WORKED FOR A YEAR OR SO....

Pros: amazing detail
Cons: joystick gives out

Loved it until the joystick decided to go bonkers. Sometimes it works and other times it will not go where I want, or goes up but not sideways. No other way around not having to use the joystick. oh well.

A GREAT BUDGET MODEL

Pros: love the left hand mini "joy stick"
Cons: the base map is all but useless!

Hey!I suspect every contemporary hand held GPS works as a GPS locater as well as all others, all makes included. You just have to decide how many "Bells &Whistles" you want and how many escalating dollars you are willing to spend to get them! I bought my first GPS hand held in 1997. The Garmin Etrex Legend is my second. My first is now a dinosaur. The Legend is ready to go in 15 seconds - not only will "work" in heavy tree cover - I can put it in my pocket of a heavy winter coat and walk or cycle around! It will even be "Ready To Navigate" in my house! There are many(34?)data field options that one can use to customize the 4 pages depending on your current application. Nuff said - anything more and Garmin is going to have to pay me :>). I'm new to Geocaching and I am having a good time with finds.

GARMIN ETREX LEGEND

Great little GPS. Used it on a recent quad trip and it navigated me directly to my intended destination. Going to download some topo maps soon which will enhance its ability.

This is the perfect GPS for me. I use it on my ATV and it has everything I need to track and map my trails. I just ordered the 12v lighter adapter which I hope will make it that much more convenient.

Very flexible item, excellent basemap but very very slow to download additional map data via rs 232 cable - should be usb. Also 8mb of memory is far too little to add maps of other areas or greater detail.

I received my first GPS, a Garmin e-Trex Legend, on boxing day 2006. Use it every day, at work and away. The handiest thing ever. I use it to mark my irrigation install jobs & valve boxes at work for later locates. Off time, hiking trips, geocaching and scooting around on mountain roads (mounted on my handle bars of my Honda Ruckus scooter) even used it to clock my speed while tubing down the ski mountain with my wife and kids (47kmh top speed) good thing it's waterproof. Too much fun, I never leave home without it, glad I have it!

Great little GPS. We bought it primarily for Geocaching and it is perfect for that sport! Good maps, direction, waypoint entry, etc. I wish the road map was more detailed, but you have to buy the software for that (pricey). Backlight is useful. Easy enough for my young son to operate. Batteries last forever!

Have owned a Legend for about a year now. Use it for Geocaching and have found no issues or problems with it at all. Works like a charm with great accuracy and battery life. 8mb of memory could be bigger, but it still holds adquate map areas using Mapsource Topo. We love it and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a handheld GPSr!!
