS to the 12V power source, you WILL burn out the unit.
Specifications:
To review the Garmin OEM 18 Series units, take a look at the Garmin GPS 18 Specifications Page.
USB Drivers for Garmin Software:
To use the Garmin GPS 18 with Garmin MapSource Software, you require the Garmin USB driver. You can download it from the Garmin Updates and Downloads Page. You will also need the compatible mapping programs from Garmin. For use on your PC you will need mobile PC or enRoute with a copy of compatible garmin mapping such as City Navigator North America NT. Please note that the software needs to be unlock to the GPS unit before it will work.
USB Drivers for Non-Garmin Software:
To use the Garmin GPS 18 with Non Garmin Mapping Software (Third Party), you require the Garmin Spanner USB driver. You can download it from the Garmin Updates and Downloads Page.

My fourth purchase from gpscity. Previous 3 went great and I expect this one will as well. I do feel rather sheepish though. This last week I've been combing the net for a golf GPS. For some reason this evening the lights went on - gpscity. Thank goodness I remembered you folks. I'll never know what took so long though. Anyway, I got to you and I feel much better now. :) Don Donald L. ON, May 11/12 |
GPSCity.ca is now my exclusive GPS store. I've purchased 4 GPS units at GPS City so far. The website is informative, prices are competitive, and questions are answered promptly. Thanks for being so good at what you do GPS City Gary S. AB, May 8/12 |
I have done alot of onlne ordering and this site is by far the best I have been on. Very clear and accurate presentation. I also like the fact that the credit card will not be charged until the item is shipped, not so with other places. Excellent smithers! Danny K. AB, May 4/12 |
