Geocaching Challenges brings a new twist to the traditional style of geocaching that involves finding physical caches. Instead of focusing on finding a cache, geocachers are challenged to complete a task by a fellow member. While the Challenges are still in the beginning stage, here are some things to note:
Although only Geocaching.com's Premium Members can issue a Challenge, anyone can accept or complete Challenges. Right now, Premium members can only issue one Challenge per day. Once the Challenge is published, the creator has 24 hours or until someone accepts the Challenge to edit any details.
Challenges can be broke down into three types: Photo, Discover, and Action. The Photo Challenge asks participants to take a picture doing something specific in an exact location. For example, a Challenge could be issued to take a picture eating a pretzel in Times Square.
The Discover Challenge, which is still being developed and is not currently available on the website, dares geocachers to discover something new and surprising. To complete these Challenges, participants must answer a question about their discovery.
The last type, Action Challenges, require performing a task in a predetermined location, like hiking the Appalachian Trail. These can no longer be created on the website. While people are welcome to participate in ones already listed, the Challenges are slowly being replaced with the other two types.
Geocaching Challenges run on the honor system. Geocaching.com does not ask for proof that a Challenge has been completed. Instead, the website is putting faith in its members that if people say they completed the challenge, they are telling the truth. |
