Recently, DeLorme announced the new inReach, a two-way satellite communicator expected to be released later this year. The inReach allows users to stay connected to friends and family when outside of cell phone range by sending and receiving text messages worldwide. Additionally, the satellite communicator links users via Facebook and Twitter.
The inReach can be used alone, with DeLorme's Earthmate PN-60w or with smartphones running the Android OS. When used alone, the device sends three different prerecorded messages along with tracking location updates. When used with the PN-60W or an Android device, the inReach allows users to type up to 160 characters in either an email or a SMS text.
DeLorme's newest product compares to the SPOT Connect Beacon which was introduced earlier this year. Like the inReach, the SPOT Connect links a smartphone to communication satellites, turning the phone into a satellite communicator which can be used anywhere in the world.
According to DeLorme, the inReach will require a subscription for use of the tracking, messaging and SOS features. Currently, three messaging plans are available, starting at $9.95 per month. |
