2ND GPS UNIT
Pros: very sensative antenna Cons: does not fit the etrex ram craddle.
bought it to replace an Etrex Legend C because the map could not be updated. I hope this does not happen to the Dakota 20. Would like the trip computer reset to be more convenient. Don't think I should have to go to the setup section to effect a reset.
The first unit I was sent had a defective start switch. I had to send it back at my cost of $25.00 (Traceable shipment). I do not believe I should be penalized because you sent me a defective unit.
Otherwise, the unit meets my expectations.

EXCELLENT CITY NAVIGATOR IN EUROPE
Pros: quick to find satellite. provides a lot of info. Cons: needs a better screen zoom for easier reading.
Bought the Garmin Dakota 20 with the Garmin microSD City Navigator Europe NT 2011 Card with Adapter. I used it for walking in Paris and London. It could tell me where the closest Subway Stations are and tourist attractions, restaurants and more. I never needed a paper map. It even worked on the train from Paris to Epernay telling me the speed we were travelling at. It has many great features.

GREAT OUTDOOR UNIT
Pros: compact size, available accessories
Was everything we expected and More!! A nice addition to my biking world as well. It's great to have the extra navigational ability when I stray too far from home.

DAKOTA 20 - A LOT OF GPS FOR THE MONEY
Pros: great value, compact size, touchscreen Cons: poor waas reception
I must say I was skeptical about Garmin's touchscreen GPS's. But I came away thoroughly impressed. I mainly use the unit for canoeing, hiking, and driving.
I really like the new Profiles feature. This allows me to instantly toggle between reverse colors for marine/canoeing, regular mode for hiking, and even one that shows maps like Garmin's car nav units. You can also choose which icons to display, etc.
For Topo maps, I use the Ibycus Topo Canada. It's open source (free) and are very detailed. Only downside, is you cannot search or route with them.
The compass and altimeter are a neat feature. A first for any GPS I have owned. Both worked very well and were easy to calibrate
Overall, the screen is readable in most conditions especially sunlight. But it can be difficult to read in shade. Adjustment of the backlighting brightness helps here.
The City Navigator map works just like a Garmin's Nuvi except you get beeps instead of spoken text. The screen is a bit small, but if you purchase an appropriate RAM windshield mount it works very well. Tip: BUY the 12V lighter adapter #010-10851-11 The screen is far brighter when the unit is powered with 12V. It also shuts off automatically when the ignition is turned off.
Con's?
The unit does not ship with the latest software installed. This is important as the later versions include touchscreen calibration. My screen was not working well until I installed the update and did the calibration.
WAAS reception is poor to useless. Many times it won't lock at all. This despite the newest beta software. No matter, even with WAAS off I still get 3m (9ft) accuracy or better. Doubling back on single track hiking routes yielded fairly repeatable track logs... a good indication that the accuracy is consistent.
I wish the altimeter would store historical barometric data as opposed to just altitude.
