MOVING UP

Last year I was bitten very hard by the Geocaching bug. With zero research I purchased an eTrex Venture HC GPS. Could not have purchased a better unit in my opinion. Not knowing a thing about them, I found this unit extremely easy to use. Did not even have to crack the user guide to figure out how to enter caches and found it very very accurate. Loved it. Now waiting delivery on my new eTrex Vista HCx and have passed on my Venture to my best friend, who hopefully will have as much fun with it as I did.

CRASHED AFTER 2 DAYS

Pros: small, lightweight
Cons: crashed after 2 days

bought this as a Christmas gift for my husband, primarily to use for geocaching. We already have a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx that we have been using for 3 years, but my husband wanted something smaller and less complicated, so based on the glowing reviews on this site & others I purchased this. The day after Christmas, while trying to use the Garmin webupdater, it completely crashed. I did a Google search and found out that this was a known problem for this model. I tried all the suggestions but was unable to revive it. Sent it back to GPSCity, & received the replacement yesterday. Keeping my fingers crossed!

GREAT PRICE!

This unit is on sale for half price at Canadian Tire... but their 'half price' is $199.99. Too funny.

GPS FOR GEOCACHING

Pros: does the job
Cons: sd card capability would be nice, but at the price

We bought this unit primarily to geocache with and it's been really great at taking right down on top of the caches. Display is bright, battery use is very acceptable and the control menu is pretty intuitive. I really like the light easy-in-the-hand size. All in all a very good value at the price.

GREAT GPS UNIT

After getting lost coming home in the dark numerous times while out Quading my wife bought this for me. so now I have no more excuses for coming home late. Found it really easy to use and the topo maps that you can get install easy and help immensely in quading the tails around Norther Alberta. Haveing the route and being able to tag the various area's with comments help with getting back to our favorite fishing holes, and with Garmin's Mapsource program we can see where we have been. Great Stuff

Good starter GPS UNIT, but would be good if it contained 'removable memory' card slot to add or take away memory information

GREAT FOR GEOCACHING

Pros: ease of use.

I bought this the other day and started using it for geocaching. I am new to the sport and this GPS was easy to understand and use. I've had great success with it so far and was able to download coordinance directly from geocaching.com with the USB cable with no problems at all. I haven't used it for making any routes for trips with my car and don't really intend to. I might try it out in the future.

HARD TO USE SOFTWARE

I gave this to my wife for Christmas for her long distance bicycle rides ( 200+ miles ). She has not been able to try it out yet becuase the soft ware was giving her problems. She emailed Garmin and they replied the next day, BUT the answers they gave her did not work so she contacted then again ( via email ). All they are doing is RESENDING there original answer, so after almost 2 weeks she is no closer to being able to use this product.

BOUGHT AS STARTER BUT STICKING WITH IT!

Pros: reliable and easy to use
Cons: takes a while to grab initial signal at atart up

When I was looking for a GPS unit to start my geocaching adventure I figured I would start out small and work up to one of those high end babies that have everything. What I didn't know was, I already had it! This unit does it all. Ok, so it doesn't have all the bells and whistles and limited memory, but how much do you need man? I mean one hand operation with ease, awesome backlighting even on the brightest days, very accurate under moderate cover and easy to learn and operate makes this a top choice for anyone. I got mine with the bundle (recommended because then it comes in a cool hunter green color and the topo graphics are great) and loaded a 100 mile area of my home to memory. Them I loaded about 300 cache coords in a 35 mile radius of my home. In addition I have entered nearly 50 or so waypoints and the memory still is not full and loads quick even with all that data on it. I haven't deleted anything because I wanted to push the memory to the max. i haven't been able to do that. I can't imagine you could need more than this so to me the little memory cards would be a waste. I have been getting about 20 hours of continued use with 100% brightness on at all times, that's cool with me and don't worry about those high end batteries, I use no names and still get great results. The features are easy to learn and work. For the first few days I was all thumbs but in a short period of time I was flying through the screens like a pro. It has NEVER let me down, not once! I like that in anything, don't you? Yes, I decided to stick with my little green Venture HC and spend that extra money on things that I need more like my new cool personal Geocoins!

THE GARMIN ETREX VENTURE HC, WORKS GREAT!

Pros: easy to use, lots of features, great value

For the money a great unit. Quick acquisition, course point function useful for direct tracking ( HSI style ) Computer utility useful for trip planning, and post trip review. Screen requires backlight on much of the time, but even so, batteries last quite a while. (I also have the Etrex Legend, but found the font too small for glareshield mount. The Venture HC is much easier to see, for not much more money )

MY FIRST

Pros: small, eay to use and extremely cute!
Cons: storage

It didn't take me long to figure out how to use this GPS. As a beginner I only read the instructions as a last resort.

I simply believe a little more storage or ability to use an SD card would make this better :)

GREAT LITTLE GPS

Pros: small, easy to use and accurate
Cons: no ability to put in memory cards

I am very happy with my E-trex Venture HC GPS. I use it mainly for Geocaching and find it is accurate, easy to use and being very light it is no problem carrying it. It is quite easy to read the screen even in bright light.

GREAT GEOCACHING UNIT FOR THE MONIES

Cons: instructions could be better

I use it for Geocaching and it works great have no trouble finding the caches. Works well even under cover. Easy to use. The instructions are not very elaborate and still have not figured out what the Trip and Waypoint Mgr is all about. I would recommend this unit as you get you bang for your money.

GREAT GPS FOR 1ST TIMERS!

Pros: easy to use & figure out.

Love it, and have already recommended to a family member. Was easily figured out & used right away -- though still have some features to discover as we go along. Got a case and cigarette adapter & would highly recommend the colour-display love the customizing options and find it easy to use. Fairly close accuracy (as described), and glad there are basic base maps. May need better maps, but for now "We're good!" Very happy with purchase & service @ GPS City.

SUITS THE PURPOSE

Pros: good batt life & compact to cary.
Cons: not real friendly to use, black screen hard to read

This item does what I wanted it to do & that is "Go Too" a geo site, which my early "magellen" won't do unless you've been there before, can't input with it. Though the unit is not the simplest to use/ friendly, it does the job I need it to do. I might say the black screen is hard to see in the sunlite, But!

GREAT VALUE PRICED COLOUR GPS

Pros: price/performance
Cons: no sd slot, 24mb is just a bit too small for me.

I wanted a GPS unit for offroading, hiking, biking and camping. This unit does everything I need it to do and at a great price. The screen is great and it grabs signals like glue.

GOOD GPSR

Pros: cheapest fully functional unit for geocaching
Cons: 500 waypoints, no ability to add more map memory

Bought for a girlfriend. So when out together it supplements using my GPSMAP76c with maps. Not quite all the bells and whistles. but the receiver is just as accurate. Usable as a primary unit? Absolutely!

I ordered four Venture HC's for my students to do geocaching. They arrived within a few days. Unfortunately, one of the units wasn't functioning properly. I contacted customer service and tried some of their suggestions, but we couldn't get it working properly. They suggested I contact Garmin directly, which I did, and we still couldn't get it working properly. I contacted GPSCity again and returned the unit. They sent a replacement unit out right away. All units are now working great and the students love them. Customer service has been great at GPSCity.

ETREX VENTURE HC

I know this is going to sound bad but it's actually good. I only had the Venture HC for one day before returning it. It was everything I hoped it would be -- accurate, gets a location lock quickly, comfortable to hold and use, good battery life, nice screen ... with one exception. I discovered immediately that the internal memory was not enough -- not even close! - for the quantity of topographical maps I wanted to load. So I phoned GPSCity, ordered the eTrex Legend HCx that supports a micro-SD card, got an RMA for the Venture and sent it back for a full refund.

I have had the Legend HCx for a couple of months and I'm extremely pleased with it. If I didn't need the space for maps, the Venture would have received a 4 or 5. GPSCity Customer Service gets a 5+.

EXCELLENT UNIT

I purchased the venture HC about 2 weeks ago and thus far ive encountered no problems. My main purpose is geocaching, and for this, the unit is top notch. Sometimes, even right on the money, regardless of forest canopy or overcast. The mapsoure software is understandably simplified and I am pondering an upgrade to canadian topo maps. Nevertheless, when all is said and done, this gps rocks!
