NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE NEAR HANOI

This experience was probably the closest I've come to death since the safari trip in Africa where we were surrounded by a herd of wild elephants at dusk. My wife and I were returning to Hanoi, Vietnam at nice after a failed attempt to find a place to stay near the Perfume Pagoda.

We were returning from an excursion of a few days in the mountains, west of Hanoi on a self organized bicycle tour. We knew it was dangerous to cycle in Hanoi during the day. A tour book we had with us warned that cycling in the city at night was akin to suicide. But, after a set back where we tried unsuccessfully to rent a bus to take us into town (Driver was unscrupulous), we were committed to make the trip. Besides, we through the tour book warning was an exaggeration.

As we approached Hanoi, we found ourselves on progressively busier roads, clouded with dust and fumes from the tens of thousands scooters driven by young adults that have traded in their bicycles for mechanized transport, which is a status symbol there. Rules of the road don't seem to exist as everyone weaves back and forth attempting to gain a slight advantage. The only rule is the bigger you are, the more right of way you have, literally. In the prior days we saw two scooters wedged under trucks, apparently the scooter drivers were not fast enough to get out of the way. I almost got run over by a few cars in attempting to navigate round abouts. I guess the drivers saw I was a foreigner and thought running me over might get them into trouble. Drivers drive on the wrong side of the road and a lot of the scooters don't put on their head lights to save a few pennies on gas. Pure bedlam !

Thankfully I had my Garmin 705 mounted on my handlebar, loaded with the map of Vietnam and detailed street maps of Hanoi. Without this we would never had found our hotel. Even with this, we had to hop our bikes over some barriers and ride in little alley ways, where the locals gawked at us with a "what the hell are these foreigners doing here" look on their faces.

We were relieved to finally arrive at the hotel and be greeted by Mr. Tung, who made a previously reserved room available to us. The folks that had reserved it were probably not going to show up anyway.

May 26th, 2009 I received my Garmin Edge 705 Bike Computer. I thought, well that's a heck of a lot of money for something to tell me mileage, but it's been so much more than that. Originally all I had was the heart rate monitor and I also bought the latest US and Canada microSD card for more accurate road maps. The heart rate monitor, while not as responsive as a power meter for showing your effort, is great for training and balancing your capacity when out for a long ride.

I use a site called www.bikeroutetoaster.com to pre-load a new bike route around Ottawa. I also use extensively the Garmin Connect site to keep track of all my biking and other activities.

I've used the 705 through the summer, fall, winter and spring. My coldest day was around -27˚C. I really use the 705 like a biking companion. I'd be lost with out it, ha.

Since May 26th, 2010 was coming around I tweeted my friends and asked for guesses as to how far I'd biked. There was no lying because I always use the 705 to track mileage (well except for Hawaii when I got there and was slightly miffed to realize that I had not packed it). I had guessed from around 1100Km to 1200Km. My actual mileage was 4990Km with around 3500Km of that being commuting to and from work and shopping. Around 1500Km was done in the winter through snow and sleet. The Heart Rate monitor I could always look at and say "I'd better take it a bit easier".

It's a very expensive addition to your biking habit but I've really enjoyed mine. The battery life is incredible and the Garmin Connect site keeps getting updated with new features (Where's the Web 2.0 API though!!!!! - I'm a developer who wants to get to his data). I'm sure with a power meter it would even be a better training tool however I'm not sure I want to step up to that level.

Overall, I'd for sure recommend it if you are an avid cyclist, love tracking stats, and need to work on intervals and zone training.

I'm including some photos of my summer bike and the winter salt mess bike.
