GEOCACHING ON CAPE BRETON ISLAND

WoW What a great place to go caching!
With over 1000 geocaches on the island, you would have a great time wondering about and seeing the great sights as well.
Since we began geocaching a little over 2 years ago we found that Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia has some of the best locations for geocaches in the maritime provinces. There is plenty to see and definately plenty of caches to find. If you find yourself attracted to hiking some rugged coastline or 4 wheeling down some old back road or abandoned rail way we have it.
Our most memorable geocaching adventure was a recent one. Shortly after Christmas last year a new cache was published on the island. It went undiscovered for a few days, so we decided to go for it. The cache hider has been know to place caches in difficult spots so we did not know what to expect. Off we went to Piper's Cave, a short drive on a crisp winter day, about 28 kilometers from Sydney to Mt Auburn. After parking as close to the cache location, we geared up ready to find the hidden location. The snow was not to deep so the need for extra equipment was not necessary. The GPSr had us reading only 5 hundred meters to the spot. A good walk in the woods, down a small but steep creek bank to the log that pointed the way to the hidden hole. This was the challenge, getting across the stream which was about 4 meters wide and 1 meter deep. Only one way across, so I led the way shimmying across the sturdy log. I was followed by Down Home Girl and the MineRP. None of us got wet but not sure on what lay ahead and how far into the hole we had to go. This was easier than expected, the cavern was nice and dry and fun to explore and really not too deep inside.
The geocache was hidden close to the entrance and quite easy to find. The three of us claimed a First To Find on this hide, but that was not the highlight of the venture.
Finding this cache in the winter with the conditions as good as we had helped, but we were really pleased the we could find a cache placed by "Pushkin" whom is notorious for placeing caches in difficult spots. We were equally happy that the whole trip took about and hour from the departure of our parking place.
This cache is in an area on Cape Breton Island that is not heavily populated. There are similar type of caches here. We also have quite friendly people here and always like to meet new people.
So, if you are a geocacher and like new spots to find caches then take a trip to Cape Breton where we say 'Ciad Mille Failte'
