GOOD GPS! BAD GPS!

Here’s a quick story of a task that took entirely too long and a GPS unit that saved the day and caused a moment of mayhem all at the same time. After spending an entire day loading a 24’ box truck with a friend’s furniture, etc,. Myself and a another friend set off in the truck just before dark to drive across town to the new home for unloading. This should have been a 30min trip.. but 5min into the drive alarms went off in the truck, indicating air brake failure. After calling the truck rental company and waiting 5 hours on the side of the road, an ill-equipped tow-truck finally arrived. Not having the proper gear to tow the big truck, he was not to exceed 30mph and was prohibited from getting on the freeway.. we would have to navigate side-streets at a crawl the entire way. GPS to the rescue. We made a convoy, myself in a loaded pickup with the GPS in front, the tow-truck pulling the 24’ box truck in the middle and my friend in his truck taking up the rear. Program the GPS to avoid freeways and the course was set. An hour into the trip, just past midnight we made a right hand turn as directed and this slow-moving rather large and loud convoy drove about a quarter mile when ahead I saw something not right. There was a fence-line and a small gate directly ahead.. and no sign of a turn.. this was a dead-end road.. but no ordinary dead-end road. No signs posted.. but as my vehicle approached the fence, 5 armed Military Guards appeared from behind the shack with automatic weapons. You can imagine the conversation.. as the other vehicles pulled up behind me.. I showed them the GPS still steadily pointing straight ahead. When everyone calmed down a bit, they explained that this was a CLOSED military base.. and obviously we would have to turn around. They explained that we looked like a heavy convoy coming down the road that they were not expecting and could therefore be a threat.. thus the response.. in the middle of the night. A couple re-routs and another hour later we finally arrived at our destination.. 13 miles from where we started, 9 hours and 5 machine guns later. Go GPS.. I should have expected it.. since it still can’t successfully direct me to work on a route I have driven every day for 6 years. PR Orange County, California
