Industry Canada released a statement in June 2009 saying that by 2014 products with a wattage output of higher than 2 watts will be permitted in Canada. A long time coming, this will allow users to transmit radio frequencies over longer distances.

The Garmin RINO series was always available to Canadians, but was limited to a 2 watt version. With the ban being lifted, the 5 watt version that was reserved for US use only will be sold and used legally in Canada.

The Kenwood In Dash navigation system is the best on the market.  It is in a league of its own when compared to the Ford Sync and other systems. 

We got the chance to play with new Garmin Approach G3 Golf GPS.  It was impressive and very similar to the Garmin Approach G5.  The G3 golf GPS uses the Garmin Dakota series as its base with the enhanced golf database preloaded.  The Garmin G5 uses the Oregon series as its base.  The unit comes preloaded with courses in the USA and you can add Canada now!

A genius idea from Garmin, Voice Studio, allows users to add their own voice to their GPS commands. Those who have a compatible model, will now be able to record their own nav instructions, in as little as 20 minutes.

Being a first generation product we can expect to see improvements and advancements in the coming months/years. One such change will probably include adding text to speech. At press time Voice Studio will only give the directions in distance, street names will not be announced. Restrictions on units is also a factor, as the older Nuvi 3xx and 6xx series are NOT compatible.

Garmin's Oregon series is well liked for many reasons, some of which are the 3" touchscreen, paperless geocaching and long battery life. The newest additions to this line are the Oregon 450 and Oregon 450T, replacements for the Oregon 300 and 400T respectively. The "T" indicates preloaded topographic coverage of the continental US.

While the casing and multitude of functions have remained the same, one key change has been the 3-axis compass. Along with a clearer, sunlight-readable screen and a high speed USB connection for quicker map transfers.
