The newest SPOT GPS messenger to hit stores in early March.

 Globalstar, makers of the very popular GPS messenger SPOT, has recently confirmed the arrival of their sequel product, the SPOT 2.
The release of this new, higher sensitivity GPS receiver/transmitter combo has been buzzed about frequently for the past 6 months. Promising increased accuracy and acquisition, the SPOT 2 will also be more robust and compact, great for outdoor applications.
After a brief recall due to a manufacturing malfunction, the arrival of this highly anticipated device is near. ETA is now slated for early March 2010.

One cool partnership from the CES 2010 is the one between SPOT and Delorme. They combined their devices to bring us a GPS that has communications with friends back home. You can use the emergency services of the SPOT or just use it to send a text message to your loved ones letting them know you are OK.

 DeLorme, a long standing GPS Mapping company, has kept their strategy simple. Do what you know, and do it well.
DeLorme has been supplying recreational handheld GPS units for many years, primarily to the USA, with some minor sales into Canada. This year they have decided to branch off into relatively new territory, garnering a deal with Globalstar subsidiary SPOT.

Globalstar to expand their distribution to South America.

 Globalstar Inc., makers of the SPOT satellite messenger, have recently signed an agreement with TESACOM, allowing them to expand their distribution to Argentina, Chile, and Paraguay.
The SPOT messenger uses a combination of satellite messaging and GPS location based technology to provide peace of mind for consumers who spend time outdoors, or have loved ones who are of the adventurous type. The handheld device determines the coordinates of the user, then transmits that location and status using the Globalstar satellite network. In emergency situations, SPOT can send the current GPS coordinates to the local search and rescue call center.

LooKATOR Augmented Wifi Reality.

LooKATOR is a cool new wifi locator tool for the Google Android cell phone. By using the GPS position and wifi radio, it overlays an image indicating the wifi signal strength. So as you move the phone, the icons will stay on top of the hotspot location. WOW. Check out the video for a cool example.

 Every year many unnecessary accidents happen, resulting in casualties, in the North American back country. Usually the deaths occur because emergency services are not able to respond in time because the position of the hiker in trouble is not known and or they are unaware of the emergency. Hundreds of people end up dying because of injury or exposure before help arrives.
