GOOD FOR THE PRICE, BUT GLITCHY SOFTWARE
Pros: very durable and uses normal batteries Cons: updates are very glitchy
Bought two units for our company. Out of the box, units come with base world imagery, which is useful for scrolling in map view to where you want to go, but if you update the software, the background imagery gets nuked! You need the update in order to use the Custom Maps feature, but it comes at a fair price. The Custom Maps feature requires someone who is fairly tech savvy as you need to geo-reference and export images properly from Google Earth and then insert them directly into a new folder on the unit's memory. Support let me know that there is another newer update, but it requires an update manager to get it. Have not tried yet. The Waypoint Upload is simple using GPS Trackmaker, but the unit does not indicate when the memory is full. The unit is weather resistant, but neither of the back covers close properly, so it is not water-resistant. Overall, good for the price and good for geocachers and recreational users. Also good for industrial and navigational use, but only if you are tech savvy enough to get the most out of it.

UPDATE: COULD GIVE YOU MORE
Pros: easy to open, solid Cons: minor repairs cost same thing as major ones.
My first review stands ... The Garmin support is not good when it is a minor issue. I found out it costs 120$ to get a new refurbished unit. They do not repair them and are sent to Singapore for factory rebuild. If the problem is a major one then I suppose 120$ is worth the money, for a minor thing it is not. I pulled apart the unit 4 times before deciding to repair the USB port myself. Easy fix in my case and some 20 minutes later works well. Since the repair bill was too high I bough another unit for 200$ only for car use, and I must say the new unit 855 is much better for car travel. I still use my 300 for outdoor and as a 2nd unit. Having pulled the thing apart I can tell you that it is well built. Too bad they did not want to make it smaller as this could have been so much better. There are tons of extra unused space in the unit ... and I would have liked a much smaller unit with a separate bulletproof case. Well you cant have every thing.
I also had a second look at the screen ... and in direct sunlight you need to turn the back-light off, and you see the scree just fine. I do not understand the comments bellow and the only time I had a hard time seeing the screen is when the USB failed while driving. The good part is that even on batteries the screen would come on when you need to turn, that is nice.
And now that I think of it, when you are downtown in-between buildings the position resolution is 50-30m at best. Had that in LA 1.5 years ago and downtown Montreal a few times. This model would be a good choice if you need to use an external antenna. Never got there and probably never will with my use.
Have fun.

EXCELLENT FOR WHAT IT CAN GIVE YOU.
Pros: good in the sun, nice battery life Cons: screen stays on, usb port fragile.
Bought a Colorado 300 unit in may 2008. We use it for automotive routing, trail and bike trips. Initially it did an ok job with the satellite sync way too slow. The newest firmware did some nice improvements. Using this unit outside proves to be very good. The 2450mAh batteries last about 10-12 hours if you do not use the backlight too much. The screen in full sun is awesome as it does not require any backlight. In the car you need an USB adapter and that can be had for 10$ if you wait for a special. But as any other usb adapter it is fragile.
Had some initial issues with the unit shutting down when using a memory card. Seemed to be a firmware issue as the problem disappeared on it’s own. The unit was dropped quite a number of times and still works fine. Maybe that fixed some issues )
Now, and after 2 years of moderate use the usb connector broke and it needs to be sent in for repairs. (will see how that goes) To avoid any duty fees, Garmin indicated to get support from: Raytech Electronicque www.raytech.qc.ca
Overall I am very satisfied with the unit. There are better units out there, but this one does the job just fine. I would have liked to have the 400c for the added internal memory but price was an issue 2 years ago.

BEST USE INDOORS ONLY
Pros: looks cool and that's it! Cons: thumbwheel falls off, dark screen, battery burner
Some of the boys I work with (military ones) bought some of these and they aren't too pleased with this unit. It has a BIG screen indeed, but that feature alone chews batteries in no time. Plus, you just can't see anything from it in broad day light. The screen is dark compared to some other units we've owned and tested in the field.
And just so you all know, if you ever clip the thumb wheel out of its socket and you get any grit, sand, water or anything else in there, your GPS is toast!! We've seen it twice already. The poorly design allows you to pop the thumb wheel way too easy (if you own one, try it and you'll see), allowing anything contaminants to enter the GPS and turning it into a very cool expensive door stopper or a rear view mirror bling-bling.
If you want the best of the best from Garmin, for outdoor use, in any terrain and weather, with the best features and military worthy, go with the GPSMAP 60Cx or 60CSx.
You won't be disappointed!
